MPTF's Night Before The Oscars Pulling Out Of Partnership With Beverly Hills Hotel

In recent years, besides the glamour, celebrities and red carpet fashion at the Oscars, the show’s ethics have also been put into the spotlight. This year, The Night Before The Oscars, the biggest charity event related to the ceremony, has pulled out of the Beverly Hills Hotel because the venue is owned by the Sultan of Brunei. The event is being held by the Motion Picture And Television Fund, and the decision to stop collaborating with the hotel comes directly from the organization. The charity event does not want to appear to support or endorse the Sultan’s recently instated anti-LGBT penal code, based on Sharia law.

Supporters of the event include Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Officials from MPTF, have met with executives from both the hotel and the Dorchester Collection, owner of the Beverly Hills Hotel, to inform them of the decision, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Night Before party, which draws Hollywood’s biggest stars and every top executive in town, has been held at the Beverly Hills Hotel since its inauguration in 2003. It was originally started by Dreamworks’ CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and has since raised over $60 million since its beginning. The party is regularly attended and supported by A-list talent – the 2013 committee, for example, included Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Camila and Matthew Mcconaughey, Jamie Foxx, Sandra Bullock and Octavia Spencer.

Superhero movies have been striving towards the almost unobtainable goal set by The Dark Knight trilogy when it redefined the genre. Marc Webb

"I'd like to be involved as a consultant", Webb explained, adding "I've already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will close out my tenure. First "Annie" Trailer, Starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Makes Its Way Online

Quvenzhane Wallis Jamie Foxx Cameron Diaz Will Gluck

Calling all musical theater fans. Not only is the Annie movie officially coming to a screen near you soon, there’s also a trailer and everything. Just a heads up: there are two kinds of people – those who get emotional during Annie and those, who don’t have hearts. With that said, let Quvenzhane Wallis melt your heart in just the short time of the trailer.

Watch it below.

A thirty-second teaser trailer and preliminary movie poster were released Wednesday, showing Wallis in the title role, as well as Jamie Foxx as Daddy Warbucks and Cameron Diaz as the villainous Mrs Hannigan. The new clip, released by Entertainment Tonight, looks ever so slightly campy, what with Cameron Diaz’s strangely accented line “You think you’re better than me?” and the iconic Tomorrow, sung by Wallis, dramatically playing in the background. It doesn’t look like the problem is with any of the actors though – Annie was just never meant to be condensed into a trailer.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will web-sling it's way on to cinema screens on 2 May (18 April in the UK) in 2014 and as the release date of the much-anticipated sequel to the reboot of the comic book spin off draws nearer, Sony have thought of a novel way to combine New Years Eve with a promotional push for the movie.

New 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Trailer Looks Awesome, But How Will It Do Against 'The Winter Soldier?'

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Jamie Foxx Paul Giamatti Martin Sheen Sally Field

There’s one big piece of news on the entertainment circuit that you should be paying attention to: how cool is the new Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer. According to popular opinion, it is with stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone that the franchise has really found its footing and this second film from Garfield’s trilogy looks pretty much amazing, judging from the trailer, released yesterday.

Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Spider-Man 2 Still
The special effects look particularly gorgeous.

We already know that the masked superhero will be taking on a trio of The Green Goblin (Chris Cooper) The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Electro (Jamie Foxx,) the latter of whom has a particularly cool scene in the trailer, as he goes after Spider-Man with whips of static electricity. Not to mention that his one line in the trailer is said with enough power to convert any non-believers in Foxx’s aptitude for the role. The point of the trailer is fairly obvious: Electro is coming and the lights are going out. In fact, that could make for some sneaky real-world parallels and maybe a power/electricity analogy here and there, which Marvel have obviously caught on to.

Next Stop, Oscars? Jamie Foxx To Play Martin Luther King In Oliver Stone Biopic

Oliver Stone Jamie Foxx Paul Greengrass

Jamie Foxx, the actor who won the Academy Award for best actor for his portrayal of Ray Charles, will take on another of America's heroic figures when he plays Martin Luther King in Oliver Stone's green-lit biopic.

Reports in the U.S. suggest that DreamWorks is moving forward with the movie, which already has the backing of King's family as well as the rights to his copyrighted speeches, including I Have A Dream.

One slight problem is that Paul Greengrass - currently busy promoting his Oscar hope Captain Phillips - has been developing his Martin Luther King movie Memphis for years. The flick, about the great man's final days, started out at Universal before the director clashed with the studio over the big-budget flop Green Zone.

White House Down Review

Very Good

This may look exactly like Gerard Butler's over-serious Olympus Has Fallen, but it's actually that film's smarter, sillier younger brother: the one you like even though you really shouldn't. As he did with 2012, filmmaker Emmerich has injected this huge action romp with a generous dose of tongue-in-cheek humour while never sacrificing the overwrought spectacle. So even if it's wildly contrived and ludicrously patriotic, it's so gleefully destructive that we can't help but have a lot of fun.

