Life Review

Very Good

Like a mash-up of Alien and Gravity, this ripping sci-fi horror movie is very effective at generating tension and terror. And it helps that an adept cast is on board to give some weight to characters who are rather thinly written. The script, by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, keeps everything lean and mean, concentrating on the scary stuff while ignoring any thematic depth or topicality. But director Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) keeps it moving briskly.

It's set on board the International Space Station, where a specialised six-person crew is examining new soil samples from Mars. Science officer Hugh (Ariyon Bakare) finds alien life in the dirt, and watches in amazement as the cells grow and cooperate to create an interactive jellyfish-like creature, which schoolchildren on Earth name Calvin. Infectious disease doctors David and Miranda (Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson) are concerned that this life-form remains contained in the lab. So Captain Kat (Olga Dihovichnaya) and technicians Roy and Sho (Ryan Reynolds and Hiroyuki Sanada) set out to lock things down. But of course, this proves trickier than they thought it would be.

What follows is, unsurprisingly, a stalker slasher movie in which the crew members go down one by one. Calvin is a quick learner, and grows into a seriously menacing creature, complete with the silly addition of a kind of evil digital face. It also gets a few corny point of view camera angles. But mainly Espinosa holds his nerve, maintaining a believable sense of the science and the setting as things get increasingly out of control. Each terrifying set piece is followed by a brief moment of silence in which the characters (and audience) catch their breath. This also allows them to add one back story detail per person, in an attempt to stir up some emotional connection. But it doesn't really matter once the violent mayhem kicks into gear again.

On board the International Space Station, a group of astronauts and scientists are risking their lives in order to study various outer worldly scenarios. When the team are sent a pod by an exploration vessel based on a planet Mars, the delivery process is risky but the skilled engineers manage to intercept the pod with little issue.

As the team re-group and begin to investigate the findings of the mission, not one of the crew members expects what has been delivered to them. The team of six unbelievably find that the Mars rover has found a form of life. A primitive large single cell; without expecting to, the team appear to have just proven that life on other planets is possible and they're the first ones to see exactly what it is.

Lead by a British scientist, the team quarantine the sample and begin to culture and nurture it in a bid to discover what the cell is part of. Everyone on the Space Station is overwhelmed and equally intrigued by the discovery and the secrets it holds but as they soon realise, the lifeform is far more dangerous than any of them could ever comprehended and it soon wishes to take over its new host.

Jake Gyllenhaal has opened up about where he stands on the upcoming US presidental election, and it seems he is one of many who believe that the election of Donald Trump could be extremely 'dangerous' for the nation. Demolition Review

Extraordinary

With its darkly emotive themes and brittle humour, this well-made drama by Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club) isn't quite what it appears to be. It's not, for example, an exploration of grief, although that's in here. And it also isn't meant to be taken literally, because it's more of a parable. The main clue is in the moment when the central character comments that everything in his life seems to be a metaphor. Indeed it is. And this heightened sense of meaning makes the entire film unusually vivid.

The film opens as Wall Street banker Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) emerges unscratched from a car crash that kills his beautiful wife Julia (Heather Lind). Unable to grieve, he begins to feel like the world around him is shifting inexplicably. So he starts taking things apart to see how they work, or why they don't. Soon he's dismantling his entire house. His father-in-law Phil (Chris Cooper), who is also his boss, becomes increasingly perplexed at Davis' erratic behaviour. And the only person Davis confides in is customer services rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and her confused 15-year-old son Chris (Judah Lewis). As Davis worms his way into their world, he slowly begins to see his own life more clearly.

This is a film about how some people let themselves drift along in the expected ways, never questioning what happens even though it doesn't feel quite right. In Davis' case, his wife's death jolts him awake. He begins to see the real world around him for the first time, including the absurdities of the life he had built around himself. Gyllenhaal invests Davis with remarkable layers of emotion as a generally cheerful guy being pulled apart from within by something he initially can't understand. His reactions to people around him grow increasingly more honest as the film progresses. And by the end, he's defying expectations and conventions in ways that feel shocking but are actually bracingly truthful.

