The Fate Of The Furious Review

Very Good

With the more dumbed-down title Fast & Furious 8 outside of North America, this overcrowded franchise continues in its trajectory to provide mindlessly outrageous thrills involving muscly guys, tough girls and loud cars. This episode is marginally more grounded than the high-flying previous instalment, but it's still utterly preposterous. It's also a huge amount of fun, thanks to the snappy cast and far larger than life driving stunts.

We catch up with Dom and Letty (Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez) living in Havana and challenging the locals to some vroom-vroom racing antics. But their happy life is interrupted by the arrival of Cipher (Charlize Theron), a mysterious woman who has something on Dom and lures him to the dark side. To stop Cipher's nefarious plan, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is brought back into action by Mr Nobody (Kurt Russell) and his rookie colleague Eric (Scott Eastwood), who also draft in Letty and the team (Tyrese Gibson, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges and Nathalie Emmanuel) before heading off to Berlin. Things don't go so well there, so they bring in hothead nemesis Deckard (Jason Statham) and chase Dom and Cipher to New York and Arctic Russia for even more outrageous vehicular mayhem.

New to the franchise, director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) gives the film a gritty edge that sits surprisingly well with a stream of wry comedy running right through every scene. He also kicks off the action from the opening shot, then barely pauses for breath for a odd moment of plot exposition or emotion along the way. This is full-on action entertainment, riotously over-the-top and hilariously enjoyable, even if it's dumb as a post. And the action sequences are jaw-droppingly enormous.

Fast and Furious 8 (The Fate Of The Furious) Super Bowl Trailer

Just what does Dominic Toretto think he's doing? It seems the original team has disbanded, with Brian and Mia having retired from the fast life (literally) and the world of crime, and it seemed like Dom and Letty had a normal life ahead of them following their marriage. But that's just not the way life goes for Dom, whose love of danger seems to far outweigh his love for his friends and family. Just when you thought that their lives couldn't get anymore complicated, a mysterious woman walks in and threatens to dismantle everything, encouraging Dom to betray those he holds dear for one more adventure. Hobbs, meanwhile, isn't about to let Dom get away with it this time, and he and his team cross terrains of every kind from Cuba to the Arctic in a bid to take him down once and for all.

The Expendables 3 Reassembles The Troops

Sylvester Stallone Jason Statham Mel Gibson

Sylvester Stallone and his franchise for ageing action stars is back! Yes, the gang has nearly doubled for the latest Expendables adventure, stirring in big-named oldies along with fresh blood. The plot may not make any sense, and this one's been chopped down to a PG-13, but with a cast this beefy, you don't want to miss it.

Expendables 3Expendables 3

Stallone returns as star and cowriter, along with previous cohorts Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Terry Crews. The notable no-show this time is Bruce Willis, who is rumoured to have asked for $1 million per day to return, apparently prompting Stallone to tweet, "Greedy and lazy ...... a sure formula for career failure."

The Expendables 3 World Premiere [Pictures]

Sylvester Stallone Jason Statham Jonathan Ross

The sun beamed down on a range of A-Z-list celebs last night (August 4) as The Expendables 3 enjoyed its world premiere in London.

As well as the film’s stars, like Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas and Kellan Lutz, a bunch of celebs trampled the red carpet ahead of the film's world premiere including Jonathan Ross, who made some seriously questionable fashion choices.

The all-out action film, currently enjoying a third outing, sees many of Hollywood’s favorite stars combine. At 68, you would think Stallone is coming to end of his stunt career. He, on the other hand, has different ideas.

Cast Of "Expendables 3" Tanks At Cannes. Literally.

Sylvester Stallone Mel Gibson Jason Statham

Tanks at Cannes – if anyone could pull it off, it had to be Sly Stallone and company. Stallone and Expendables 3 costars made their arrival, riding along the Croisette in the French city in two massive Soviet tanks. Sure, it didn’t do anything to help the already terrible traffic in Cannes around festival time, but it did contribute to the film’s eye-popping promotional bill of $2 million, spent over the course of the festival.

Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone shows his support for the efforts to rescue over 200 girls kidnapped by militants in Nigeria.

Besides the tank stunt, admittedly one of the better ideas to come out of a Hollywood promo team, the $2 million budget also included a promo of clips from the movie and a star-studded press conference at the Carlton hotel. The press conference featured almost all the stars of the film (and the tank stunt) including returning heroes Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dolph Lundgren, as well as new recruits Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and Kelsey Grammar. Nu Image and Millenium Films must be working on a very liberal budget this time around.

Jason Statham Calls On The Academy To Recognise Stunt Actors At The Oscars

Jason Statham Hal Needham

Jason Statham has called on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to finally recognise the work that Hollywood's stunt actors at the Oscars ceremony. The Brit actor, who does most of his own stunts, told Vanity Fair this week that the work of stuntmen and women needs to be recognised, as they so regularly put their lives on the line for the sake of movies.

"All of the stunt men — these are the unsung heroes,” Statham said in his interview with Vanity Fair. “Nobody is giving them any credibility. They’re risking their necks. And then you’ve got poncy actors pretending like they’re doing [the stunts].”

Statham can hardly be cast into this group of "poncy" actors, as he regularly carries out his own stunts in his films. The Homefront actor also began his career as a martial artist and diver, before landing his big film break in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and has a good idea of what goes into making a great stunt work. He went on to say that stunt actors are "incredibly talented" and, having worked alongside so many in his time, insisted that their profession is long overdue some recognition.

Oh, Crumbs: Jason Statham To Replace Daniel Craig In Layer Cake Sequel

Jason Statham Daniel Craig

Urgh. We loved Layer Cake. Everyone loved Layer Cake. It was really, really, good and better than Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Now, its memory is in danger of being tarnished by news that Jason Statham and his manager and partner Steve Chasman have acquired the rights to J.J Connolly's novel Viva La Madness - the follow-up to Layer Cake.

According to Deadline.com, Statham will play the Connolly's chief protagonist - who famously remains nameless and was last seen trying to survive a gunshot wound in the thrilling concluding moments of Matthew Vaughn's 2004 movie.

It took Connolly over a decade to continue the tale, with his protagonist winding up on beach looking for an early retirement. Unable to pull himself away from a life of crime, he gets involved with trans-Atlantic drug deals, money laundering and Venezuelan drug cartels.

Jason Statham & James Franco Face Off In Explosive 'Homefront' Trailer [Still + Trailer]

Jason Statham James Franco Sylvester Stallone Winona Ryder Kate Bosworth

Homefront is a tense action thriller that wants to poke holes in the typical story of a rural town's collective hostility towards a new family. Based on the Chuck Logan novel of the same name, the film will introduce Logan's much-used character Phil Broker (Jason Statham) to the big screen for the first time and judging by the trailer alone, we should be in for a wild ride when the film is released later this year.

Jason Statham Izabela Vidovic
Things start off blissfully for Broker and his daughter

Broker is an ex-DEA agent (not a former Minnesota cop, as he is in the book) who moves out to a rural town in the south of the United States to begin a new life with his daughter, Maddie (Izabela Vidovic), following the death of his wife. At first, things seem to be as idyllic as Broker would have hoped, with horses to ride, lakes to swim in and a large house to call their own, however things soon take a turn for the worse when Broker's daughter fights back against the school bully.

"I'm not in Kick-Ass 2 and I don't think I'm in Expendables 3. And I like those guys, but I would say it would be highly unlikely that I'd be in that movie," he added, destroying another fervent internet rumour while he was at it.

Hummingbird [Redemption] Review

Good

Jason Statham takes a darker role than usual in a gritty London drama that never quite seems sure of itself, as writer-turned-director Knight mashes several huge social issues with a hint of action and a rather awkward romance. It's always intriguing, and has several jaw-dropping moments along the way, but ultimately leaves us wondering why Knight made the film at all.