It starts out as ex-military man John (Tatum) tries to impress his estranged 11-year-old daughter Emily (King) by taking her along with him on a job interview at the White House. At that moment, home-grown terrorists strike, led by a disgruntled security chief (Woods). In the chaos, John gets separated from Emily, and as he looks for her he stumbles across the US President (Foxx). As John and the President work to subvert the villains, the politically savvy Emily is posting videos of them on YouTube, which helps the Pentagon command centre, overseen by security chief Carol (Gyllenhaal) and Speaker Raphelson (Jenkins), keep the nation from falling apart. But it turns out that one of the baddies (Clarke) has a personal vendetta against John.

As always, Emmerich infuses the film with a sombre tone then undermines it at every step with witty irony. Each scene is packed with quirky characters, snappy one-liners, knowingly corny sentimentality and bigger-than-necessary mayhem. For example, he manages to wedge a full-on car chase into the White House grounds, complete with a rocket launcher. At the centre, Tatum and Foxx are a lively double-act, bouncing off each other with feisty energy. Furrowed-brow gravitas is supplied by Gyllenhaal, Jenkins and Woods, while scene-stealers include King's plucky young hero and Simpson's megalomaniac hacker.

Military Personnel And Veterans Get Free Tickets To 'White House Down'

Channing Tatum Roland Emmerich Jamie Foxx

Military veterans and active personnel were granted free access to Roland Emmerich's new movie White House Down on July 4, 2013. In a nice touch from Sony Pictures Entertainment and the four largest U.S. cinema chains - which doubled as a savvy way to push WHD on the patriotic holiday - servicemen and woman flocked to the cinemas with their plus-ones to catch the new film starring Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum.

Theaters run by Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc, Cinemark Holdings Inc and Carmike Cinemas Inc were all in on the scheme, which proved hugely popular. "It's a great way to celebrate the holiday and to honor and thank the troops for their service to our country," Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures' president of worldwide distribution, said in the most American sounding statement ever.

White House Down stars Tatum as a police officer down on his luck after his Secret Service application is turned down. However, in an ironic turn, he ends up protecting the President (Foxx) when a paramilitary group attacks the famous residence while he and his daughter are on a tour.

'Monsters University' Stands Up To 'The Heat' And 'White House Down' In Weekend Box Office

Sandra Bullock Melissa McCarthy Roland Emmerich Channing Tatum Jamie Foxx

The latest venture from Pixar animations, Monsters University, spent a second week at the number one spot at the US box office, battling off competition from newcomers The Heat and White House Down. The prequel to 2001's Monsters Inc. managed to take in an impressive $46.2 million, just under half of it's taking from last week, and has currently made a massive $171 million in it's two weeks at cinemas.

Close behind in second place was the Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy-starring buddy cop movie The Heat, which scooped an impressive $40 million over the weekend. Costing $43 million to make, the movie has all but recouped it's expenditure in a relatively successful weekend, whereas fellow newcomer White House Down only managed to bring in $25.7 million to land it in fourth place, behind the Brad Pitt starring World War Z. The takings for the Roland Emmerich-directed film will be particularly distressing to Sony Pictures, who spent an estimated $150 million on making the Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx-starring film.

How Much Will Reviews Hamper White House Down's Weekend Box Office Performance?

Roland Emmerich Channing Tatum Jamie Foxx

The US government is under attack once again from director Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla, Independence Day, 2012), in his new film, and with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx starring and a need to reiterate the credentials of traditional action movies rather that superhero films, the film still has a good chance to be the surprise hit of the summer. Critics are split down the middle in their opinion of the film, with some saying it is a decent enough watch, whilst others are calling it a shocker.

Watch the trailer for White House Down

A great deal of reviews are speaking well of the latest film from one of the most successful disaster movie makers of the last few decades, with Vulture and the New York Times praising the shameless action sequences that regularly fail to keep the average audience-member entertained. Others have been praising the premise of the film - about a paramilitary group who take over the White House - for successfully addressing America's post-9/11 anxieties of a genuine threat to mainland America, much like the Gerard Butler-starring Olympus Has Fallen. But not everyone can agree and overall the critical view has been somewhat subdued; giving the film a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This can go a long way towards how well a film does in the cinemas and may prove to be a genuine threat to the producer's investment.

Did Jamie Foxx Just Confirm A Django Unchained Sequel?

