The Academy Awards Boycott: Both Sides Of The Debate

Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Chris Rock Will Smith Jada Pinkett-Smith

This year's Academy Awards season is turning out to be a pretty intense ride, with the uproar over the nominations' lack of cultural diversity causing a division in the entertainment world. While some people are saying that they're planning to boycott the ceremony when it was revealed that not one black actor or director had been nominated, others are saying that the situation has been blown way out of proportion.

Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will SmithJada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith are skipping the 2016 Oscars ceremony

So what exactly is the debate? This is year is the second year in a row that not one person of colour has been nominated for an Oscar in the major categories. It's not even that it hasn't been an option, especially when you look at the Golden Globe nominations and the calibre of movies featuring black lead actors in 2015 like 'Chi-Raq', 'Creed', 'Beasts of No Nation', 'Straight Outta Compton' and 'Concussion'. Last year, admittedly, did see fewer options. However, 'Selma' was one of the biggest movies of the year (and probably one of the most important in this decade) but still only managed to scoop a Best Original Song prize. Justin Simien's 'Dear White People' wasn't recognised at all and nor was Denzel Washington's 'The Equalizer'.

It turns out though that the co-stars are nothing more than that and the Smith union is under no threat.

Fall Of The Prince: Sony Lose Millions On Will Smith's 'After Earth'

Will Smith Jada Pinkett-Smith Tom Cruise Matt Damon

Is Will Smith losing his edge as Hollywood's most bankable box-office star? We've seen chinks in Tom Cruise's commercial armour in recent years, though Smith appears to be in free-fall - and he doesn't have the Mission Impossible franchise to fall back on.

His latest movie - M. Night Shymalan's After Earth - is a weak, weak effort that left audiences with little patience left for the Indian-American director and doubts over Smith's eye for a decent family flick. It's no secret that the movie star pulled out all the stops to get the sci-fi movie made, enlisting his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith as a producer and casting himself and son Jaden Smith as the lead stars.

The film failed to top the box-office, pulling in $27.5 million after a 12 per cent score on reviews aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie could now lose tens of millions should it not score big overseas. Commentators agree that the hapless Shymalan will take the biggest hit from the box-office disaster and it's possible that the major studios will no longer trust the The Last Airbender director with big-budgets, however, After Earth also proves that Will Smith's supposed bulletproof image is not so solid and that the four years between Seven Pounds and Men In Black 3 did little to maintain his position as the world's most bankable star. "One thing you've got to do as an actor is portfolio management," said an industry source, "Will went through a place where he didn't do a lot of movies, and none has been great..He could still be highly successful, but it was automatic before. Now audiences will look more carefully."

Will Smith's ‘After Earth,’ Dubbed ‘The Worst Movie Ever Made’

Will Smith Jaden Smith Jada Pinkett-Smith M. Night Shyamalan

After Earth, the new sci-fi adventure starring father and son team Will and Jaden Smith, has been savaged by critics ahead of its release today (May 31, 2013). Though the premise has the makings of a reasonable sci-fi movie – two guys stranded on earth years after civilization – somewhere along the line something has gone very, very wrong. Perhaps the blame lies with M. Night Shyamalan, a director who is on an uncomfortably bad run with the critics that shows no signs of slowing up.

The movie follows Will Smith as Cypher Raige, a stern general who is tasked with a peacekeeping mission on earth, one thousand years after humanity settled elsewhere. Under the general’s stewardship is a young teenager named Kitai – also his son – who helps with the mission though all too regularly finds himself in trouble with the various beasts that still inhabit earth.

Holding a dismal score of just 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, After Earth has come in for some heavy, heavy criticism. Sure, the critics may be having their usual fun with Shyamalan (The Last Airbender etc) though there really isn't a positive word to be found. Joe Morgensten of the Wall Street Journal asked, “Is "After Earth" the worst movie ever made?” while Betsy Sharkey of the L.A. Times wrote, “There is no small irony that this sci-fi action adventure is about surviving a serious crash. The scorched earth left behind by "After Earth" is sure to leave a scar on everyone involved.”

Will Smith was the star attraction alongside his son and co-star Jaden Smith, and he also brought along his other two children Willow Smith and Trey Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. Joining them were 'After Earth' director M. Night Shyamalan (the man behind 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Village'), Smith's co-star Kristofer Hivju, Oscar-nominated director Spike Lee and rapper 50 Cent. We’re very grateful to Jada Pinkett Smith for taking time out to clear up exactly what she meant when she insinuated that she and hubby Will Smith have an open relationship. We just wish she’d said something that actually made sense to other right-minded humans. The explanation that Jada gave was that her marriage to Will is not an “open relationship” but a “grown one.” Any clues? Us neither. Did she mean a grown-up one? Or perhaps she meant that the relationship has literally grown... to include other people. Frankly, we’re baffled.

