Everest - Featurette Trailer

Quite possibly the most ambitious films of the year, Everest tells the true to life tale of the eight people who suddenly found themselves stuck in a blizzard on the mountain whilst attempting to reach the summit.

Jason Clarke & Jake Gyllenhaal talk about a few of the experiences they faced whilst on this unbelievable shoot. The film team travelled to many different locations, including the foothills of Everest and the Italian Alps to try and recreate the surroundings as accurately as possible. Whilst onset the film makers were constantly put in peril, they were told about avalanche warnings and their sets would occasionally be wiped out by unexpected snow movement.

As Jake Gyllenhaal says in the featurette: 'This production and the intensity of making this movie is absolutely extraordinary - it's a site to behold'.

Everest Trailer

When two different climbing parties set out on the expedition of their lives, they knew there would be dangers; however, no-one could prepare them for the tragedy that was in store. Reaching the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal is every passionate climbers dream, but this isn't a trip to take lightly. Such altitudes and temperatures are not meant to be experienced by human beings as frostbite and altitude sickness are almost inevitable perils, not to mention falling, strong winds and, of course, avalanches. As fate would have it, these climbers are about to run into one of the worst snowstorms ever documented as an earthquake hits the nation and mother nature has no mercy. Victory turns to catastrophe in an event that will change the lives of the survivors.

'Ant-Man' Beats 'Southpaw' And 'Pixels' To Stay On Top Of US Box Office

Paul Rudd Adam Sandler Jake Gyllenhaal

Marvel’s Ant-Man held on to the top spot at the US box office this weekend taking an estimated $24.8 million in its second week, bringing its total so far to $106 million. The comic-book movie, which stars Paul Rudd as the titular character managed to finish the weekend in first place despite competition from three new releases.

ANT-MANAnt-Man has held on to the number one spot at the US box office.

Sony’s Pixels was Ant-Man biggest competition, but it fell short of unseating the tiny superhero finishing with $24 million, which made for a very close call. The film stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James along with a host of vintage video game characters including Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Its plot revolves around aliens attacking the earth using the arcade game regulars.

Southpaw Gives Jake Gyllenhaal Some New Skills

Jake Gyllenhaal

At 34, Jake Gyllenhaal is enjoying the chance to take risks in his career. After earning critical raves in last year's freak-out Nightcrawler, he has transformed himself physically into a lean, mean boxing machine for Southpaw.

Jake Gyllenhaal in SouthpawJake Gyllenhaal got seriously ripped for boxing movie 'Southpaw'

"I just love the idea of exploring, particularly in this period of time in my life, sides of myself that I would be afraid of exploring or afraid to admit," he says of his character Billy Hope. "This guy was trying to figure out his rage and his anger. I'm very curious about my own anger, and anger in general and its effects, and how it can be positive too."

Southpaw Review

OK

Slick direction and meaty performances may be enough for some viewers, but this boxing drama's complete lack of originality keeps it from being something memorable. Centring on a committed performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, it's always watchable, but it's rather annoying that every time an interesting theme is raised the script sidesteps into yet another boxing-movie cliche.

Gyllenhaal plays Billy Hope, an orphan raised in the system who rose to become the world light heavyweight champion. He has savvy wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams) at his side, smart young daughter Leila (Oona Laurence) cheering him on and the fiercest manager (Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson) in the business. But personal failures, unexpected tragedies and financial crises suddenly bring an end to his millionaire lifestyle, leaving him alone and wandering the New York streets in search of a place to live. He seeks help from grizzled gym owner Tick (Forest Whitaker), who helps Billy rebuild himself so he can take on his nemesis (Miguel Gomez).

Billy is such a hot-head that he's not easy to like, continually blowing his top to make everything much worse for himself and his family. Gyllenhaal is an astonishing mass of muscles, scars and tattoos, with a burning inner rage that's startlingly believable. He also works hard to earn the audience's sympathies, despite the blunt superficiality of Kurt Sutter's script. Whitaker's role is even less nuanced; he's little more than the formulaic gruff trainer who's always played by an ageing Oscar winner. McAdams injects some snappy energy in her too-brief role, and it's actually Laurence who emerges as the film's most resonant character, effortlessly stealing her scenes right out from under Gyllenhaal's smashed-in nose.

Accidental Love Trailer

Alice Eckle is a roller-skating waitress deeply in love with Indiana State Trooper Scott. Before the two can get engaged, however, Eckle suffers a severe accident with a nail gun and gets a nail lodged deep in her skull. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't have any health insurance so she is forced to walk away from hospital without any surgery to remove it. In the meantime, she suffers brain damage which causes her to have mood swings, an increased sex drive and unpredictable behaviours. Needless to say, Scott is less than keen on the idea of marrying her now. No matter though, Alice appears to have other things on her mind; she wants to meet young Congressman Howard Birdwell to show her support for his proposition of beginning a healthcare bill. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have a clue what he's talking about, but that doesn't stop her falling head over heels for him.

'Nightcrawler' Might Be A Psychopath's Success Story, But That's Why We Love It

Jake Gyllenhaal Rene Russo

As 'Nightcrawler' hits UK shelves today, we delved deeper into the mind of the so-called protagonist. On the surface, it's a movie about a creepy guy with a ghoulish habit of photographing murder scenes, but look more carefully and you won't be so quick to dismiss Jake Gyllenhaal's dubious character as a regular psychopath.

Jake Gyllenhaal in 'Nightcrawler'
Jake Gyllenhaal seriously impressed critics with 'Nightcrawler' role

Clearly it's true that there's something a little morbid about showing up at the scene of a brutal killing, camera at the ready and with no intention of informing the police, but is it really so morally different from the global interest in ever more weird and grotesque stories and videos? Jake Gyllenhaal doesn't think so. 'It's a subversive comment on where we are today, not only with media but our need and our desperation for more information as a culture on a global level', he reveals. Though, the only difference being, according to him, is that Lou Bloom is chasing down serious stories while we mostly sit around watching cat virals.

Beyond Clueless Review

Excellent

With clips from more than 200 teen movies made in the decade after 1995's Clueless, this lively kaleidoscopic documentary entertainingly traces how America has depicted the teen experience on screen. The film's structure feels a little deliberate, and it of course is looking at a portrayal of puberty, not the real thing. But it's inventively edited by first-time feature director Charlie Lyne, with a snappy pace and some seriously interesting observations along the way.

These 10 years are significant because they marked an expansion in the style of coming-of-age movies, encompassing genres from comedy to sci-fi to horror to explore the clashes between high school factions of jocks, nerds, burnouts, artists and mean girls. Taken together, these films paint a vivid, perhaps exaggerated portrait of adolescence, including key rites of passage, the mob mentality, and the various things that feel threatening to the "herd" (like smart kids or loners). High school is the time when teens experiment with alcohol, partying, rebellion and sex, while facing up to peer pressure and their own mortality for the first time. And ultimately, everyone must navigate this emotionally overwrought period on his or her own.

The film breaks down this experience into five chapters: fitting in (as either a maverick or conformist), acting out (challenging the rules), losing yourself (developing your own identity), toeing the line (being forced to obey the rules) and moving on (growing into an adult). This kind of makes the movie feel like an academic thesis, especially with the somewhat overwritten narration (voiced by teen star Fairuza Balk). But the movie is packed with telling connections between this vast variety of movies, all of which reflect reality without ever depicting it too honestly. Thankfully, Lyne's editing is knowing and often very funny, putting scenes together to say something completely unexpected.
