A Twitter campaign to persuade Disney to give Princess Elsa a girlfriend in the upcoming sequel to Frozen has gone viral.

The petition, with the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, is aiming to make Princess Elsa the first LGBT Disney princess in the studio’s history.

After all, the narrative arc of Princess Elsa in the first Frozen movie was of a journey to acceptance of her powers, summed up by her empowering number ‘Let It Go’, and it was widely interpreted as a metaphor for coming out. So, the new campaign is aiming to put that subtext into plain view in the sequel by giving the character a female love interest.

Who Is Anna Faith Carlson, The Real Life Elsa From 'Frozen'?

Kristen Bell Idina Menzel

We think everyone can agree when we say that Disney’s Frozen has been pretty successful. Since its release in 2013 it’s earned around $1.2 billion and is the fifth highest grossing film of all time, not to mention the highest-grossing animated film and Disney’s highest-grossing release.

The figures speak for themselves but what’s more important is how loved the characters have become in such a short space of time. Sisters Elsa, voiced by Idina Menzel, and Anna, by Kristen Bell, are the heart of the film, and have enthralled little girls (and grown ones) and offered up a new mould for the typical Disney princess - a more believable and relatable one.

Time To Put A Line Under John Travolta’s Idina Menzel Oscars Faux Pas?

John Travolta Idina Menzel

Remember The Oscars? They were about 7 years ago and the 2015 ceremony is basically tomorrow. If you watched Ellen DeGeneres host this year’s, though, or you have a passing interest in awards season – OR you have an internet connection at work or at home – you probably won’t have missed John Travolta’s mispronunciation of Idina Menzel, calling her ‘Adele Dazeem.’

John TravoltaJohn Travolta has dealt with his silly mistake

It was so, so funny. Not just because he got her name wrong, that’s just a funny thing for any celeb to do. It was John Travolta. He got the name really wrong. And he had to call Menzel “wickedly funny” before getting her name really wrong. Now, though, it’s probably time to stop laughing at poor John, because he tried, and he’s been really nice since.

Spring Might Be Coming, But 'Frozen' Won't Let Go Of The Billboard No. 1

Idina Menzel Michael Jackson

The Frozen soundtrack has topped the Billboard Chart for the sixth week in a row, proving that Idina Menzel is a national treasure. Who cares that it’s the first day of spring. Obviously any season can be Frozen season, as long as Let It Go is playing. The soundtrack to the icy Disney flick is back at No. 1 this week with 99,000 copies in the week ending March 16, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s 1% down from the week before, but still enough to put Frozen firmly in the lead, THR reports.

Frozen Still
Disney's princess flick celebrates independance and tops records in all categories.

The week before, the movie soundtrack ended up in third place, with an easily calculable 1% more for 100,000 copies. This makes the Frozen soundtrack the first album to pass the million sales mark for 2014.This year, the compilation has sold 1.1 million, bringing its total for 2013 and 2014 to a matching 1.4 million sales. The set was released last November, and it sold 338,000 in 2013. This makes the sixth nonconsecutive week atop the chart for Frozen. It first topped the list dated Jan. 18, reflecting the sales week that ended Jan. 5.

A conservative US pastor has lifted the lid on his beliefs towards Disney's award-winning animation, Frozen, which he says promotes both homosexuality and bestiality in children. The 86th Academy Awards

The 86th Academy Awards: The night we'd all been waiting for was finally here: this year's Oscars ceremony has come and gone along with another ground-breaking year in cinema. 12 Years a Slave predictably took Best Picture but Gravity emerged as the movie of the evening with seven awards, five of which were in the technical categories. Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett triumphed with their respective acting awards, pizza was served, Lupita Nyong'o was the darling of yet another awards show and high-scoring host Ellen Degeneres wrapped up the festivities with a neat and expertly-timed bow.

The Oscars Selfie: They say a picture speaks a thousand words but nowadays an image is judged by how many retweets it can get within the shortest space of time. When Ellen Degeneres decided to get a couple of stars together for an impromptu selfie, she probably didn't expect the shot - which featured Bradley Cooper, Brangeline, JLaw, Lupita, Kevin Spacey, Jared Leto, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep - to surpass Obama's re-election shot's previous world record. The snap broke Twitter, attracting 80,000 retweets within 30 minutes and 1.2 million in an hour.

Idina "Adele Dazeem" Menzel Rolling In Success After John Travolta's Oscars Blunder

Idina Menzel John Travolta

If you haven’t been keeping up to date on pop culture news, you might not recognize the name Adele Dazeem. That’s because it was made up by John Travolta during the strangest onstage blunder the Oscars have seen in a while. It’s Idina Menzel, or at least it was supposed to be. As it turns out, the newly renamed (in Travolta’s mind, at least) Frozen star might have a lot to gain from the hilarious mistake.

Idina Menzel
Travolta might not have known her name, but now everybody else does.

