There were very few women involved in the rock scene in the late 60's and Janis Joplin was the most famous name of them all. The little girl with the BIG voice was accepted and treated as an equal in an environment that was usually dominated by men.
Janis' early career saw her perform with Big Brother and the Holding Company and later began a solo career and eventually recruited additional members to form the Full Tilt Boogie Band. Together they made one album, Pearl, which was released posthumously after Joplin's death early in 1971. However successful Janis became, she constantly struggled with depression and had a dependency on heroin - an addiction that would finally take her life at the age of 27.
Director Amy J. Berg has made a documentary about Janis Joplin's life and tries to cast some light on the person behind the voice and the songs.
