Marvel fans: prepare to get very excited. Those who have no idea what Guardians of the Galaxy is and why they should be very excited: listen up. After what feels like years since we first heard that Marvel were adapting the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series, we have our first real insight into what James Gunn's summer 2014 movie.

Director James Gunn Gets Fans Excited.

The director tweeted the first image from the upcoming action blockbuster on the 31st December. The intriguing on set snap shows what looks like a police line-up with Zoe Saldana's Gamora, Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Bradley Cooper's Rocket Raccoon, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, and Vin Diesel's Groot.

Though Cooper and Diesel's roles will only feature the voices of the two actors, the photo shows the sophistication of Marvel and Disney's CGI work in the upcoming movie.

Put simply, the Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of superheroes that were first brought together in a 1969 comic book and reinvigorated in a 2008 line-up. With obvious comparisons to Marvel's The Avengers, fans have been left wondering whether there'll be even more crossover potential.

Indeed, GotG has managed to assemble an equally enviable cast with Doctor Who's Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Benicio Del Toro and Glenn Close also set to star in the film, which will be released in August this year.

Hear Karen Gillan talking about her blockbuster villainess role.

Marvel have also released a tantalising synopsis for the movie, which will give you plenty to chew on until the next teaser. In a nutshell, Pratt's Peter Quill gets stranded in space and unites a team of unlikely ex-con aliens in order to mount a defence against cosmic threats.

The company's synopsis reads: "From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team - the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.

"To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits-Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer.

"But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy's fate in the balance." (Via Digital Spy).

Zoe Saldana
Could Zoe Saldana's Gamora Bring Links To Thanos?

In the comics, Gamora, AKA "The most dangerous woman in the galaxy," is the adoptive daughter of cosmic madman Thanos, who was teased at the end of The Avengers. Not only that but Drax The Destroyer's origins is fairly heavily entwined with Thanos'. Whether or not this will bring potential for crossover or a separate involvement of Thanos in both The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy is unclear.

However, producer Kevin Feige has tormented fans with Thanos talk, telling Empire Magazine that "Ronan the Accuser is very much the main bad guy. Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in Guardians, for sure. Certainly you'll get more than the one turn around and smirk! You'll get much more than that!" This could also indicate that there is still at least one major casting announcement to be made with the movie's release just seven months away.

Guardians of the Galaxy has finished shooting and is in its final post-production stages ready for released on the 1st August 2014.
