The festive season is now well and truly upon us and it seems Frozen toys are (unsurprisingly) topping most little girls’ Christmas lists. Yes for the first time in 11 years Barbie is no longer the number one toy requested by girls, as Frozen fever continues to take over.

FrozenAnna and Elsa dolls look set to be the big sellers this Christmas

A study released by the National Retail Federation showed that 20% of parents (one in five) plan to buy Frozen merchandise for their daughters. Long reigning queen Barbie was knocked down to second place receiving 16.8% of the votes.

Monster High and American Girl dolls also made the top five, while Lego products came in at number six. For the boys Lego topped the list, followed by ‘cars and trucks’ and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles merchandise.

While its now been a year since Frozen first hit cinemas the film’s popularity shows no signs of waning anytime soon. During Halloween time, Frozen costumes were the most searched for term online and Elsa dolls have caused more than a few parental stampedes in the run up to the festive season.

But for many mums and dads, Frozen stars Elsa and Anna are a welcome change from the traditional Barbie doll. Despite Elsa also being blonde, blue-eyed and slim waisted, the modern Disney princess is considered to be a better role model for young girls thanks to her strong personality.

Fans of the Disney movie should also be extra happy this weekend as star Idina Menzel (the voice of Elsa) has seemingly confirmed that a sequel in the works. During an interview with the Telegraph Menzel said that both a stage show and a sequel were all currently "in the works”, but did not give any further details.
