Primavera Sound Festival - 2013 Preview

It's May and festival season is upon us, which means it will soon be time for Primavera Sound 2013, arguably the pinnacle of Europe's increasingly popular schedule. Set in beautiful Barcelona and mainly based on the Parc Del Forum site at the heart of the Diagonal Mar area of the Sant Marti district, this year's event will be the thirteenth edition of a festival that first opened its doors in the summer of 2001.

Primavera Sound Festival 2013 - Preview

As has been the norm in recent years, Primavera week kicks off with a series of fringe events starting on Monday 20th May. Sonic Boom's Spectrum headline the Sala Apolo venue, with the likes of Bo Ningen, Godflesh, Veronica Falls and Parquet Courts all playing there over the two nights. The main festival itself kicks off at the Parc Del Forum on Wednesday 22nd May, with The Vaccines and Delorean heading a bill that also includes hotly tipped US trio Guards and skatepunk duo The Bots.

The main event itself gathers momentum the next evening for the following three days, where over 200 artists will perform across eight different stages until the early hours of Sunday morning. However, as in previous years, that isn't where the fun ends, as there'll be a series of free shows on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May in the Parc De La Ciutadella featuring the likes of Merchandise, The Babies and Mac De Marco, while Sunday evening's closing ceremony at the Sala Apolo will see performances from Deerhunter, Come and The Orchids among many others.

Albums of Note... Coldplay’s Live 2012 album shows a band far more at ease with themselves than their previous live release, from 2003. The Live 2012 package includes both blu-ray and CD. The footage is punctuated by behind-the-scenes interludes and these excerpts showcase each band member’s enthusiasm for their live shows as well as revealing how the material from Mylo Xyloto evolved over time and culminated with them band playing to a vast stadium audiences across the globe. “Live 2012 includes some nice musical moments... the low-key piano intro to 'Yellow', a guest appearance from Rihanna during 'Princess Of China', and the stripped back intimacy of 'Us Against The World'. All of the other elements of big choruses and sing-along's spanning the entire Coldplay back catalogue are present and correct… and Chris Martin's voice seems to have found a renewed strength to cope with the massive venues the band now fills.”

One Direction Cover Kings Of Leon At ITunes Festival

One Direction almost caused a riot at the iTunes Festival at London’s Roundhouse on Thursday evening (September 20, 2012) just by, err, being there. The Press Association reports how fans “squealed and cried” as the boy-band took time out from their set to answer ‘Twitter questions’. Some of their answers were inaudible due to the high pitched din that enveloped the historic venue.

The question-and-answer session was an intriguing affair; for example, we found out that Zayn things Harry is sexy, and that Liam thinks Niall is cute. Oh wait, and Louis thinks Zayn is kind! Anyway, after that, the audience were treated to a blistering set from the group, who performed some of their biggest hits – You Don’t Know You’re Beautful, One Thing and Moments – as well as some of the tracks they performed while on The X Factor. Their cover of Kings Of Leon’s ‘Use Somebody’ went down a storm, as did The Zutons’ ‘Valerie’ and The Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I Gotta Feeling’. It’s safe to say One Direction have been one of Simon Cowell’s biggest success stories, topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and selling out huge venues with ease. Addressing the band’s storming success across the pond, Louis (who said Zayn was nice, remember!), told fans, “We have spent time outside of the UK and it is incredible to be back in London.”

The iTunes Festival continues throughout the month with Muse, Alicia Keys and Lana Del Rey set to perform, though Contactmusic.com recommends checking out Willie Mason (24th) and Hot Chip (29th).

Hot Chip, In Our Heads Album Review

"Hipster house" may have only really reared its head as a popular music journalistic phrase in 2012, but you only need to look at Hot Chip, the first label they signed to in DFA and the band that some of them teamed up with under the New Build moniker - LCD Soundsystem - to know that the term could just as well as have been applied back in the mid-noughties. Indeed, a few years ago the Chicago house sound had never felt more rejuvenated, a smattering of bands on both sides of the Atlantic taking its spidery-sounding four-to-the-floor beats and marrying them with the disaffected tones of 21st century apathy and tunes of a more pop-based hue.
