The Frozen star was promoting her TV remake of 1988 film Beaches in a TV interview on Tuesday night (24Jan17) when she said she couldn't listen to Meshell Ndegeocello's album Bitter because it's so beautiful, "It makes me just want to slit my wrists."

She was blasted by Jessica Cruz, executive director of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), who accused Idina of making light of a serious topic. She added in a statement, "It shows a lack of education around the pain families and individuals go through and further stigmatises mental health."

On Thursday (26Jan17), the actress/singer apologised for her "thoughtless comment" in a statement issued to and admitted she "quickly realized how wrong it was."

She continued: "The National Alliance on Mental Illness was right; it is not an appropriate metaphor. I was wrong and truly apologize. Depression, self-harm, and suicide are serious issues and deserve our utmost concern and sensitivity."

She thanked NAMI for highlighting her mistake and raising awareness about the issue and concluded, "Again, my sincerest regret and apologies."

However, it wasn't the first time Idina has joked about self-harm. In a 2014 interview with the New York Times she said if people found Christmas depressing, her festive album "might make you want to slit your wrists."
