This past summer saw the release of the hugely successful Marvel flick 'Guardians of the Galaxy,’ which grossed over $772 million worldwide, and although the plot isn’t connected to any of ‘The Avengers’ superheroes, many fans have wondered whether the two will ever collaborate.

Director James Gunn recently spoke about a possible affiliation between ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘The Avengers’ while being interview on a podcast session with Jeff Goldsmith, and explained where the ‘Guardians’ lie in the Marvel universe.

Gunn reiterated that ‘Guardians’ isn’t a prequel to the next instalment of ‘The Avengers,’ which will be split into two instalments ‘Avengers: Infinity War Part I’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War Part II.’

“The last thing I said was something about how the Guardians, we really are mostly focused on creating the Guardians as their own separate universe, creating the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. It isn't all about leading towards Avengers," he said.

"We're not subservient to The Avengers," he continued. "Whether or not at some point, some Guardians and some Avengers meet up and meet somewhere in the world, whether it's two years from now, three years from now, four years from now, fifteen years from now...I'm not going to say. But Guardians of the Galaxy does not exist as a prequel to Avengers 3 and 4. They have their own thing that they're involved in. They have their own mythos that they're involved in. They have their own mythos that they're involved in. They have their own stories that are equally important."

‘Guardians of the Galaxy, which features an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper,’ was released on August 1st 2014 and is widely considered one of the best Marvel films.
