Second turn as Queen Elizabeth II receives rave reviews for the Dame
Chuffing Helen Mirren, is there any point when she isn’t playing the Queen? Ok, ok so admittedly she’s only played Queen Lizzie, like, twice. That’s still twice more than anyone at Contactmusic has though.
This time Mirren has been playing Queen Elizabeth II in the play The Audience. You’ll all of course remember that her previous outing as the royal came in The Queen, which saw her take the Oscar for best actress in the 2006 awards. So she’s got pedigree in this role, and so it’s perhaps no surprise that she’s received a stonking review of her appearance on the West End in London by the Daily Telegraph.
"What’s remarkable is that Mirren is unobtrusively changed on stage into different costumes and wigs to suggest different periods of her reign and is almost eerily persuasive whatever age she is playing” writes the Telegraph’s theatre critics Charles Spencer of her performance, while he also went on to praise the play as a whole, writing as well "Stephen Daldry directs a pitch-perfect production, with a truly palatial design by Bob Crowley. And yes, there are real Corgis on stage, too."
Helen Mirren leaves the Gielgud Theatre after the first night of The Audience
The review came from the opening night of the play last night (March 5, 2013) with the BBC pointing out that a star-studded audience including Sir David Frost, politician David Miliband, film director Tom Hooper and actresses Sheila Hancock and Gemma Arterton were in attendance.