Jamie Foxx Quentin Tarantino Christoph Waltz

Django Unchained has sort of taken everyone by surprise. Sure, movie fans were expecting something pretty decent from Tarantino, armed with a cast including Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, but critics are unanimous in their praise for the film which briefly held a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Producer Harvey Weinstein had floated the idea of splitting Django into two movies, though Tarantino insisted that cinemagoers must follow the story through to the end, in one go. Though rumors of a sequel have been bubbling away for a couple of weeks now, Jamie Foxx is the first cast-member to speak enthusiastically about a second movie. During an interview with Vanity Fair, the Oscar winner spoke in detail about the prospect of furthering Django's story, saying, "I would definitely be interested to see where Django and his wife go. Or just other adventures. There's stories of John Brown, the abolitionist-maybe he runs into John Brown or Harriet Tubman. But he's definitely on the run up in the North, and down South there's "Wanted" posters, but no one really knows what Django looks like," he added, "They only saw him for a second. So there could be a poster and it could look like Don Cheadle or something. You know what I'm saying?" Hmm, seems as though his ideas are pretty vivid - perhaps he's been speaking with Tarantino?

Django Unchained hits theaters in the U.S. on Christmas Day, for all who movie buffs who fancy a generous helping of blood, gore and violence to go with your turkey.

"Lord Jesus Stop This Horse!" Jamie Foxx On His Django Unchained Stunt Fear

Jamie Foxx Quentin Tarantino Little Richard

A little known fact about the latest Quentin Tarantino blockbuster: Jamie Foxx actually rides his own horse, Cheetah, in the movie, Hollywood.com reports. You might think that doing his own stunts was a piece of cake, given that he was used to riding his own steed but that wasn’t the case for the Ray star, as he was forced to ride Cheetah without a saddle - not something he was used to, at all!

“The only thing that was scary was riding bareback on the horse because the horse was used to the stunt person,” says Foxx. “They built this dirt track and I got on the back of the horse and there were people at the end with their sleeves rolled up ready to catch me (in case he fell off). But the horse turns, sees the truck with the camera on it and since he's used to the stuntperson, he goes 28 miles an hour and I'm on the back. On the outside I look like Django but on the inside I was like Little Richard screaming, 'Lord Jesus please stop this horse!”

As if that wasn’t bad enough, director Tarantino decided that one take simply wasn’t enough and asked Foxx to go through the daring stunt scene one more time. “This time the horse takes off again, only this time I'm on the side of the horse and the stunt guy Dash says, 'If you feel like you're gonna come off the horse, just let go of the son of a b**ch, just get off.' Those words are ringing in my head as I'm hanging off the side going 28 miles an hour thinking he's a damn fool!" It may be of some comfort to Jamie to know that it turned out to be one of Quentin’s favourite scenes.

A mixed week for US albums releases; old classics given an airing, a major movie soundtrack launched and hip-hop arTIsts new and old having a stab at chart success. Currently, the top of the US album chart is dominated by Taylor Swift, who’s back at the top with Red, Wiz Khalifa, riding high at number two with O.N.F.C. and Rod Stewart’s festive compilation album, Merry Christmas, Baby.

Eric Clapton’s Slowhand gets a 35th anniversary reissue, having been remastered from the original “1/4 tape. There are four album session outtakes, entitled ‘Looking at the Rain,’ ‘Alberta,’ ‘Greyhound Bus,’ and ‘Stars, Strays and Ashtrays.’ A second disc contains a live performance at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, from April 27, 1977.

One for the completists, then – and more a case of Clapton’s record label rubbing their hands in glee at a cash in, than any real significant moment in his career. The re-release of Slowhand has hardly set the music press alight and we probably don’t need to fetch any fire blankets for the albums chart, either.

Weinstein Co. Cancel Django Unchained Premiere In Wake Of Connecticut Massacre

Jamie Foxx Leonardo Dicaprio Tom Cruise

The Weinstein Company have cancelled the red carpet premiere of Django Unchained, in the wake of the recent school massacre in Newtown, Connectict. A premiere for the movie, which stars Jamie Foxx and Leonardo Dicaprio, was planned to take place in Los Angeles. According to Deadline.com though, the high profile press event has been downscaled.

A screening of the movie will still take place, as planned, but only for stars of the film and their friends and family, who have not been able to see the movie yet. Meanwhile, press will be invited to attend a different screening, instead. A spokesperson for The Weinstein Company insisted that the content of the film was not at the root of the decision to cancel the red carpet event, but rather that nobody feels like celebrating in the wake of such a huge tragedy.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the tragedy in Newtown, CT, and in this time of national mourning we have decided to forgo our scheduled event,” said the spokesperson. “However, we will be holding a private screening for the cast and crew and their friends and families.” Similarly, an event organized to launch the New York premiere of Tom Cruise’s new movie Jack Reacher has also been cancelled, the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced.