Demolition Was A New Challenge For Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal looked forward to working with costar Naomi Watts and director Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club), mainly because the filmmaker is notable for encouraging his cast members to improvise. But Gyllenaal says he was taken aback when Vallee told him not to prepare for the role. "Weeks before, I was like, 'When are we going to rehearse it?'" Gyllenhaal says. "And he was like, 'No, we can talk about it on set.' He really pushed me out of my comfort zone, this technique and this style that I've developed over a long period of time. I showed up pretty scared the first day, because I hadn't done any preparation. But it wasn't manipulation, because he was always with me."

And Gyllenhaal really enjoyed Vallee's stripped-back stye of filmmaking. "I had heard and read about his process," he says, "and how he films his movies and how he treats his actors and just his whole way of circumventing the Hollywood vanity style of filmmaking. I loved it! When I got to set, there was no makeup, there was no lighting. It's just that instinct."

'Demolition' Reviews: Jake Gyllenhaal's Latest Movie Taken Apart By Critics

Jake Gyllenhaal

It can't be denied that Jake Gyllenhaal is a superb actor with a versatile talent that allows him to play virtually any character out there. However, that doesn't seem to have been enough to save his latest flick 'Demolition', which has left most critics deeply unimpressed.

Jake Gyllenhaal in DemolitionJake Gyllenhaal stars in Demolition

Gyllenhaal is making some questionable choices when it comes to cinema these days. Two other films from 2015 that he starred in, 'Southpaw' and 'Accidental Love', were equally unengaging as his latest endeavour, but he's got a lot in the pipeline so we're not losing hope yet. At least, we're trying not to. His latest film, about a businessman who becomes emotionally sparse after the death of his wife and sets out to take various objects apart and destroy his home, has been branded as 'all metaphor and no movie' by NJ.com, with Indiewire adding it's 'a frivolous lark, riddled with manufactured breakthroughs'.

Jimmy Fallon And Jake Gyllenhaal Bond In Gross Food Fight

Jimmy Fallon Jake Gyllenhaal

Jimmy Fallon presents probably his most childish 'Tonight Show' skit ever with 'Southpaw' star Jake Gyllenhaal, and it's utterly disgusting. They're spraying each other with mouthfuls of food and beverages, and it just gets more and more nauseating by the minute. And yet, for some reason, it's hilarious.

There's nothing funny about being sprayed in the faced with Powerade, coffee, apple or pie in reality, but when Jimmy Fallon and Jake Gyllenhaal did it to each other dressed as cops in their fake cop show 'Point Pleasant Police Department' on 'The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon' yesterday (March 21st 2016), nobody could stop laughing.

Oscar Nominations Court Controversy

The reaction to this week's Oscar nominations was a loud one, because Academy voters played it so safe in a year when films expanded to explore a diverse array of themes. Throughout 2014, actors and filmmakers bravely took on big challenges, and many were recognised with nominations. But critics have been quick to point out that all of the acting and directing nominees are white, and #OscarsSoWhite was the trending hashtag on Twitter.

The most obvious snub was for Selma, which only received nods for Best Picture and Best Song (for Common and John Legend's 'Glory'), leaving out the acclaimed actor David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay, who would have been the first African-American woman ever nominated for Best Director.

Nightcrawler - Featurette

Jake Gyllenhaal discusses the great lengths he went through to prepare for his role in the film 'Nightcrawler'. In the movie, Gyllenhaal portrays an insomniac new reporter, who creeps around recording crimes and the aftermaths thereof, selling the footage to local news networks for a living. He traverses the LA streets at night, keeping an eager eye out for the frequently occuring violent crimes that swamp the darkness, and finds himself first on the scene with his camera for a series of serious incidents. It soon becomes clear that the the bloodier the crime he stumbles upon, the higher his pay rate is when he sells those first shots for the news; but that kind of exposure begins to seriously damage his mental health and general sense of morality. He decides to go for a job as a television newscaster, feeling thoroughly confident of his hard work over the years, and stands to live by his rather unnerving motto: 'If you want to win the lottery, you have to make the money to buy the ticket.'

