Paddington Review

Excellent

It's difficult not to go into a movie like this with a sense of dread, as the beloved children's book becomes a live-action movie with a digitally animated, eerily realistic-looking bear. Thankfully, the task of filmmaking was given to the inventive Paul King (of Mighty Boosh fame), who made the charmingly surreal 2009 comedy Bunny and the Bull and brings a refreshingly unexpected comical sensibility to liven up this film's family-friendly formula.

It starts in darkest Peru, where a young bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) has been raised by his aunt and uncle (Imelda Staunton and Michael Gambon), who learned about London from a British explorer. Now in need of a new home, the youngster heads across the sea and takes the name of Paddington Station when he meets the Brown family: over-cautious dad (Hugh Bonneville), over-curious mum (Sally Hawkins), sulking teen Judy (Madeleine Harris), inventive pre-teen Jonathan (Samuel Joslin) and feisty relative Mrs Bird (Julie Walters). As they help him find the explorer, he has a series of adventures, unaware that the taxidermist Millicent (Nicole Kidman) is on his trail, determined to add him to the species on exhibition at the Natural History Museum.

This Cruella De Vil-style subplot would be seriously annoying if King ever let it take over the movie, but it always remains secondary to Paddington's mayhem-causing behaviour and his bonding with the Browns. It also provides some genuine tension in a climactic action sequence in the museum. But most of the film is dedicated to Paddington's comically ridiculous antics, and Whishaw voices him with just the right mixture of curiosity and hapless mischief to make him irresistible.

Hugh Bonneville Ben Whishaw

The long awaited Paddington Bear movie, which opens in UK theatres next weekend (November 28th) has been given a parental guidance reference by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The PG rating was given after the classifications board found the film contained "dangerous behaviour, mild threat, innuendo and mild bad language.”

"Downton Abbey" Cast Use Water Bottle-Gate To Raise Awareness For Charity

You’d think that a minor promotional mishap with a successful TV show would take a back seat to, you know, everything else that’s going on in the world. Not so, naive friends. Not when the show in question is Downton Abbey and the promotional mishap – what has now been dubbed Water Bottle-gate.

The picture, which depicts Lord Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and daughter Edith (Laura Carmichael) standing in one of their impressive stately rooms, features an unexpected decoation on the mantelpiece; a very modern plastic water bottle. Nestled between two ornate vases, the otherwise innocuous object sticks out like a sore thumb.

'Downton Abbey' is known for its meticulous attention to detail, and they even employ an expert, Alastair Bruce, to make sure the show is historically accurate. However it's not actually the first anachronism in the show, with previous episodes featuring television aerials, double-yellow lines and even a modern conservatory. As such, this gaffe didn't go unnoticed by leagions of eagle-eyed fans online when the picture was uploaded onto social media.

Paddington Bear Makes Debut In Funny New Trailer…Minus His Voice

Colin Firth Nicole Kidman Jim Broadbent Julie Walters Sally Hawkins Hugh Bonneville Paul King

Missing the lead actor in your movie four months before its release? No problem! As was evidently thought by director Paul King and the makers of the upcoming children's adaptation, Paddington. A new trailer has been released for the live action movie, which is based on Michael Bond's Paddington Bear creation, whilst neatly side-stepping the absence of a voice for the titular brown bear.

Colin Firth had been cast as the voice of Paddington - the only animated character in the movie - but stepped away from the role after it was decided that his tones didn't fit theanimation. "It's been bittersweet to see this delightful creature take shape and come to the sad realisation that he simply doesn't have my voice," the actor explained last month.

'W1A' Is A BBC Mockumentary, Without The Mocking

Hugh Bonneville Sarah Parish Carol Vorderman

As Sarah Parish appeared on the One Show on Wednesday ahead of new comedy 'W1A's' debut episode, there was much to be made about how good the BBC is at poking fun at itself.  Only, it's not really, and the team that brought us 'Twenty Twelve' don't appear to have gone anywhere near far enough with their latest offering.

Sure, the first episode brought about a passing reference to the Jimmy Savile affair as "a learning opportunity" but other than that, it seems as though the writers missed a golden opportunity to tap into the endless mine of material that the corporation has offered up over the past couple of years.

'The Monuments Men' Just "Another War Film"? George Clooney Would Disagree [Trailer + Pictures]

World War II movies: haven't we had our fill of them yet? Apparently not, according to George Clooney who is currently watching his new war film, The Monuments Men, open across the world after months of anticipation. For every soldier there are a thousand stories and millions fought across all of the nations involved in the Second World War. If that's the case, we've barely scratched the surface.

The Monuments Men Review

Good

For an amazing true story performed by such a strong A-list cast, this is an oddly uninvolving film. Fragmented and uneven, it shifts from comedy to drama to romance to adventure, never letting us get the feel of any sequence. In other words, the episodic structure would have been much more suitable to a longer-format TV series. Even so, this is a fascinating chapter of history that we haven't heard nearly enough about. And the actors are good enough to keep us entertained.

It takes place as the tide begins to turn during World War II, and art historian Frank (Clooney) recruits a team of experts to protect Europe's most important paintings, sculptures and monuments from both Allied bombing and Nazi plundering. He recruits a handful of Americans (Damon, Murray, Goodman and Balaban) to work with a Brit (Bonneville) and a Frenchman (Dujardin), and as they spread out around the continent, they discover that the real problem is that Hitler is stealing art on a massive scale and hiding it somewhere. Working with a resistance-minded French museum curator (Blanchett), they are able to find where some 5 million stolen pieces are stashed.

The central theme is whether art is worth risking your life to save. And if Clooney and Heslov had allowed this idea to seep through the pores of the script, it might have carried a real wallop. But they announce it over and over again, never giving us a chance to think about it ourselves. Everything about the movie is just as unsubtle, with each sequence played for laughs, thrills, drama or romance, as required. Which means that nothing emerges as organic for these simplistically defined characters, who are a composite of some 350 Monuments Men and Women who did a job no one thought was possible. Even so, it's fun to watch these actors play with the material, stirring in snappy details here and there and of course playing on their strong chemistry.
