The soundtrack for Disney's 'Frozen' keeps topping the Billboard 200 charts, what's so great about it?
The question is really, what’s not good about the Frozen soundtrack? We’ve been playing it repeatedly on Spotify since the movie first came out, but why has it struck such a chord with kids and adults alike? We thought we’d talk you through why we think the Frozen songs may make up the greatest Disney soundtrack of all time. A big claim, but we reckon we can back it up.
Frozen has become the highest grossing animated film of all time
Possibly the catchiest song from the Frozen soundtrack, “Do You Want To Build A Snowman”, sung by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel AKA Elsa and Anna, hears Anna sadly serenade her big sister in the hope that she’ll come out and play with her. It sets the tone perfectly for the rest of the film, showing how sad little Anna is about her sister distancing herself. It’s the love between these two sisters that is the important theme in the animated film, rather than the usual Prince/Princess dynamic. This is important in itself, it’s a little dated these days to expect the typical boys meet girl, boy saves girl, storyline. Frozen steers away from this, it’s a wholly more modern concept that any of the previous Disney movies.
Anna’s duet with Prince Hans of the Southern Isles isn’t your typical Disney love song. But then, this isn’t your typical Disney story! Hans sings to the young princess of Arundelle, “I mean it’s crazy, we finish each other’s….” “Sandwiches!” Anna shouts, oblivious of the implication at her totally misdirected affection. Disney has done something really great here, showing young fans that unlike Princess Aurora and Prince Philip, or Snow White and Prince Charming, it often takes a little longer to get to know each other before diving straight into a relationship and it's wise to take your time.
Listen to Idina Menzel "Let It Go"
“Let It Go” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and it thoroughly deserves the title. A powerful ballad, which perfectly reflects the plot line but is layered. Frozen is about accepting yourself for what you are, and “Let It Go” is Anna’s release from pretending to be something she is not. It’s the type of song young Disney fans should be listening to.
Kristoff and Sven the reindeer are best buds
For a little light comic relief, Kristoff and his reindeer Sven sing their own little ditty. OK, Kristoff may be singing in Sven’s place, but we’re pretty sure if reindeer could talk, they would sing “Reindeer(s) Are Better Than People.” Kristoff sings “People smell better than reindeers, Sven don’t you think I’m right?” and then, in Sven’s voice, “That’s once again true, for all except you!”, “You got me, let’s call it a night!” You guys.
However funny Kristoff and Sven’s duet may be, it’s Olaf the snowman’s sonnet to summer which wins in the silly, but sentimental stakes. Fortunately, when your friend is as powerful as Anna turns out to be, you never need to find out “what frozen things do in summer.”