Prisoners Review

Extraordinary

What makes this thriller extraordinary is its willingness to make us scratch our heads and ask questions as the tense, fable-like story patiently unfolds. This creates an almost unbearably involving vibe, from the slow-burn pacing to the unusual character detail. And all of this allows the cast members to dig deep inside their characters.

It starts as two families in rural Pennsylvania get together to celebrate Thanksgiving, then discover that their two young daughters are missing. Keller and Grace Dover (Jackman and Bello) and Franklin and Nancy Birch (Howard and Davis) search the neighbourhood frantically, then try to help local detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) with his investigation. He settles on an oddball (Dano) who seems unable to provide any information at all. With no evidence against him, he's released. But Keller can't bear to think of this man being free while the girls are missing, so he hatches his own plan to sort things out.

There's a lot of symbolism in this screenplay, as everyone reacts to the situation in his or her own way (clearly echoing the world's response to the War on Terror). But it's also a riveting personal story of the desperate need for justice and revenge. Jackman is terrific as the deeply religious man whose love of guns informs his decision-making. He impulsively reacts like Liam Neeson in Taken, charging to the rescue. By contrast, Gyllenhaal's Loki is more measured and observant, while Howard's Franklin struggles with his own moral decisions. The women are a completely different story, and equally provocative: Davis is feisty but helpless, while Bello crawls into her shell.

Why The Hugh Jackman & Jake Gyllenhaal's 'Prisoners' Is This Year's Must See Thriller

Hugh Jackman Jake Gyllenhaal Denis Villeneuve Paul Dano Terrence Howard

Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal star in Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, a film that might just be one of the best thrillers, if not one of the all-round best films, of the year. The film hits cinemas up and down the US this weekend (arriving in UK cinemas on 4 October) and whilst it may be lacking in the audience pull power of the latest superhero epic, it has all the substance a gritty thriller needs and promises to be one of the year's most thought-provoking watches.

Hugh Jackman Jake Gyllenhaal
Jackman (L) and Gyllenhaal (R) are being praised for their performances

Jackman stars as Keller Dover, who is put into a position no parent ever want to be in when his six-year-old daughter and her friend go missing at Thanksgiving. When Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) is called in to handle the case, he promises to bring back Keller's daughter, and when the creepy, RV-dwelling outsider Alex Jones (Paul Dano) is found near the scene, he immediately becomes the prime suspect. But with police unable to pin him for the crime he may have committed, he is released following a 48-hour hold, enraging Keller, who decided to take matters into his own hand. It is up to Loki to get to the bottom of the case before it's too late for the missing girls, and before Keller does something he might regret.

Critics Agree That 'Prisoners' Is A Stroke Of Excellence: Review Round-Up

Hugh Jackman Jake Gyllenhaal Paul Dano Denis Villeneuve

Prisoners is by no means your average crime thriller, and maybe that's why critics are swooning over the latest project form Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve (Incendies); a kidnapping-based movie that promises to leave viewers questioning their own morals as to how far they'd go to protect their child. Starring Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and the massively under-rated Paul Dano, the film has being widely praise since it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this month, with critics tipping their hats to the actors, director and everyone else involved for making one of the most memorable thrillers in years.

Hugh JackmanJake Gyllenhaal

The film is set in a rural American town and poses the question, 'how far would you go to protect your child?' When the unthinkable happens to Keller Dover (Jackman) when his 6-year-old daughter and her friend go missing, seemingly leaving no trail and no certain answers as to where they could be. There is one possibility as to where they could be though, and that's the dilapidated RV of neighbourhood creepy guy Alex Jones (Dano), which was seen only moments later in the same vicinity as where the two girls went missing. It's a test against time as Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) must get to the bottom of the crime before Dover gets to Jones and makes him pay for what he may have done.

