The Butler has outperformed all of its rivals upon its first weekend, having been released on 16th August to much nodding from critics and $25 million (£15.9m) earned. The film showcases an all-star cast, who portray a period of dramatic social upheaval in America, set around the life of the not-entirely-fictional butler, Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker).

Gaines serves as a butler in the White House for 34 years and eight presidents and uses his unique position to witness important presidential discussions of national civil rights issues as the historical events play out. The movie charts such landmark events as Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, the Vietnam war, the Nixon resignation, Obama's presidential campaign and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Gaines' character is based upon the life of Eugene Allen who worked in the White House from 1952 to 1986.

The big news this week was that Harrison Ford will join the Expendables for their third film adventure. Sylvester Stallone tweeted the announcement, then went on to mention that Bruce Willis won't be around this time, apparently because he asked for too much money. Stallone was also caught on camera poking fun at Arnold Schwarzenegger's "big ego". Before they re-team for the next Expendables movie, they're costarring in the prison-break thriller Escape Plan. Watch Sly talking about Arnie at Comic Con here.

The next big superhero blockbuster will be Thor: The Dark World, and we got a more detailed look at the film in a new trailer this week. Pretty much everyone is back, including Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba and Stellan Skarsgard. The movie looks like a huge-scale action adventure with a sense of humour about it. It opens in October. Watch the trailer for Thor: The Dark World here.

Jodie Foster's Cecil B DeMille Award And Why She's The Perfect Woman For It

Jodie Foster Jane Fonda Mel Gibson

The question as to why Jodie Foster was honoured with the esteemed Golden Globe 'Cecil B DeMille Award' is a far easier one to answer than why it has taken so long for her to be recognised for her talents and "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment". With starring roles in some of the late 20th century's most iconic movies, she has been at the cornerstone of the American film industry for almost 40 years. Her acceptance speech at the ceremony (13th Jan), while slightly enigmatic, shed further light and further reason as to why she is more than deserving of the award.

Born in 1962, Foster's rise to fame came early. She appeared in TV's Paper Moon during the 70s and by 1976, aged just 14, she had landed the role that would catapult her into the attention of the masses- co-starring as Iris Steensma in Taxi Driver alongside Robert DeNiro. She won two BAFTAs for the role as well as landing her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Her role in the 1988 thriller The Accused saw her win both the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Actress, and did the same just two years later for her starring appearance in Silence of the Lambs. Her career has never slowed and she has also turned her hand at producing and directing.

In her speech she left everyone reeling though when she came out as gay. "I already did my coming out a thousand years ago, in the Stone Age," she said, quoted by CBS. "Those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually to everyone that knew her, everyone she actually met. But now apparently I'm told that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance, and a primetime reality show... my reality show would so boring."

Spirits Of The Dead Review

Very Good
A rare '60s oddity, Spirits of the Dead takes a weird premise and makes it even weirder. How weird? Try classic Edgar Allen Poe stories given a 1960s spin -- one that lambasts the whole free love/no morals movement the way that only the Frenchies could do. And stars some of the biggest stars of the era -- Fonda! Bardot! Delon! -- and is told in three short pieces, courtesy of three big-time directors -- Fellini! Malle! Vadim!

Roger Vadim takes his Barbarella star Jane Fonda through a very loose interpretation of "Metzengerstein," with Fonda as an aristocrat bored of the constant orgies and swift executions of her enemies. She ends up falling for her cousin, but when he rejects her, she burns down his stable, taking him along with it. Strangely, the cousin ends up possessing the spirit of a horse, which the countess ends up fascinated with anew. It's the weakest of the three shorts, but it's worth seeing if for no other reason than to see Barbarella trot out her French. (To be honest, that might be the only reason -- the story just doesn't make much of an impact.)
