Actor James Rebhorn, best known for playing Carrie Mathison's father on 'Homeland,' has died aged 65. Rebhorn was diagnosed with melanoma in 1992 though continued to work until last month.

His agent Dianne Busch told the Hollywood Reporter that Rebhorn died at his home in South Orange, New Jersey. 

"He fought it all this time," said Busch, "He died [on] Friday afternoon at his home in New Jersey, where he had been receiving hospice care for a week and a half."

With 100 screen credits, Rebhorn was amongst the hardest working actors in the business. He starred in the Oscar winning movie Scent of a Woman, as well as The Talented Mr Ripley, Meet the Parents, Carlito's Way, My Cousin Vinny, Basic Instinct and The Game. He often played authority figures, including the US secretary of defence in the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. 

Tributes have been pouring in for the prolific actor.

Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander tweeted, "RIP James Rebhorn, a lovely man and a terrific actor."

Director Roland Emmerich, who worked with Rebhorn on Independence Day, said: "It's a sad day. I just learned James Rebhorn passed. Such a great talent and always a joy to work with. RIP."

Donnie Darko writer Richard Kelly tweeted, "I loved working with the great James Rebhorn on The Box. He was one of our most reliable and underrated character actors. RIP."

Actress Frances Fisher wrote, "Shocked and saddened to hear of James Rebhorn's passing. Jim was a consummate actor with whom I had the pleasure to work when we were young."

James Rebhorn is survived by his wife Rebecca Lin and two daughters.