Ben Affleck Is Guy’S Choice Awards’ ‘Guy Of The Year’

Ben Affleck Clint Eastwood Brad Pitt George Clooney Mickey Rourke Matt Damon Jennifer Aniston Jessica Alba Snoop Dogg Vince Vaughn Jimmy Kimmel Henry Cavill Burt Reynolds Jeff Bridges Jake Gyllenhaal Jennifer Garner

Ben Affleck was awarded with the Spike’s Tv ‘Guy of the Year Award’ on Saturday (aired last night). The ceremony took place in Culver City, California. Affleck was presented his antler shaped (nicknamed ‘mantler’) award by fellow Oscar winning actor and director, Clint Eastwood. This is one of many awards; Affleck has received this year including an Oscar for his film Argo.

The Awards were first held in 2007 and previous winners have included Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Mickey Rourke, Maek Wahlberg and Matt Damon. As you’d expect, the awards are hardly female friendly (there is an award named the ‘holy grail of hot’) yet many turned out for the event including Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Alba.

The awards are hardly on par with the Oscars or a Golden Globes – there was a category in 2012 for ‘Hottest Zo(o)e(y)’. The nominations for this particular award were somewhat limited. However, the award’s lack of prestige did not prevent Affleck celebrating backstage with Snoop Dogg, Vince Vaughn and Jimmy Kimmel.

Hard-Hitting Crime Drama 'Prisoners' Sees Hugh Jackman On Top Form [Trailer]

Hugh Jackman Jake Gyllenhaal Maria Bello Viola Davis Terrence Howard

The trailer for Denis Villeneuve's hard-hitting crime-drama Prisoners has rolled out online, showing Hugh Jackman in his first post-Les Miserables role, and a good one at that. The Australian plays Keller Dover, a regular guy from Boston whose life is turned upside down after his young daughters go missing.

Watch the Prisoners trailer:

Panic ensues as Keller and his wife (Maria Bello) scour the neighbourhood in search of their children, though the only clue is a banged up RV parked nearby. A young detective played by Jake Gyllenhaal gets the case and makes an arrest on an assuming man who is the driver of the vehicle, though with no solid evidence and no sign of the girls, he is forced to release the suspect. Keller subsequently takes matters into his own hands and kidnaps the suspect in a bid to extract information.

Though you've seen the plot - or something similar - a million times, Prisoners looks an entertaining piece of cinema about the horror of one of the worst situations a parent could possibly go through. Directed by BAFTA nominated Villeneuve and writer by Contraband scribe Aaron Guzikowski, Prisoners hits theaters in the U.S. on September 20, 2013 and in the UK on October 4, 2013. The supporting cast includes Viola Davis and Terrence Howard

She's embarrassed about all of the Harry drama, and is definitely looking for someone who is more down-to-earth and away from the Hollywood lifestyle. She thinks they are all cute and talented, and she loves their album." Watch out guys! Taylor Swift is coming for you, and she usually doesn't take no for an answer. The source added, "Their country vibe is great and she thinks it would be a good mix."

So, Swift has put her next breakup song into motion, but who are The Lumineers and which member will feature heavily in the lyrics of Taylor's next album? The folk-rock quartet from Denver, Colorado, consists of Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites, Stelth Ulvang and Ben Wahamaki and female member Neyla Pekarek. Wesley and Jeremiah both have girlfriends, but Stelth and Ben may be available.

Lance Armstrong Movie: 10 Actors Who Could Play The Disgraced Cyclist (Pictures)

Lance Armstrong Jake Gyllenhaal Brad Pitt Sam Worthington Guy Pearce Matt Damon Michael Fassbender Aaron Eckhart Max Martini Joseph Gordon-Levitt

As was widely expected, a movie about disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong is set to go into production after Bad Robot partners JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk snapped up the rights to Juliet Macur’s forthcoming book Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong, reports Deadline.com. Macur – a sports reporter for The New York Times – has covered Armstrong’s career for over a decade, through the cyclist’s Tour de France wins, his recovery from cancer and eventual doping revelations. The American had denied using performance enhancing drugs for years, though finally admitted to cheating during a much-publicized interview with Oprah Winfrey last week.