Jamie Foxx Refuses To Name His Children's Mothers

Singer-turned-actor Jamie Foxx had refused to name the mothers of his two daughters, as he wants to keep his personal life out of the news. The star has been private since the children were born. Corinne (18) and Annalise (4) have had their mother's identity kept since they were born. Despite this, Foxx has insisted that there is nothing stopping the women from coming forward, yet he is still glad that they haven't for complications sake. He explained this to Oprah Winfrey, saying "It's just so cool and calm and that's all you need... [I] need somebody... who's not thirsty for what I do."

The star of the upcoming 'Django Unchained' has also suggested that he will not pursue a romantic relationship with anyone that cannot keep themselves out of the press. Foxx explained his motto, "Whoever you date, don't let anybody know", by saying "I was dating a girl one time and I'm sick and there was a premiere and she got her dress and she was like, 'Well, the premiere's tonight... what are we doing? Because I got this dress.' And I said, 'Ok, well you go ahead and go to the premiere and don't come back,' because it ain't (sic) about that. To me, in order to make it in this business, it has to be someone who is willing to sacrifice a little bit more than what they would sacrifice in a normal relationship." He went on to discuss his reluctance to get married, saying "I always wanted to be married, 2.5 kids, wood panelling on the side of the station wagon, but... you get your heart broken one good time, especially for a man, it's catastrophic."

Quentin Tarantino On Newton School Massacre: "Tragedies Happen"

Quentin Tarantino Jamie Foxx Kerry Washington Leonardo Dicaprio Tom Cruise

Movie director Quentin Tarantino has defended violence in movies following Friday's school shootings in Newton, Connecticut, which left 26 dead. The Django Unchained director said he was tired of defending his films each time the U.S. is shaken by gun violence, saying, "tragedies happen," reports BBC News.

His lead actor Jamie Foxx said big screen violence can certainly influence people, telling press at a junket in New York, "We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence. It does." Django Unchained follows the story of a slave living in the Deep South, who sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner, played by Leonardo Dicaprio. Kerry Washington - who plays Foxx's on-screen wife - said, "I do think that it's important when we have the opportunity to talk about violence and not just kind of have it as entertainment, but connect it to the wrongs, the injustices, the social ills." 20 children and six women died in the assault on Sandy Hook school by a lone gunman - thought to be Adam Lanza, 20 - last week. He shot dead his mother before driving to the school in her car.

Premieres for Tom Cruise's new violent action flick Jack Reacher were cancelled in light of the events in Newton, while the Fox network cancelled forthcoming episodes of Family Guy and American Dad.

Newtown Shooting Reaction: Jamie Foxx, Quentin Tarantino On Violence And The Film Industry

Jamie Foxx Quentin Tarantino Kerry Washington

Well, it was about time. The school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that occurred on Friday and, as the nation mourns the victims, the debates about violence in the media are just beginning.

The latest person to comment on this is actor Jamie Foxx, who, a bit ironically, stars in Django UnchainedQuentin Tarantino’s upcoming flick about slavery, which will feature quite a lot of explicit and violent scenes. While promoting the film on Saturday, the star braved the difficult topic, saying that Hollywood can no longer ignore the fact that on-screen violence influences people on some level.

"We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence. It does," Fox said in an interview. Meanwhile, director Quentin Tarantino, who is known for his extremely violent and gory scenes, which are all part of his signature style, is once again struggling to defend his artistic freedom. Tarantino went on a bit of a tangent, explaining that he was tired of defending his films each time the nation was shocked by gun violence. He stated that “tragedies happen” and that blame should fall on those guilty of the crimes.

"It's Always Racial": Jamie Foxx Discusses Django Unchained

Jamie Foxx Kerry Washington

In a recent interview about forthcoming film Django Unchained, actor Jamie Foxx has admitted that “it’s always racial” as a black person. The quote comes in reference to the fact that some of the black community have criticized Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti western for not taking issues of slavery seriously enough in the film.

Foxx plays leading character Django, a man set free from slavery in order to work as a bounty hunter, as part of a deal that sees his buyer agree to help him find his lost wife; he told Vibe Magazine “as black folks we're always sensitive. As a black person it's always racial.” He added “I come into this place to do a photo shoot and they got Ritz crackers and cheese. I'll be like, ain't this a b*tch. Y'all didn't know black people was coming. What's with all this white sh*t? By the same token, if there is fried chicken and watermelon I'll say ain't this a b*tch? So, no matter what we do as black people it's always gonna be that. Every single thing in my life is built around race.”

Foxx was joined by Kerry Washington for the interview, and she said that, whilst it was clear to point out that it was a film, a work of fiction, there was no denying that they’d tried to treat slavery with as much truth as possible. “I remember there was this one moment in the script where Jamie's character was put in an awful crazy medieval metal mask” she commented. “I said, ‘That's some sick thing Quentin thought up.' And when I went to the production office to meet about my wardrobe, I saw into the research office. Twenty photos of real masks like that. It made me sad.”

