Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of Review

Very Good

Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of is in cinemas nationwide for one night only on 26th February, followed by a special performance by the band broadcast live by satellite. For info: www.backstreetboys.com/international

Lively and personal but never quite breaking the surface, this documentary about the boy band phenomenon traces both their 20-year anniversary project as well as their journey to the top and back. It's packed with terrific material that fans will love, and it explores some darker sides of the bandmates' lives, but it skims over any difficult aspects of their experience together. Still, they are energetic and ready for the challenge of taking the world by storm all over again.

To prepare for their 20th anniversary tour in 2013, Backstreet Boys A.J. McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson and Nick Carter travel to London to record a new album outside the limelight. Back in America, they also revisit their hometowns in Florida and Kentucky, meeting the teachers who inspired them, family members and old friends. But preparing to tour is a much more challenging prospect, as they try to get fit enough to do the old dance routines. And Brian is having a mental struggle that's affecting both his voice and his physicality. This brings up old tensions between them, even as they know that they can never perform without all five of them on stage.

The Backstreet Boys' time in the spotlight was a limited one at best, with so many elements contributing to their sudden fame and subsequent chart plunder. They unveiled a fresh new sound last year and now mark their return with a new documentary entitled 'Show 'Em What You're Made Of'.

Backstreet Boys ponder their career in a new documentary

The American boyband had their biggest career peak in 1999, but it wasn't long before they became another forgotten about boyband. They seemed to become an overnight hit in the UK and Europe, and soon they stormed their own nation. However, the success was blighted by lawsuits against their manager Lou Pearlman, who allegedly stole a large proportion of the band's earnings, not to mention problems with Jive Records, Nick Carter's desire to pursue a solo career, Kevin Richardson's departure and A.J. McLean's drug abuse confession.

In the late 90's and early 00's, The Backstreet Boys were the most powerful boy band in the world. After discovering that they had not been particularly popular in the US, the band travelled overseas and became a phenomenon in Europe. But the European scene was not enough for the American band, and they had to crack the US. With a career spanning years of highs and lows, The Backstreet Boys made their way from nothing, to Europe, to worldwide sensation. But what does that sort of strain does that success put on otherwise ordinary people? And just how does anybody overcome it?

'Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of' is an upcoming documentary about the much loved boy band from documentary director Stephen Kijak. The film was set in motion when the band decided to meet in London in 2012 to work on a new album, yet they decided that they wanted to make a movie instead, telling the story of their band and its success. The band contributed all the music to the film, with a release date set for 30th January, 2015 in the US, and a worldwide release date of 26th February, 2015.

The Backstreet Boys - one of the biggest selling boy-bands in music history - have been inducted into the glittering Hollywood Walk of Fame, receiving their star on Monday afternoon (April 22, 2013). The prestigious honor comes in the same week that the group, made up of Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, A.J McLean, celebrate their 20th year together as a band.

"It's amazing," Richardson told EW before the band previewed material from their new record for fans in Hollywood on Saturday, "To be able to do this for so long, it's quite an accomplishment." Littrell, 38, says the band's journey from Orlando-start-up to Walk of Famers doesn't seem as long as it should, "Sometimes life gets too fast, especially with Millennium and Black and Blue and stuff that happened many years ago. It just moves too fast," he said.
