LATEST: Soul legend Ike Turner has publicly apologised to his ex-wife TINA for physically abusing her during their tumultuous 16-year relationship. The Proud Mary singer issued the apology following the rejection by the mayor of St. Louis, Missouri, to honour the star by naming 2 September Ike Turner Day. Organisers of the Big Muddy Blues Festival in the city - where Turner is due to perform - hoped to pay tribute to 75-year-old with the one day celebrations, but their request was turned down by Mayor Francis Slay, who declined to reveal the reason behind his decision. Some reports have speculated Turner's admittance to slapping and punching Tina throughout their marriage in the 1960s may have contributed to the refusal. But Turner insists he is unperturbed by the rejection and "doesn't owe" anyone, apart from his ex-love, an apology for his past behaviour. He says, "I just care about making people happy in the audience. "All I can say, and I would say this only to her, is 'I'm sorry'. But I can't undo yesterday. I don't owe anybody else that."