Statham plays Joey, an ex-soldier on the run from the military police. Living homeless in central London, he breaks into a sexy loft flat and discovers that the resident will be away for eight months. So he assumes his identity, borrows his bank account and starts his life over with a job in a Chinese restaurant. Then his bosses (Wong and Lee) notice how good he is in a fight, and give him a high-paying job as a mob goon. With his new wealth, he starts helping out Cristina (Buzek), the Polish-born nun who feeds the homeless in Covent Garden. As they begin a strange friendship, he also contacts his bitter ex-wife (McClure) and young daughter.

As he did in his scripts for Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises, Knight reels off the social issues in London's underbelly: illegal immigrants, human trafficking, gang violence, desperate prostitution, post-traumatic stress. But the real story here is Joey's redemption, as pointedly symbolised by the hummingbirds that flit through his drug-detox dreams. As he tries to help Cristina in a variety of sometimes contrived ways, she responds by improbably falling for him. Meanwhile, he spends a lot of time searching for a missing friend (Bewick) while also trying to make things up to his ex.

Hummingbird Premiere: Is Agata Buzek The Skinniest Actress EVER?

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Agata Buzek Jason Statham Megan Fox Angelina Jolie

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is skinny. Angelina Jolie is skinny. Megan Fox is skinny. But Polish actress Agata Buzek is SKINNY. Wielding a cigarette, the Polish actress turned up at the London premiere of her new movie Hummingbird on Monday night (June 17, 2013) looking incredibly slender - especially when posing next to muscly co-star Jason Statham.

The blonde star wore her hair tied in a ponytail with a patterned sleeveless top and cropped trousers. She teamed the outfit with a black belt tied around her waist, cream coat and black flat shoes. Agata formerly worked as a high fashion model in Paris and is known for her skinny frame, though her recent weight loss was noticeable at the world premiere of Hummingbird, reports the Daily Mail.

Buzek is now thought to be slimmer than a US size 0 (a UK size 4), though she appears perfectly happy and was in good spirits in central London on Monday. She plays nun Christina in the new action movie - also named Redemption - about a homeless and on the run ex-special forces soldier navigating London's criminal underworld. He seizes an opportunity to assume another man's identity - transforming into an avenging angel in the process.

Sylvester Stallone Announces Expendables 3 And Great Escape 2 (Sort Of)

Sylvester Stallone Arnold Schwarzenegger Dolph Lundgren Jason Statham Mikael Hafstrom Joseph Gordon-Levitt Jackie Chan Nicolas Cage Jet Li Chuck Norris Terry Crews

It's shaping up to be a pretty hectic 18 months or so for Sylvester Stallone, who will star in two big-budget movies for Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment, Escape Plan and The Expendables 3. The former stars Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger as prison cellmates who work together to escape. The Great Escape, essentially.

The movie, directed by Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hafstrom, is written by Miles Chapman and Jason Keller, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It will go up against Joseph Gordon-Lecitt's directorial debut Don Jon and fantasy movie Seventh Son on October 18, 2013. The Expendables action adventure franchise continues on August 15, 2014 with the third movie, once again starring Stallone as Barney Ross, who leads his group of mercenaries into another seemingly impossible mission. Martial arts legend Jackie Chan and Oscar winner Nicolas Cage are set to be appear in the movie, which will undoubtedly continue to the huge success of the franchise. As yet, the other major studios have not announced any movies for release on the same date.

The Expendables 2, starring Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris and Terry Crews, opened on August 16, 2012 to takings of $28.6 million. The movie has since earned $300 million worldwide.

Is Serious Jason Statham Spreading His Wings In 'Hummingbird'? (Trailer)

Jason Statham

We all know that Jason Statham’s a bit of a bruiser with the same amount of dexterity in his acting as a mature oak has in its wood. But Hummingbird is an attempt to move Statham away from the straight up beat-em-up films he’s become sadly all too known for – albeit by giving him a few scraps early in the trailer to show us just exactly what it is he’s trying to move away from.

