Two of the live musical performers at this year’s Super Bowl have both intimated that they’ll be supporting the Seattle Seahawks this weekend. Katy Perry, who is set headline the halftime show, and Idina Menzel, who will sing the national anthem, have both expressed preferences for the Seahawks.

At Media Day ahead of Sunday afternoon’s showdown at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, Perry was the first to say that she’ll be rooting for the North-West team over the New England Patriots.

Dressed in an eye-catching get-up with footballs emblazoned everywhere on the outfit, the 30 year old pop star said “I love the Seahawks because of Russell [Wilson, quarterback], and I think that I’m probably going to go for them.”

She also revealed that she and Wilson had been exchanging friendly text messages, including dietary tips ahead of big performances. Perry said that she had asked the star quarterback for food advice ahead of the halftime show and, expecting a list of healthy things, got the response “cheeseburgers and pizzas.”

When a reporter asked if any of the players had caught her eye, she responded cannily with “I’m just here so I don’t get fined”, a reference to Seattle’s player Marshawn Lynch who responded 29 times with the same phrase during a compulsory press conference the day before.

Idina Menzel
Frozen singer Idina Menzel will also be backing Seattle for victory

Menzel, the singer of the 2014-dominating Disney movie Frozen, had a rather more cynical reason for supporting the Seahawks. “Because I’m a New Yorker and I cannot root for the Patriots… I will root for Seattle.”

The celebrity stars have enlarged the ranks of the 12th men, the nicknames for Seahawks supporters. Super Bowl XLIX kicks off at 4:30pm MST on Sunday 1st February, and will be broadcast on NBC.
