The event is 43 years old, as it was first held in 1970. Since then, thousands of fans have flocked to the event, using it as an opportunity to dress up as their favourite character and mingle.

Thursdays and Friday's events focus on the publishers, writers and producers behind comics and television programmes. These include those working behind the scenes of shows such as The Big Bang Theory, Battlestar Galactica and The X-Files. The stars of these shows will also be making an appearance in talk panels over the weekend: Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny return for a special 20th anniversary reunion of The X-Files

Representing Veronica Mars are its stars: Kristen Bell, Francis Capra, Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni. For the Riddick panel, Vin Diesel will be discussing the film.

A-listers will be making more of an appearance on Saturday and Sunday. These include Sandra Bullock for her upcoming fantasy film Gravity; Hugh Jackman for The Wolverine; Eva Green for 300: Rise Of An Empire and Joss Whedon for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

For fans turning up to see certain events, including last year's Avengers panel, there are some surprises in store. Last year the entire Avenger's cast appeared on stage together. With rumours in the works of upcoming DC Comic films, such as Wonder Woman, will the film studios use this event as a perfect opportunity to test the waters?