It's Official! Jamie Foxx To Play Electro In The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Jamie Foxx

Exciting news for those looking forward to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie – Jamie Foxx is going to be in it! In news first reported by Columbia and then confirmed by the man himself, Foxx is going to be playing the character Electro in the second film of the Mark Webb reboot starring Andrew Garfield as Spidey.

"Electro is a great character," Jamie told Entertainment Tonight's Nancy O'Dell as he revealed the role. “I met with the director, Mark Webb, I met with Andrew Garfield, and we talked. ... I think Electro will be an exciting character to play because he's a ... genius electrician-type person, and he gets the short end of the stick from the whole world, and the next thing you know he turns it on."

The official Marvel site describes the character a little more elegantly. Here’s how he came about: “after being convinced by his mother that he was not smart enough to pursue such a career, Max [Dillon, the character’s real name] instead reluctantly took a job as a lineman for an electric company. While repairing a power line still connected to its spool, Max was struck by lightning. Instead of being killed, the freak accident caused a mutagenic change in his nervous system, allowing him to generate and control vast amounts of electricity. After creating a colorful costume, Max turned to a life of crime as Electro.” Sounds good! It was also revealed yesterday that Dane DeHaan would be joining the cast as Harry Osborn.

Eddie Murphy Honoured By Fellow Stars For Spike TV

Eddie Murphy Jamie Foxx Russell Brand Adam Sandler Chris Rock Stevie Wonder Arsenio Hall Judge Reinhold

Eddie Murphy was honoured by his peers for his outstanding contribution to film, TV, music and stand-up over his 30 + year career.

Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx, Adam Sandler, and Russell Brand were just some of the famous faces at the Beverley Hills gala being aired on Spike later this month (it airs Nov. 14 at 10 p.m. on Spike). Murphy's friends and co-stars had nothing but praise for Murphy, with his appearances on such comedy classics as Coming To America and The Beverley Hills Cop being recalled by co-stars Arsenio Hall and Judge Reinhold. Jeffrey Katzenberg of Dreamworks Animation also gave his heart to Murphy's Donkey character from the Shrek films, whilst his Life co-star, Martin Lawrence, told him from onstage, “You’ve got a friend for life."

There were also video highlights from the funny man's seminal stand-up performances from the 80's, Raw and Delirious, although despite much attempted persuasion Murphy declined to get back on stage and perform stand up again.

Is Jamie Foxx Lined Up To Play Electro In Next Spiderman Film?

Jamie Foxx Marc Webb Spider Man

Jamie Foxx could soon be sending shockwaves to audiences after it has emerged that he is to take on the shocking role of supervillain Electro in the planned sequel to this summers electrifying The Amazing Spider-Man (OK, no more puns).

According to Variety, the Oscar winner will star as at least one of the villains in Marc Webb's planned sequel to this year's triumphant return to the screen by Spidey. Although the news is still unconfirmed from movie execs, both Foxx and Webb have given some glaring hints that this is the case. Foxx tweeted on Thursday (Nov. 1) "Dressed up as Electro for Halloween last night. Costume fits well." Meanwhile Webb said at a recent promotional event for The Amazing Spider-Man DVD release,: "I think Jamie Foxx is electrifying! You'll be hearing more on that shortly I'm sure."

Electro (real name Max Dillon) has been a mainstay in the Marvel comics' Spider Man series since his debut in February 1964 and although he has made countless appearances in TV versions of the web slinging adventures, this would mark his first appearance on the silver screen. Dillon gained his powers (control over electricity) when he was struck by lightning while working on a power cable, but don't go trying that yourselves.

Jamie Foxx Set To Star As Spiderman Villain Electro

Jamie Foxx Marc Webb Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

Jamie Foxx is set to give another electric performance (sorry) in the upcoming sequel to The Amazing Spiderman, as the superhero's nemesis, Electro, Variety reports.

According to sources, Foxx is deep into discussions to play the role, and tweeted, "Dressed up as Electro for Halloween last night. Costume fits well," which won't have served to dampen any rumours, that's for sure. Much like Spiderman, who of course was bitten by a radioactive spider, Electro harnesses the power of electricity due a close encounter with a lighting bolt. You would have thought the pair might bond over their shared experiences, but no. Talking yesterday to Coming Soon, the aptly named director Marc Webb said, "I think Jamie Foxx is electrifying!" and added, "I think Jamie Foxx is one of the best actors around today. He's such a great character actor and he's a really brilliant guy. I would love to work with him and you'll be hearing more on that shortly, I'm sure." Now he didn't move to confirm the rumours, but if we don't see Foxx terrorising and Spiderman coming to the rescue, we'll be disappointed.

In the interview, Webb also added his admiration for Electro in particular. "I like Electro," he smiled. "I'm fascinated by Norman Osborn and the different inflections of him. And Harry. Mary Jane and Gwen are always interesting to me."

