A sequel to SyFy's Sharknado has been given the go-ahead by the network's producers. Sharknado aired on SyFy last Thursday (11th July). It was hugely popular attracting an audience of 1.4 million and received thousands of Twitter comments.

Advertisements for the TV movie simply read: 'Sharknado - Enough Said'. Producers have asked viewers to Tweet in their suggestions for a Sharknado sequel title. As the film will be set in New York (the first was set in L.A.), two suggestions have been 'Sharknado 2: Sharks And The City' or 'Sharknado 2: Taking A Bite Out Of The Big Apple'

Sharknado is, for anyone who has missed its Twitter fuelled success, about a shark-filled tornado. The tagline, 'Enough Said', sums it up fairly well. Hundreds of sharks are swept up into a tornado and dropped all over Los Angeles. A group of friends, after witnessing the destruction of L.A. and its population, decide to destroy the threat. They do so by throwing bombs from a helicopter into the heart of the tornado.

SyFy producer Thomas Vitale described viewers' reaction to Sharknado as "a perfect storm - on television". This is certainly accurate as, at pivotal moments in the film, Twitter comments reached up to 5000 a minute, according to a Guardian article.

Vitale went on to say he understands Sharknado's "fans are clamouring for a sequel". He made the suggestion it could be a "prequel", however as there was no reference in the first film to any previous sharknado incident (it's not really something one would forget), this could cause difficulties.

Tara Reid, who starred in Sharknado, has said she would be happy to reprise her role in a sequel. However, SyFy producers have yet to reveal if the next film will retain the original cast.

Alongside Ried, the disaster movie starred Cassie Scerbo (Make It Or Break It), Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills, 90210) and John Heard (The Pelican Brief).

Vitale has promised "Sharknado 2 will be lots of fun". He said SyFy would announce more details as the project progresses. Sharknado 2 is scheduled to be released in 2014.