There’s nothing like a mishap to get the public talking, after all. And the mistake has put Menzel in the spotlight in a big way. We’re not just talking about Slate’s “Travolta-fy Your Name” game, although it’s hilarious and worth checking out. Since Sunday night, Idina “Dazeem” Menzel has given interviews, appeared on Tonight for a Let It Go cover with The Roots and gotten tons of free press for her new Broadway show, “If/Then,” – the latter thanks to a fake playbill insert for the production, touting the Adele Dazeem as one of the stars. It later turned out that the augmented playbill had been a fake, with a source saying for the New York Daily News: “Somebody put that on Twitter; it’s not real.”

Idina Menzel Actually Becomes Queen Elsa For "Let It Go" Oscars Performance

Idina Menzel

Disney’s juggernaut Frozen, which has been sweeping the North American box office since its release in November 2013, might not have won big at the Oscars, but it was a major presence none the less. It won Best Animated Feature, sure, but many were baffled that the Disney flick, starring Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, wasn’t even nominated for any of the bigger awards.

Idina Menzel
Menzel made a splash with Frozen, despite never actually appearing on screen.

Still, Menzel stole some of the spotlight back for Frozen, with her live performance of the breakaway hit Let It Go. The song, sung in the film by the gentle, but repressed queen Elsa, sounded even better live on stage at LA’s Dolby Theater. Written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, "Let It Go," the anthem of Menzel's character Queen Elsa was nominated for Best Original Song and won, topping tracks like "Happy" from Despicable Me 2, "Ordinary Love" from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and "The Moon Song" from Her.

Oscar Producers Zadan And Meron Tease Some Of This Year's Biggest Moments

Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron made a controversial hit out of the Oscars last year, but they might be on thin ice this time. Getting Seth McFarlane to host anything is a risky bet and his antics last year got a lot of people – notably the feminist crowd – pretty riled up. The controversy served its purpose. Last year’s show pulled in 40.3 million US viewers, the largest audience the show has had in three years. Zadan and Meron’s show was a hit with the key 18-49 demographic and the duo were invited back this year.

Ellen Degeneres
Ellen might be a safer choice for host, but she is far from boring.

And yet. The choice of Ellen for this year’s host suggests that the producers were at least a little bit intimidated by last year’s backlash. This year’s host, Ellen, while hilarious and ever entertaining, is a much safer option and has proven appeal with the Oscars’ key demo – women.

Idina Menzel - Let It Go

Tony award-winning Broadway sensation Idina Menzel unveils 'Let It Go' as a single following its appearance in the Walt Disney Animation adventure 'Frozen' in which she stars as the troubled Snow Queen, Elsa.

The video for the track is a clip taken from the film showing Elsa venturing up a snowy mountain looking sadly down at the ice disaster she has made of the kingdom. She appears guilty about not being able to hold in her power and just wants to hide and cut herself off from everybody, before transforming into the ice enchantress she truly is and accepting that she can't be the perfect girl everyone expects her to be and she should enjoy her unique gift instead. The song is a catchy orchestral number with a power to it that is so acutely demonstrated by Menzel's incredible vocals.

The movie, directed by Chris Buck, opened with huge success and has now been nominated for two Golden Globes with 'Let It Go' being given a nod for Best Original Song and the movie being up for Best Animated Film. If successful, the Best Song award will go to writers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who have previously revealed it was the first song they wrote for the film.

After two weeks on top, Catching Fire was knocked over by the Disney animated feature, which raked in $31.6 million in weekend sales alone. Since its release on November 22, Frozen has earned $190.2 million, according to Rentrak.

Frozen Still
Besides being very seasonally appropriate, Frozen also boasts beautiful animation.

Frozen is a re-imagining of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Snow Queen. The film, which tells the story of two estranged princesses in an icy kingdom, topped the box office in its second week of release, while Catching Fire fell behind with just $27 million earned in the Friday – Sunday period, according to Businessweek.

Frozen Review

Excellent

Disney learns a lesson from Pixar's Brave, giving these orphaned princesses some feisty purpose that doesn't depend on a man. Everything else about this movie is fairly formulaic, including the requisite goofy sidekick character. But the frosty animation adds a stately, dramatic tone that's picked up by Broadway-style songs and just a hint of moral complexity in the story, which is based on Hans Christian Andersen's story The Snow Queen.

With her ability to freeze anything at a touch, young Queen Elsa (voiced by Menzel) has spent her life hidden away in the castle. No one can know her secret, including her restless little sister Anna (Bell), who meets her dream man in Hans (Fontana) on the day of Elsa's coronation. But Elsa's startled reaction to this news triggers an ice age in the kingdom, which sends Elsa fleeing to hide in the mountains. So Anna decides to track her down. She enlists help from local delivery boy Kristoff (Groff) and his pet reindeer, and as they head into the hills they encounter one of Elsa's newest creations: a singing, dancing, scatterbrained snowman named Olaf (Gad).

