Janet Jackson showed she really is well and truly back on Sunday evening, when she took to the stage at the 2015 BET ceremony to be honoured with the Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award. The singer has recently announced her return to the music world with her latest single ‘No Sleep’ dropping last week ahead of her eleventh stdio album.

Before the award was presented the BET audience were treated to clips from Janet’s long career then Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe took to the stage for a dance performance honouring the Rhythm Nation icon. The performance ended when Jackson herself appeared on the stage in a white jumpsuit.

Accepting the honour, Jackson told the crowd "It's been a very long journey. My heart is so full. Thank you God for making everything possible. I am so grateful for the support you've always given me.”

The 49 year old also paid tribute to her parents, Katherine Jackson and Joe Jackson, who were both in attendance. "To my beautiful mother and father and to my entire family,” she said. “Your love is unbreakable.”

Also not forgotten was Jackson’s husband, businessman Wissam Al Mana and of course her fans. “Last but not least, to my loving husband and to all the fans," she concluded. "I've missed you so much and I love you so much.”

Sunday night’s ceremony also saw Nicki Minaj honoured with two awards, for best female hip hop artist for her ‘Anaconda’ video. Best Male Hip-Hop Artist was awarded to Kendrick Lamar, while British singer Sam Smith was named Best New Artist.

Video of the year went to Beyoncé’s low-key ‘7/11’, which also nabbed her the Video Director of the Year award, which she shared with collaborators Ed Burke & Todd Tours. Beyoncé was also named Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, while Chris Brown took home the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist gong.