Denzel Washington Set For Oscar Success With ‘Flight’?

Denzel Washington Robert Zemeckis John Gatins Bruce Greenwood Daniel Day Lewis Joaquin Phoenix Bradley Cooper John Hawkes Ben Affleck Jamie Foxx Quentin Tarantino

Denzel Washington’s latest film, Flight, has garnered much praise already – and for all the right reasons too – with Washington already tipped for Oscar glory for his staring role.

The film itself, directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by John Gatins, tells the story of an airline pilot who saves a flight from crashing, however the post-flight investigation into the plane’s malfunctions reveals some worrying revelations. Washington stars as said pilot, Whip Whitaker, who on top of being a veteran of his trade is also a serious alcoholic. The film also stars Bruce Greenwood as the character Charlie Anderson.

Whilst still a newcomer to the box office, critics look as though they can’t get enough of Washington and his performance, and betting sites have already placed the double-Oscar winner among the top contenders to achieve Oscar glory at next years ceremony.

Jamie Foxx Looks Set To Be Electro In The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Jamie Foxx

Last night Jamie Foxx dressed up as Electro for Halloween, and tweeted "Dressed up as Electro for Halloween last night. Costume fits well." Which seems to confirm reports that he'll be playing one of Spider-man's most dangerous enemies in the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man.

Electro's power to control electricity is gained when he's struck by lightening, which of course makes him an intimidating foe for any superhero. In the first film's post-credits scene, lightening features prominently, which was the originator of the rumours that the villain would be a focal point of the second movie. Variety was first to report that Foxx had been in talks with the films makers. Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad will be producing the sequel, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield will return to their roles and Shailene Woodley has also been reported to be joining the cast as a young Mary-Jane.

Filming is expected to begin next year, with a current release date set for May 2014. It'll be a long wait but with a cast shaping up to be one of the best yet, we're sure it'll be worth it. Before then we can enjoy Foxx in his latest role as the semi-freed slave Django, in Tarantino's latest movie Django unchained.

A Man's Story Review

Good
By following British designer Ozwald Boateng over 12 years, filmmaker Bonicos vividly captures his subject's personality on screen while recounting his rather astounding life story. But the film remains oddly dry and superficial.

Inspired by Armani, Boateng emerged from his childhood in riot-torn 1981 Brixton to become the first black tailor on Saville Row. As the creative director of Givenchy, his influence spread out through the fashion world, even as he juggled his work with his own label and two strained marriages. By 2005, he was at the centre of the Oscar red carpet, teaching American men to stop dressing like boys and reinventing the suit with shape and colour. He was awarded an OBE from the Queen in 2006.

Rio Review

Excellent
A lively South American beat infuses this colourful animated romp. The filmmakers make the most of the characters and settings without ever trying to teach us a lesson or make us cry. It's just great fun.

Blu (voiced by Eisenberg) is a blue macaw raised in Minnesota alongside a little girl Linda (Mann). Years later, bird-rescuer Tulio (Santoro) wants to take Blu back to Rio de Janeiro so he can mate with the last remaining female of the species, Jewel (Hathaway). But in Brazil, the courtship between Blu and Jewel gets off to a rocky start, not least because Blu never learned how to fly. And when smugglers steal them, they need a variety of locals (including Lopez, Morgan, Foxx and Will.i.am) to help them escape from a menacing cockatoo (Clement).

Valentine's Day Review

Good
With an enormous ensemble cast and more intertwined plots than you can count, this fluffy concoction is shamelessly sentimental and silly, and yet it's also an undemanding crowd-pleaser.

Valentine's Day in Los Angeles brings a series of romantic crises. A flower seller (Kutcher) has proposed to his less-than-keen girlfriend (Alba), then discovers his best friend's (Garner) boyfriend (Dempsey) is married. A phone-sex operator (Hathaway) is afraid to tell her boyfriend (Grace) what she does for a living. An romance-hating publicist (Biel) is helping her client (Dane) manage a media storm. A group of teens (Swift, Lautner, Roberts and Jenkins) are grappling with chastity. And two strangers (Roberts and Cooper) strike up a conversation on a trans-Atlantic flight.