Statham plays Joey Jones, an unimaginatively titled (sorry to anyone out there actually called Joey Jones) who takes a pretty bad beating on the streets he’s living on one night and decides enough’s enough and he need to get his life on track again. The reason it’s track, of course, is because he’s an ex-special forces whose luck’s gone sour. After getting a job as a chef in London, it looks like this film’s starting to turn towards a bit of a grittier Under Siege, though unfortunately with no Gary Busey dressed up as a woman – which would’ve improved this trailer by a good 100%. Though working as a chef, Jones also gets a job as a security guard – he’s not forgotten those special forces combat skills after all – and unsurprisingly, the trailer takes a swift change in direction towards his physical attributes and general punching people out (including, in one disturbing clip, a woman) rather than his culinary abilities. Which is a shame, Masterchef: The Movie has been long overdue.

He is ex-special forces on the run from military court so when he finds the opportunity to transform into another person, he grabs it with both hands. When his boss offers some new kind of work, he decides that he must do everything in his power to help people whose lives have been destroyed by poverty, especially when he is informed of the brutal death of one of his closest friends. However, he is torn between his desire to help those in need, and run away and start over his own life in a new place.

Parker Review

Very Good

Far better made than it has any right to be, this cheesy 70s-style thriller is given a thoroughly engaging kick by veteran filmmaker Hackford working outside his usual dramatic genre. It's predictable and far too long, but Hackford grounds everything in gritty reality, avoiding obnoxious effects work while indulging in entertaining innuendo and riotously nasty action sequences.

None of this is much of a stretch for the cast, and Statham's Parker is essentially the same character he always plays: a ruthlessly efficient, indestructible criminal with a conscience. After a gang of thugs (including Chiklis and Collins) betrays him following a fairgrounds heist, Parker miraculously recovers from his hideous injuries and heads to Florida to get revenge. He uses local estate agent Leslie (Lopez) to find the gang's lair, and she's instantly attracted to the way he fills out his designer suit. Living with her soap-addict mum (LuPone), Leslie is looking for a wealthy man to rescue her. And she's already too involved when she realises that Parker isn't who he seems to be.

There isn't much to the plot, which is packed with contrived twists and turns and never follows through the intriguing possibilities along the way. At least the film avoids the usual action cliches, as Hackford sharply orchestrates each fight sequence to make it both lucid and startlingly brutal. This earthy approach keeps things relatively believable, until Parker emerges with yet another serious injury that doesn't slow him down at all. Meanwhile, Hackford injects plenty of eyebrow-raising flirtation that keeps us smiling. Statham and Lopez may not be stretching themselves as actors, but they clearly have a lot of fun circling around each other like dogs on heat.

Jennifer Lopez - The Ultimate Single Lady In Leather And Spikes

Jennifer Lopez Jason Statham

Jennifer Lopez has been in the news a lot recently, following her divorce from Marc Anthony and of course, her new film, Parker.

The thing that everyone seemed most impressed with, however, weren’t J Lo’s acting credentials, or even her personal life, but her wardrobe choices – like most times actually, because lets face it, there haven’t been any Oscar nods for Lopez as far as we can remember. On top of that, Parker hasn’t really created a media storm at all and, apart from Jason Statham and Lopez herself, there haven’t been any notable names attached to the project.

However, her style is definitely unique and Jennifer definitely flaunted it during her appearance on the Katie show this week. The singer donned a leather jumpsuit and capped off the outfit with some bang-on-trend spiky heels. We’re not sure how we feel about this combo, to be honest, but J Lo’s affinity for The Jumpsuit has become infamous over the years. To be fair, if the lady can pull it off, who’s to stop her from adding a little edge to her appearance, especially in light of her newly recovered single lady status? And if that edge comes in the form of shiny jumpsuits, well… ok, it looks a bit odd, but if there’s one person who can pull it off, it’s Jennifer Lopez.