Sony Pictures has long had an Armstrong movie project in the works, though that movie was dropped when the cyclist’s fall from grace began. It was set to star Jake Gyllenhaal and would have told the ‘American hero’ narrative of Armstrong’s rollercoaster career. Of course, the story has changed dramatically and Abrams film will focus on a cheat who pays a high price for his lies. As movie writer Mike Fleming Jr reports, the whole thing is reminiscent of when Tom Cruise and Cameron Crowe made a deal with Phil Spector to tell the story of the producer’s life story, though the director went on record as saying the film “lacked a good third act.” That was obviously provided shortly afterwards when Spector was convicted of shooting the actress Lana Clarkson, but Universal, Crowe and Cruise never went forward with the project. It’s likely that JJ Abrams and his team will tackle the Armstrong project head on, but who could play the man himself? Who has the presence to portray such a complex character on-screen? Here’s 10 actors who we think could become Lance:

2013 Romance Rumours Begin: Katie Holmes And Jake Gyllenhaal Dating?

Katie Holmes Jake Gyllenhaal

Since her marriage with Tom Cruise broke down early last year, leading to a divorce in June, Katie Holmes hasn't really been linked with anyone else. She has, instead, been a devoted mother to her impeccably dressed daughter Suri, as well as trying to make it back into acting by appearing on Broadway in the recently closed show 'Dead Accounts'. With quite a bit of bad news surrounding her it's about time that she begins dating again. The first rumour is one about her and Jake Gyllenhaal, as the Sun reports.

"Josh [Jackson] has been the mastermind behind this romance," a source told the paper. "Katie says that they have tons in common and Jake has already been to see her in Dead Accounts, plus she has been over to his apartment in the West Village for dinner." Joshua Jackson is the star of Mighty Ducks, Holme's old colleague from Dawsons Creek and the pair have remained good friends. What the pair actually have in common remains unclear, and as yet there are no photos or substantiated reports of their being together, so that whole thing could be guff. However, Jake seems like a nice chap, and Katie could probably do with some companionship so we hope it's all true.

Gyllenhaal's dating past has been almost exclusively blondes, including Reese Witherspoon, Kirsten Dunst and recently Taylor Swift, so Holmes is a break from normality. However, given that all his past relationships ended, that could probably be a good thing.

Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' About Harry Styles (We Analyse The Lyrics!)

Taylor Swift Harry Styles John Mayer Jake Gyllenhaal One Direction

Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' was written about her current boyfriend Harry Styles, it has been confirmed by Hollywood Life.com. The song was originally thought to be about one of her exes John Mayer or Jake Gyllenhaal, but it turns out the One Direction heartthrob is actually the subject!

A source privy to the song-writing process said, "The song 'Trouble' is definitely about Harry. Taylor told Harry it's about him. She references flying around America following One Direction's tour in the song." After assessing the lyrics, it's certainly plausible that the song is about Harry, with one line "when you saw me dancing" possibly referring to when Swift danced in the audience to One Direction at the Kid's Choice Awards in March 2012. "Flew me to places I'd never been," could refer to when Styles allegedly paid for the country star to jet in and watch him in concert.

Other lines in the track appear to hint at someone other than Styles, for example, "A new notch in your belt is all I'll ever be, And now I see, now I see, now I see, He was long gone when he met me, And I realize the joke is on me, hey." It suggests acrimony, a split or a broken heart - something not associated with the couple's relationship. Not yet anyway.

Russell Crowe Turned Down Wolverine Role (But Recommended Hugh Jackman)

Hugh Jackman Russell Crowe Jake Gyllenhaal

Russell Crowe turned down Hugh Jackman's Wolverine part in the X-Men movies, though recommended the Australian star for the role. Crowe had just finished Gladiator and opted to work with Ron Howard on A Beautiful Mind - a film that scooped multiple Oscars including an acting nomination for Crowe.