Jada was so put out by comments about her recent interview with Huffington Post (in which she said that “Will can do whatever he wants”) that she posted a lengthy missive on her Facebook page to explain her stance to those she felt had misunderstood her comments. She started by saying “Let me first say this, there are far more important things to talk about in regards to what is happening in the world than whether I have an open marriage or not. I am addressing this issue because a very important subject has been born from discussions about my statement that may be worthy of addressing. The statement I made in regard to, 'Will can do whatever he wants,' has illuminated the need to discuss the relationship between trust and love and how they co-exist.”

She then concluded her statement by saying “Should we be married to individuals who can not be responsible for themselves and their families within their freedom? Should we be in relationships with individuals who we can not entrust to their own values, integrity, and LOVE...for us??? Here is how I will change my statement...Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship...this means we have a GROWN one.” Talk about muddying the waters, Jada.

Jada Pinkett-Smith Addresses Rumours Over Her 'Open Marriage' With Will Smith

Jada Pinkett-Smith Will Smith

Jada Pinkett-Smith has gone on record to address one of the most dogged rumours circulating around Tinseltown for the past few years, revealing what really is the deal with her marriage to Will Smith. During a live chat with HuffPost Live, Jada was quizzed on her 16-year marriage with Will and the longstanding rumours that have followed the Smiths over their decade and a half of marriage, with wife of one of the planets most famous actors finally admitting what we had thought all along: the two have an open marriage.

When the question about their marriage was popped, Jada replied, "I think that people get that idea because Will and I are very relaxed with one another," adding, "But I've always told Will 'You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay,' because at the end of the day, Will is his own man."

Your First Time: Lena Dunham's Unusual Method Of Supporting Barack Obama (Video)

Lena Dunham Barack Obama Jay Z Beyonce Knowles Chris Rock Will Smith Jada Pinkett-Smith

Wow, Barack Obama really does have all the cool kids on his side, doesn’t he? The hip-hop community are falling over themselves to show their support for Obama, with Jay Z and Beyonce leading the charge there. Chris Rock’s been piping up about his love for Obama, too, as have Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. And the latest in line to go public in their love for the President of the United States of America, in the run-up to next month’s elections is the comedian Lena Dunham, star and creator of HBO’s hot new comedy Girls.

Entitled ‘Your First Time,’ the video starts off with Lena talking seductively about the kind of guy that you want your ‘first time’ to be with and of course, you’ll start off assuming that she’s talking about losing your virginity, as she says things like “The first time shouldn't be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy. Someone who really cares about and understands women… a guy who cares whether you get health insurance and specifically whether you get birth control.” Pretty quickly, though, you realize that Lena isn’t talking about sex at all, but voting for the first time and quips that when she did, she went from being a girl to a woman.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted Review

OK

Instead of developing the characters or situations for comedy gold, the filmmakers instead just crank up the chaos. So while some scenes are both funny and visually impressive, this second sequel is simply too inane to make us hope there will be a part 4. Very young kids may be distracted by the hectic pacing and hyperactive characters, but everyone else will quickly be bored by the nonstop mayhem, simply because there's nothing interesting going on.

Anxious lion Alex (Stiller), chatty zebra Marty (Rock), nerdy giraffe Melman (Schwimmer) and silly hippo Gloria (Smith) are living a Lion King-style existence in Africa, although their only hope for escape has just flown away. Namely, the brainy penguins and their monkey assistants. So our heroes follow them to Monaco, where they all end up on the run from the notorious animal control agent Dubois (McDormand). They run straight into a failing circus, which they set out to bring back to its glory days so they can catch the eye of an American promoter and go home to New York. To do this means working with the current circus acts: sultry cheetah Gia (Chastain), dorky sea lion Stefano (Short) and tetchy tiger Vitaly (Cranston).

The circus premise lets the filmmakers have a lot of visual fun with the characters, most notably in a riotously colourful Cirque du Soleil-on-acid performance in London. But the plot makes no sense at all (if they can get to Monaco, surely they could get to New York, right?), and there are so many new characters that the central quartet feels almost sidelined. Especially since they've also wedged in an under-developed romance for the lemur king (Baron Cohen). Yes, it's all over the place, and being busy is not the same thing as being clever or funny.

