The actor plays Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman in the new DCEU flick.
With 'Justice League' now finally in movie theatres, it's fair to say that the latest DC Extended Universe release has done what most of those that came before it did with the critics and wider viewing public, splitting opinion right down the middle. Wherever you sit on the spectrum of opinions, what's obvious is that this is a film that went through some of the biggest changes possible before hitting the big screen.
Jason Momoa stars as Aquaman in the DCEU's new release 'Justice League'
Zack Snyder is officially the director of 'Justice League', but the filmmaker was forced to cede the movie to Joss Whedon following a family tragedy. This led to scenes being reshot, lines being re-written and some being cut from proceedings entirely, despite featuring in trailers that led up to the film's release.
Jason Momoa's character Arthur Curry, also known as the crime-fighting superhero Aquaman may be the person to have suffered the most from Whedon's involvement and behind-the-scenes meddling, and it's something that Momoa sees himself, thanks to all of the footage that was left in the editing room with him featuring in it.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the actor explained: "The challenging part is [the Justice League story] is only about a weekend in Arthur Curry’s life. [Fans] might be like, ‘Why is he that grumpy? Why’s he hiding up there?’ We had it all planned out. A lot of things got cut. But it’s not my movie. It’s a huge movie introducing three new characters, and for myself and The Flash and Cyborg, there was a lot that was there we just couldn’t get in. It could have been two movies. We had some stuff with William Dafoe. The whole Atlantean part, about me being this reluctant king. There was no need for it because you’re going to see it in 'Aquaman'. It’s not an Aquaman movie, it’s a Justice League movie."
Whether we'll ever see the footage removed from the cinematic cut of 'Justice League' is a question for those working on the home release, but fans are already online and petitioning for a full release of Snyders's movie. That's looking increasingly unlikely to happen, but it won't stop DC fans from hoping for the best. We'll have to keep our eyes on this one for the latest updates, which we'll bring to you as and when we get them.