In an interview with Australian radio station Triple M 104.9FM (via Yahoo), Jackman explained, "Bryan Singer asked Rusty to do Wolverine, and he said, 'Nah mate I've just done 'Gladiator', it's not for me but you should look at this guy..." Luckily, Crowe appeared to be right on the money with his endorsement, as Jackman's portrayal was a huge hit with movie fans. He's since appeared as the clawed mutant three times, with a second X-Men spin-off 'The Wolverine' due out in July 2012. Crowe and Jackman have been good friends for many years, and the X-Men star said, "He's a great guy in every way, I have so much time for him and to watch him work, everyone says he is a great actor, when you actually get to work with someone like that... He's that good when it matters, in that moment, in that close up tough moment, you just sit back and watch you know someone's got that confidence and is going to deliver. I learnt a lot from him."

2013 is likely to be a big year for both stars, with Jackman appearing in the forthcoming musical-drama Les Miserables (as is Crowe) as well as The Wolverine and thriller The Prisoner with Jake Gyllenhaal. Crowe is shooting the fantasy Winter's Tale, Superman flick Man of Steel and his Oscar tipped blockbuster Noah

End Of Watch Review

Excellent

A strong sense of camaraderie sets this edgy police thriller apart from the crowd. And it's also a change of direction for writer-director David Ayer, who has explored the dark side of police corruption in Training Day, Harsh Times and Street Kings. But this film focusses instead on two good-guy cops just trying to do their job and have happy private lives.

On the gritty streets of Los Angeles, officers Taylor and Zavala (Gyllenhaal and Pena) continually make important arrests, which really annoys their serious-minded colleague Van Hauser (Harbour) because they're usually joking around as well. But their captain (Grillo) is slowly starting to respect their work. Meanwhile, their loyal partnership in the streets spills over into their private lives, and they lend support to each other as Taylor falls in love with Janet (Kendrick) and Zavala's wife (Martinez) gives birth to their first child. On the other hand, a Mexican cartel boss has just put a price on their heads after they busted his operation.

Ayer shoots the film like a fly-on-the-wall doc, with hand-held cameras capturing each scene. Sometimes the shaky imagery is a bit distracting since it has nothing to do with the plot, but it encourages the cast to deliver offhanded, bristly performances that build our interest during the nicely meandering first half. Then things shift drastically as a major plot kicks into gear that involves what the cops call the three food groups: drugs, money and guns.

Katie Holmes In Subway Scandal!

Katie Holmes Tom Cruise Jake Gyllenhaal Anne Hathaway Jessica Alba Hugh Jackman Lindsay Lohan Bradley Cooper

Gossip websites reacted with shock today when Hollywood star Katie Holmes was spotted getting from A to B on the New York underground.

'What?!' I hear you cry over the din of several thousand jaws hitting the ground in horror. Yep, the one and only Katie Holmes from 'Dawson's Creek' was forced to go incognito as she braved the busy method of public transport in a plain cream sweater, blue jeans and sunglasses.

Okay, so it's not exactly breaking news, nor is it really a scandal. Though it does make one speculate about how much was left to Holmes following her spectacular divorce from movie legend Tom Cruise; using public transport either suggests she's broke and can't afford a chauffeur, or that she's becoming super eco-friendly. or that it's probably quicker to get around the city on a train than in a car on those busy streets. Either way, it's a great normalization of celebrities as she becomes the latest in a string of stars to take to the subway. Jake Gyllenhaal, Jay Z, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Hugh Jackman, Lindsay Lohan and Bradley Cooper have all been seen on the Non-Celebrity Express which kind of suggests that the underground locomotive is the new stretched limo.