The winter wonderland setting gives the animators a lot to work with, and the imagery is spectacular. We actually shiver at the gleaming ice and snowy landscapes, which are so detailed that they make us want to see the film again. The characters are also sharply rendered, although they're designed without much subtlety, including the usual Disney physicality in the girls' big-eyed Barbie-like figures. But the plot keeps us off balance by, for example, giving Anna two eligible men to choose between. And also by making Elsa so internally conflicted about her unwanted powers.

Right at the business end of the year, Disney appear to have snatched away the Oscar for Best Animated Feature from the competition. It looks like Disney have hit the jackpot once again, as their latest animation, the festive Frozen, is a hit with critics and looks as though it could be a hit in cinemas too. Frozen
The film is being commended for its visuals

"This is an icy, snowy world that Disney has never done before," director Chris Buck insisted in a recent featurette for the movie. Stars Kristen Bell and Josh Gad both gushed over the extent of the visuals on offer, with producer Peter del Vecho adding, "We did draw a lot of inspiration from Norway, in fact we sent our art direction team to Norway as the jumping off point."

A Tight Schedule And Ambitious Visuals Define Disney's Latest Try For The Oscars, "Frozen"

Kristen Bell Idina Menzel

Today marks the wide release of Disney’s animated feature Frozen and, after months of promotion, the revamped version of a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale is already generating Oscar buzz. Frozen tells Andersen’s story of the Snow Queen, only with a slight twist. In the original, a young girl, Greta has to use her optimism to save her friend Kai from the curse of the Snow Queen. This version tells the story of two princesses (this is Disney, we’re talking about after all), one of whom is born with the power to control weather. When Princess Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) is paralyzed with fear and unable to control her power, perpetual winter sets over the Norwegian kingdom of Arendelle. It is then up to her sister Anna (Kristen Bell) to help Elsa and save the kingdom.

Anna is set to be the fearless Queen of Arendelle, but when her sister Elsa starts suffering the effects of her powers to create snow and ice and manages to cloak the entire city with a bitter winter, Anna realises that it's up to her to deal with it. It's only July, but it's bound to be unseasonal for eternity unless Anna can find her sister - now known as the Snow Queen - and get her to break the spell. She sets out on a treacherous mission to look for her alongside her best friend Kristoff, an ice breaker (quite literally), and his super-friendly reindeer Sven. Along the way they meet the bumbling, nasally challenged snowman Olaf as well as several unwelcome mountain dwellers - but that's the least of their worries when it turns out that Anna's beloved sibling is being seen as a ruthless monster, which she knows, deep down, she isn't.

Olaf meets Sven in 'Frozen'Olaf meets Sven in 'Frozen'

'Frozen' is the new Disney animation based on a much-loved tale that is due to hit the UK this winter (most appropriately) starring Kristen Bell.

Fairytales are definitely becoming popular again with some of the world's favourites being transferred to stunning, high-energy and often grisly live action flicks, among them being 'Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters', 'Snow White and the Huntsman' and not to mention the TV series 'Once Upon a Time' which is now in its third season. However, Disney has brought the delight back to children and reverted to what they are known for with their (albeit vague) rendition of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Snow Queen' in an animated adventure entitled 'Frozen'. Starring Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Broadway sensation Idina Menzel, it tells the story of Anna's quest to undo her sister Elsa's power over the kingdom of Arendelle, which she has cursed into eternal winter, accompanied by her friend Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and a snowman called Olaf.

'I/Then' : Washington Chosen As Testing Ground For Idina Menzel Musical

Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel’s new musical, entitled If / Then will be opening at Washington’s National Theatre. Using Washington as a Broadway tryout town, the musical will be presented from November 5 to December 8, with the official opening taking place on November 24. The play is described by Washington Post as being about a woman on the brink of turning 40 (played by Menzel), who moves from New York to Denver and is an exploration of how much of our lives are determined by fate and how much by design.

The show’s producer, David Stone said “It’s about how we choose our lives and how our lives choose us. That’s an idea that’s very rich and very moving.” Not only has If / Then’s appointment in Washington reinvigorated the city’s position as a pre-Broadway testing ground, but the casting of Menzel marks a welcome return to the stage for the 41 year old actress. Menzel, who is married to her former Rent cast member Taye Diggs, has been focusing on concert tours of late, as well as starring in Glee as the mother of Rachel (Lea Michele’s character). Acccording to the Washington Post, she has performed in the three workshop productions that have taken place for If / Then and will also appear in the fourth, in April. Stone commented “she’s been involved in it for a long time.”

Enchanted Review

Very Good
In a fairly surprising move, Disney has come forward and shown it has an actual sense of humor about its patented brand of cheesy, clichéd, and relentless peppiness. Previously, self-reference has been limited to cross marketing between one Disney film and the next; but in Enchanted the message seems to be: Yeah, we know we've got our share of hokey archetypes, but it works for us. It's a refreshing attitude.

Giselle lives in the conflation of every single Disney trope ever, in an animated, magical fairy-tale kingdom full of songs of her one true love. The evil queen (who is also a wicked stepmother) can't have some upstart marry the prince and move in on her territory, so she banishes Giselle from animation to reality: New York, to be precise.