The Karate Kid Review

Good
Even though it's corny, unnecessary and far too long, this remake of the 1984 hit is surprisingly engaging. This is mainly due to the crowd-pleasing story and a relatively understated performance from Jackie Chan.

Dre (Smith) is annoyed when his mother (Henson) moves from Detroit to Beijing, where he's mercilessly bullied by a gang of schoolboy thugs led by Cheng (Wang Zhenwei). Sure, there's the cute violinist (Han) to distract him, but things don't really start looking up until the maintenance man (Chan) agrees to teach him kung fu. Now Dre has three goals: learn skills to defend himself, compete in an upcoming tournament against Cheng and his evil mentor (Yu), and of course get the girl.

Bamboozled Review

Very Good
Welcome to a piece of American history. In the old music hall, white comedians and song 'n' dance men would splash their faces in charcoal, maybe throw on a pair of white gloves, then go through the step-n-fetchin' routine, the exotica and the buffoonery of perceived black culture. Jim Crow, Amos 'n' Andy, Mammy, L'il Black Sambo, Uncle Tom, and the Ten Pickaninnies were typical characters thrown on stage and screen for the amusement and mockery of white audiences.

What began as white actors in blackface evolved with the 1950s Amos and Andy Show on television, featuring black actors in blackface. The content remained the same, with Amos and Andy portrayed as lazy, ignorant, chicken eatin', banjo playin', shifty clowns. Once the show lost favor with an outraged public, the television studios put a halt on developing new shows about the black experience -- degrading or otherwise -- for several decades.

The Matrix Revolutions Review

OK
With their third (and hopefully, final) Matrix movie, the Wachowski brothers have delivered a dud so disappointing, they may as well have bussed in Ewoks to save Zion.

To understand why, let's just dive right in.

Collateral Review

Very Good
There are two kinds of roller coasters. The most modern kind uses maglev technology to take you from 0 to 100mph in a matter of seconds. The old-school kind slowly creeps you up an incline before letting gravity pull you down at sickening speeds. Collateral is definitely the latter, and actually delivers more in the build-up than the plummet.

Cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) is having an ordinary night until he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith). They have a pleasant, interesting conversation, which director Michael Mann lets unfold at a natural, almost seductive pace. When they finally part ways, you feel as if you've watched a short romantic comedy. Enter Vincent (Tom Cruise).

The Matrix Reloaded Review

Weak

Here's your review of "The Matrix Reloaded" in a nutshell: One incredibly cool, gravity-defying, CGI-aided, swirling-camera kung-fu melee; one jaw-dropping, 100-mph, against-traffic freeway chase; and way, way too much long-winded, expository, circular, self-important, pseudo-philosophical yappity-yappity-yap.

Writing-directing brothers Larry and Andy Wachowski saddle their cast with endless equivocal prattle while toiling to buttress the complex plot and metaphysical undertone of this picture's uber-stylish 1999 predecessor, which saw what we think is the real world exposed as an elaborate virtual reality prison for the minds of all humanity. Mankind's suspended bodies provide a power source for a race of machines, which a small band of escapees are hoping to destroy in the post-apocalyptic world outside the Matrix.

"We can never see past the choices we don't understand," sage but elusive cyber-prophet The Oracle (Gloria Foster) preaches cryptically to Neo (Keanu Reeves), the cyber-Messianic hero whose realization that physical laws don't apply in the Matrix led to the first film's groundbreaking wire-work martial arts fights and bullet-dodging slow-mo stunts.

The Matrix Revolutions Review

OK

The eye-popping, heart-stopping last hour and a half of "The Matrix Revolutions" more than makes up for everything plodding and ponderous that has taken place since the mind-blowing first hour of the 1999 original.

Astonishing in scale and momentous in scope, it encompasses a spectacular battle between the scrappy, out-numbered but heavily armed defenders of Zion (humanity's last refugee city hidden deep beneath the Earth's scorched surface) and a million-strong swarm of enemy sentinels (those frightening, giant squid-shaped robots) invading from the machine-ruled surface world.

But the monstrous melee may be for naught if uber-human messiah Neo (Keanu Reeves) cannot defeat the invincibly evil, incalculably self-replicating rogue computer program known as Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) in a simultaneous, nuclear-strength airborne-kung-fu showdown inside what's left of the crumbling Matrix (that virtual world pulled over the eyes of the comatose majority of mankind kept in stasis by the machines who feed off our life-force).