Jake Gyllenhaal Would Consider Playing Christian Grey In '50 Shades Of Grey' Film

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal is the latest in a long line of actors who are being linked with roles in the much-anticipated film adaptation of the hugely popular book 50 Shades Of Grey. Unlike the likes of Emma Watson, however, who has distanced herself from any rumors that she is going to be involved, Gyllenhaal actually seems to be pretty keen to get involved.

Gyllenhaal was being interview by Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM Radio show and was asked if he'd be interested in playing the chief male lead role Christian Grey, to which he replied "Yeah, of course! I always want to work, man, of course." He hasn't been contacted for the part yet apparently - it seems that no one has at this point - but continued to add "That's super flattering. I mean, I have not heard that, but if that's true then that's a nice thing. It's always nice to be considered."

Other actors who have been rumored to be playing the role of Grey include Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy and Matt Bomer and all eyes are on the author of the books E.L James to reveal who she wants to be playing the main character; she has so far remained completely silent on the subject.

Gyllenhaal’s ‘End Of Watch’ Comes From Nowhere To Top Box Office

Jake Gyllenhaal Michael Pena Clint Eastwood David Ayer Jennifer Lawrence George Clooney

Jake Gyllenhaal’s ‘End of Watch’ came from nowhere to top the U.S box office, though it was another disappointing week for the movie industry. The Los Angeles cop tale – also starring Michael Pena debuted with $13.2 million to finish at No.1, according to the Associated Press.

Gyllenhaal’s latest movie had been neck-and-neck with Jennifer Lawrence’s horror film ‘House of the End of the Street’ and Clint Eastwood’s ‘Trouble With the Curve’, though powered ahead on Sunday. Eastwood’s recent appearance at the Republican National Convention probably did little to help the baseball flick’s chances – his speech was roundly mocked online, though the film also received lukewarm reviews, at best. The box office result is great news for Gyllenhaal, director David Ayer and Open Road Films, who made the police drama for just $7 million. It follows two Los Angeles Police Department officers who work in South Central L.A and was lauded by critics. The New York Times called it, “a muscular, maddening exploitation movie embellished with art-house style and anchored by solid performances.”

Despite End Of Watch’s success, the U.S. box office continues to slow dramatically. To put the latest figures into perspective – on the same weekend in 2010, George Clooney’s ‘The American’ also took $13 million, though it was only good enough for sixth place.

Video - Jake Gyllenhaal And Dakota Fanning Taking A Break From Filming 'Very Good Girls'

Jake Gyllenhaal ('Brokeback Mountain') and Dakota Fanning ('War of the Worlds') take a break and chat on the set of upcoming drama movie 'Very Good Girls'. Elizabeth Olsen ('Martha Marcy May Marlene') who also stars in the movie is mentioned by a photographer to be on the set as well but she doesn't appear in the clip.

The film is set in New York City and tells the story of two teenage girls who make a pact to lose their virginity after their first high school year. However, drama unfolds as the best friends fall for the same guy

Two loyal LA police officers Taylor and Zavala patrol the city's streets arresting drug dealers and gang members, protecting each other's backs and each other's families. The story is told through a series of amateur film footage apparently from police officers, criminals, civilians and surveillance cameras to provide a uniquely accurate depiction of the city's dangers and its cops.

Rendition Review

Good
About halfway through Gavin Hood's Rendition, Peter Sarsgaard's dweeby congressman's assistant approaches Meryl Streep's white witch of the CIA with enough huff-and-puff to blow down a Dairy Queen. The two ideological opposites go at it with crisp, cool reverie: He promises to send her a copy of the Constitution while she promises him that a copy of the 9/11 Report will be arrive in his mailbox posthaste. It's sloganeering at its finest and that's not the half of it.

CIA watchdog Corrine Whitman (Streep) sets up the titular protocol when evidence is uncovered against Chicago family man and chemical engineer Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally), Egyptian by birth. Whitman suspects that El-Ibrahimi had a hand in a recent bombing of an unnamed North African tea house; an attempt on the life of North African security head Fawal (Igal Naor). Fawal heads the "interrogation" with CIA analyst Douglas Freeman (Jake Gyllenhaal) there as counsel while they electrocute, drown, beat, and strangle Anwar to give up information on the attack.