Dreamgirls Review

Very Good
If only they had let Bill Condon direct Chicago instead of just writing the screenplay. As Condon shows with his razzle-dazzle adaptation of the 1981 Tony-winning musical Dreamgirls, he would have been quite an improvement on Chicago director Rob Marshall -- who, before he gave us a mostly-Chinese cast for Memoirs of a Geisha, tried unconvincingly to prove that Renée Zellweger could sing and Richard Gere could dance. It didn't quite kill the movie (the material is almost indestructible), but made one wonder what it could have been with some actual professionals in the lead. Condon makes no such mistake with Dreamgirls, finding a cast with just the right mix of theatrical chops and movie star charisma. In short: If anybody's thinking of doing a film of Jelly's Last Jam, they should see what Eddie Murphy's schedule looks like. The story is just about perfect for a musical: simple enough to hang a number of tunes on, and not so complex that it requires an inordinate amount of dialogue. A quick pastiche of a number of popular R&B groups from the 1960s and '70s, the musical follows one talented Supremes-like trio of singers, the Dreams, as they get their big break doing backup for James Brown-esque screecher James "Thunder" Early and secure the services of ambitious proto-music mogul Curtis Taylor. The fortunes of some will rise, others will fall, trusts will be betrayed, and beliefs about love and friendship will be tested -- basically nothing that can't be best expressed by a soaring ballad.Dreamgirls fairly jumps out of the gate with startling impatience, doing everything possible to get the audience's attention short of having the performers actually reach out from the screen and drag people up on stage. The entire beginning -- set backstage at a Detroit talent show -- is a barrage of spotlights, flashy and coordinated outfits, and neck-breaking music-video editing; the remainder of the film lets up a little, but not much. The energetic songs come fast and quick, Condon and his brilliant cast snapping them out like there's no shortage. Fortunately, there isn't.The genius of the original musical was setting itself in such a fecund period for R&B and soul, thus providing a deep well from which to draw inspiration. It was that period starting when songs that were popular on African-American radio ("race records," as they were called) were either ignored or stolen and watered down for the white mainstream, moving into the golden era of the Motown groups and stretching up until the early stirrings of disco. Dreamgirls hits, sometimes obliquely, on a number of big historical moments from this period, such as the scene where Taylor (Jamie Foxx) comes up with the idea of payola to bribe DJs to get the girls' songs on the air. The film is hardly weighted down by history, however, as there's always another number to get to, or another fight to resolve; most of the latter being caused by Effie White (Jennifer Hudson), the loudest and most talented of the trio.Condon took a risk by casting a relative unknown (well, save for American Idol) in this key role, but it more than pays off. Cast aside by Taylor fairly early on, once the chillingly business-like producer decides she's too much trouble, Effie spends a good deal of time in exile, working on a comeback. As everyone knows, Hudson more than holds up her end in the singing department, rattling the rafters each and every time it's called for. But fortunately she's a good enough actress to keep her character likeable, admirably tough instead of annoyingly stubborn. Foxx plays things closer to the vest than he normally does, which gives his character a chilling villainy at times, but comes dangerously close to non-acting at others -- with a similarly muted turn in Miami Vice, this could mark a disturbing trend for a normally explosive performer. The biggest and most pleasant surprise, however, is Eddie Murphy as Early. When he could have fallen back on his well-tooled James Brown impression, Murphy instead mixes up a number of different performers into his act and adds his own swagger and polish, while not forgetting the painful vulnerability of a once ground-breaking artist who's terrified about being left behind (there's more than a little autobiography in this performance). It's as though a curtain has been raised from Murphy: He knew and we knew all along that he could pull off something like this, but it just took the right film to make everybody realize once again, what a star he is.With all the killer tunes and star turns (even the normally sleep-inducing Beyoncé Knowles, as the Diana Ross-like Deena Jones, knocks it out of the park) it's surprising in the end that Dreamgirls isn't a complete winner. Maybe too much ground is covered too fast, too much attention paid to flash and artifice, when more groundwork should have been laid. For some reason, even with all the powerful emotions unleashed during the film, there's a strange hollowness at the end, once all the bright lights have dimmed and echoes faded. Maybe it's too much to ask that a musical deliver knockout songs and a solidly-constructed story at the same time, as the two often work at cross purposes. More likely, we should just be happy that Hollywood has figured out how to make musicals again, even if they only come around every four years or so.His girls like to party all the time.

