Memorial Weekend hasn’t just frustrated Game of Thrones fans, it also saw X-Men: Days of Future Past storm the box office with a global total of $261m – a new record for the franchise internationally. Despite that, though, it looks as though Wolverine et al aren’t even in the top ten when it comes to first weekends.

In fact, it comes in 16th, just ahead of The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King, which grabbed $250m on its first weekend out in the open, and just behind Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – a $272m debut for Paramount. All these numbers are from the excellent Box Office Mojo.

Also in front of the latest instalment in the X-Men movie franchise are three Twilight films: New Moon and Breaking Dawn parts 1 and 2, with the latter proving the most financially successful on opening weekend, accumulating a whooping $340m back in 2012.

Fellow Marvel super heroes also usurp DOFP. Iron Man 3, Spider-Man 3 and The Avengers are 6th, 5th and 3rd respectively. The Avengers managed $392.5m on opening weekend, making it the biggest super hero debut ever. And that record is expected to be blown out of the water by Age of Ultron when it hits cinemas next year.

But it’s that darn wizard dominating things on a global scale for opening weekend. The Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 – the final film in the 8-strong movie series – are top of the pile. Half-Blood is only a touch ahead of The Avengers on $394m, but it’s the finale that really hit the ground running with a massive $483m to take the crown by around $90m.

Of course, this ‘Memorial Weekend’ isn’t quite over – we still have tonight’s totals to take into consideration, but we don’t expect X-Men to make too much headway up that list.