Proof (2005) Review

Bad
The Broadway hit Proof put playwright David Auburn's name on the map, earned him a shelf full of prizes (from Tony to Pulitzer), and reminded those of us who stopped paying attention that Mary-Louise Parker was a star. A movie adaptation was inevitable, though a drastic mishandling of the material was not.

Familiarity with Auburn's stage presentation may breed contempt for this version, which feels distinctly off-kilter from its first frames. Mysteries that held water longer in the theater instead land like Doc Marten's on a flimsy piece of plywood here. Director John Madden samples a chatty, analytical approach to his literal translation but gets swept up in stagy, awkward, and all-too-deliberate line readings. Much like last year's ill-conceived Phantom of the Opera, this movie has few cinematic qualities that elevate it above a tedious and emotionless play rehearsal shot on location.

Donnie Darko Review

Very Good
Donnie Darko is a writer-director's debut that takes on schizophrenia, time travel, teenage angst, dysfunctional suburban family life, societal farce, and hallucinations of an evil bunny in a gorgeously filmed two-hour package deserves serious props. But Richard Kelly's fascinating film is seriously flawed in that it never brings all these disparate elements together in the end. Not to mention that it bears the worst title of the year.

Set in 1988, Donnie Darko is a John Hughes teen movie tinged with David Lynch-ian gloom and perversity. It begins innocently enough around the Darko's dining room table, where we find out the older sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is rebelliously voting for Dukakis and Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal, Bubble Boy) is off his meds. From here, the film churns forward at a hypnotic pace, revealing facts about its disturbed but endearing title character.

October Sky Review

Excellent

Although "October Sky" is a film with no surprises from its soundtrack of '50s rock 'n' roll standards to its triumph over adversity themes, this teen-years biography of a NASA scientist who got his start building rockets in his basement is so full of spirit and letter-perfect filmmaking that I defy anyone to watch this movie without getting a tingle in his or her heart.

Thrilling in the best sense of the word, traditional without being corny and with a script, photography and symbolism that could be the basis of a film literature textbook, "October Sky" is a classic in the making. It's just a pity it wasn't released in time for Oscar consideration.

The picture stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickman, a coal miner's son determined to break away from his assumed destiny following in his father's bleak and dangerous subterranean footsteps.

Bubble Boy Review

Good

Great casting is absolutely vital to a puckishly impudent comedy like "Bubble Boy" -- the story of a happy-go-lucky, immune-deficient geek who zip-locks himself into a homemade portable orb to travel cross-country and stop the wedding of the girl he loves.

Put somebody like Adam Sandler, David Spade or Seth Green in the title role, and this childlike weirdo with matted hair and a whiney voice would lose all his sweet qualities and quickly become intolerably abrasive.

But Jake Gyllenhaal, who made such a lasting impression as future NASA scientist Homer Hickman in the little-seen coming of age picture "October Sky" -- is absolutely brilliant in the role. His exaggerated wide-eyed naivete has just enough pepper to make you laugh with him, not at him. His hyperactive enthusiasm at taking his first steps into the world ("Dog poo! Aweeeesome!") is so real that you don't just laugh, you smile. He makes the character three-dimensional and 100-percent lovable, but in an ever-so-slightly ironic way that requires a ton of talent to maintain.

The Day After Tomorrow Review

OK

"The Day After Tomorrow" isn't quite the disaster of a disaster flick I thought it would be.

Don't get me wrong -- it's bad in a way only $150-million movies with awe-inspiring special effects can be bad. It's riddled with nonsensical pseudo-science, saddled with supposedly brainy characters (climatologists, high-school science whizzes) who nonetheless haven't a scrap of common sense, and stuffed with stock characters designed for the kind of instant sympathy (or instant comic relief) that doesn't require actually giving them a personality.

But for popcorn munching and smart-remarking during a bargain matinee, it's a bad movie worth the price of admission.