Miami Vice Review

Bad
You can learn a lot about Michael Mann's updated Miami Vice by listening to Glenn Frey. It's true. Many questions surrounding this remake are answered using the lyrics to Frey's prophetic "Smuggler's Blues," a song made famous by the seminal 1980s buddy-cop drama that sold sex and sidearms on South Beach. For instance, why would Mann - a respected filmmaker riding a decade-long creative hot streak - blow the dust off a hopelessly dated property he last executive-produced almost 20 years ago? As Frey sings, "It's the lure of easy money. It's got a very strong appeal." And why would a studio support Mann's impulsive let's-get-the-band-back-together decision after projects from Bewitched to The Dukes of Hazzard demonstrate that audiences don't care to relive the past? Frey confesses, "It's a losing proposition. But one you can't refuse."In its prime, the television-sized Vice influenced the fashion industry, peddled synthesizer-laden soundtracks, and made Don Johnson a household name. This realistically superficial recycling, however, will cure insomnia, set the advancement of digital cinematography back a few years, and unsuccessfully argue in favor of the mullet as an acceptable coif style. The story lost me almost immediately, but looked cool doing it. Undercover detectives James "Sonny" Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Ricardo Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) are deep into one case when a former informant contacts them claiming that a deal he was working went bad. To clean up the mess, Crockett and Tubbs must infiltrate a sprawling drug cartel lorded over by menacing Jose Yero (John Ortiz, mimicking Al Pacino's Tony Montana character) and sultry Isabella (Gong Li, her broken English disrupting half of her lines).Vice marks a return for Mann in multiple ways. He's back on the beach with Crockett and Tubbs, characters he last manipulated in 1989. More importantly, it's the director's first mature cops-and-robbers thriller since 1995's Heat, a modern classic which also presented an in-depth analysis of individuals operating on opposite sides of the law. Part of Heat's allure, though, was the intimate knowledge we collected about Pacino's bulldog detective and Robert De Niro's elusive thief. Watching the former sacrifice his marriage and family life for the sake of the job added juicy drama to his otherwise routine investigation.Vice lacks that human touch, those insights into the men away from their beats. Mann ladles on ample attitude, while his chiseled leading men provide plenty of posturing. Mannequin Vice might have made for a better title. Foxx and Farrell buy into the shout-and-scowl method, with an emphasis on the latter. But the script neglects to fill in details about Sonny and Ricardo beyond quick peeks into their active bedrooms. It's a fault built into the premise. These men exist deep undercover, so the lives they lead are smokescreens - which makes it difficult to care whether they continue to blow smoke or not.As a whole, the stiff and procedural Vice moves too slowly to hold our interests. It's a thinking-man's summer picture, code for "no action, plenty of conversation." Normally that's fine, but Mann pens lines that would have been too cheesy even for the '80s program. Crockett repeatedly claims, "No one has ever treaded where we are now." We just don't believe him. One villain barks, "He wants to promise them silver, but pay them in lead!" James Bond's foes made more effective threats.Oscar-winning cinematographer Dion Beebe continues to experiment with digital technology at Mann's request. It works when the action shifts to the open seas, but his night shoots produce muddy visuals that - while realistic - are ugly and drab. I guess when compared to the original Vice's pastel color scheme, it's an improvement.Frey once again gets the last words. I'm paraphrasing a few of his somber lyrics so that they properly sum up how I felt leaving my screening. I'm sorry it went down like this, and the audience had to lose. It's the nature of this business. It's the critic's blues.Watch that wake!

Collateral Review

Very Good
There are two kinds of roller coasters. The most modern kind uses maglev technology to take you from 0 to 100mph in a matter of seconds. The old-school kind slowly creeps you up an incline before letting gravity pull you down at sickening speeds. Collateral is definitely the latter, and actually delivers more in the build-up than the plummet.

Cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) is having an ordinary night until he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith). They have a pleasant, interesting conversation, which director Michael Mann lets unfold at a natural, almost seductive pace. When they finally part ways, you feel as if you've watched a short romantic comedy. Enter Vincent (Tom Cruise).

Bait Review

Bad

Director Anthony Fuqua doesn't seem terribly interested in the plot of "Bait," a impotent "Enemy of the State" knock-off that reeks of a sloppy re-write designed to accommodate the comedy stylings of Jamie Foxx in the Will Smith-type role.

Fuqua's main focus is turning the picture into a resume-builder and he spends the whole two hours showing off his technique. Dripping with visual flair overkill, the chase scenes, stunts and explosions get the deluxe treatment. A 30-second sex scene is shot from about 20 angles. Even a throwaway speech Foxx gives about missing his father (it's just a line to get his ex-girlfriend in the sack) is filmed with four or five cameras -- one of them restlessly circling him as he mock-emotes -- and edited with slow-motion effects and multiple fade-ins and fade-outs.

"Lookie what I can do!" Fuqua seems to be saying, much as he did in "The Replacement Killers," Chow Yun-Fat's Hong-Kong-style American debut. "Please don't send me back to making music videos!"

Any Given Sunday Review

Good

There's only about 22 minutes of plot in "Any Given Sunday," Oliver Stone's innovative, bone-crunching ballet of sound and fury football, so lets get that out of the way right now:

Al Pacino stars as the embattled, old-school coach of a fictitious pro football team. Cameron Diaz, is the willful, profit-zealous daughter of the franchise's recently deceased owner. Jamie Foxx is a hotshot young quarterback whose know-it-all attitude and colossal ego threaten team unity. He's just replaced the injured, aging, Elway-esque veteran QB Dennis Quaid, whose compound back injury has spelled curtains for his career -- if only his ruthlessly ambitious, harpy of a wife (Lauren Holly) would accept that fact.

During the last two minutes of the fourth quarter of the Big Playoff Game that serves as the film's climax, each of these characters (especially the selfish ones) will have an epiphany about what's really important in their lives.