Jennifer Lopez, Parker Premiere, Las VegasJennifer Lopez Was The Star Attraction At The 'Parker Premiere' In Las Vegas

Jennifer Lopez appeared to "go commando" at the Las Vegas premiere of her new drama-thriller 'Parker' on Thursday evening (January 24, 2013). Let us explain: the 43-year-old actress wore a figure-hugging white gown, which looked fairly innocuous at first glance, though the sheer side panels gave the game away - Lopez was indeed wearing no underwear. Still, the R&B star and former American Idol judge looked pretty elegant, accentuating her signature curves while beaming for the cameras.

The movie stars Jason Statham as a thief with a unique code of professional ethics who is double-crossed by his crew and left for dead. Assuming his new disguise and forming an unlikely alliance with a woman on the inside (Lopez), the professional criminal looks to hijack his former crew's latest heist.

Parker Trailer

Parker is a skilled thief with a very specific moral code; never kill anyone who doesn't deserve it and never steal from those with little money. Other than that, he is brutal, doing anything it takes to seize his target along with his so-called loyal team. However, one day he finds that his accomplices are not the people he thought they were when they stab him in the back and leave him to die. As single-minded as ever, Parker assumes the new name and identity of Texas guy Daniel Parmitt and sets out to destroy his former allies for what they did to him seeking an unusual partnership with Leslie:  a local resident of Palm Beach who has inside information on Parker's targets and agrees to help him despite having reservations about his plan to murder every last one of them and take the loot from their latest robbery.

'Parker' is a crime thriller based on the novel 'Flashfire' by Donald E. Westlake. It has been directed by the Oscar winner that is Taylor Hackford ('An Officer and a Gentleman', 'The Devil's Advocate') and written by John J. McLaughlin ('Black Swan', 'Hitchcock') and will be released in cinemas across the UK from March 8th 2013.

The Expendables 2 Review

Good
Although there's been no attempt to tone down the first film's bloodthirsty hyperviolence or dim-witted plotting, this sequel is a massive improvement simply because they have fun with the premise. As a result, so do we.

Barney (Stallone) and his team of ageing mercenaries are coerced by Church (Willis) into heading into hostile territory to retrieve a top secret electronic gadget. Most shocking is the fact that Church insists that a woman, Maggie (Yu), joins them. And when things go wrong, Barney leads the gang on a grisly revenge mission against a nasty villain (Van Damme) who's callously putting humanity in peril. Along the way they're joined by Church and Trench (Schwarzenegger), and get help from lone-wolf Booker (Norris).

Video - Jason Statham Stocks Up For Christmas

English actor Jason Statham (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels; The Expendables; Gnomeo and Juliet) shops at Bristol Farms grocery store with his girlfriend, Transformers actress and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Jason leaves the store with a friend, pushing a trolley piled high with shopping bags. He has help putting the bags into his car, before pushing the trolley in the direction of a nearby photographer. Jason returns to the store for something else, before driving to the entrance to pick up Rosie.

Jason will reprise his role as Lee Christmas in The Expendables 2, which will be released in 2012. It is rumoured that he will star in the sixth instalment of The Fast and The Furious franchise, which has a release date of May 2013

The Expendables 2 Trailer

Mr Church reunites the Expendables: Barney Ross; Lee Christmas; Yin Yang; Gunnar Jensen; Toll Road and Hale Caesar for a simple job. They are joined by two newcomers: Billy the Kid and Maggie. All in all, it looks like an easy paycheck for the Expendables. But things aren't always what they appear to be and when one of their own is brutally killed, the men set out to get revenge.

The Expendables are a group of highly trained mercenaries who are past their prime. In their last adventure, they get together for a mission to overthrow a Latin American dictator in Vilena, an island in between the Gulf of Mexico and South America.

Chinese actress Yu Nan joins the cast as the first female Expendable, while Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger expand their cameos as Mr Church and Trent Mauser, respectively. The Expendables 2 is directed by Simon West (Con Air; Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and was written by Sylvester Stallone, who directed the first film, which was released in 2010. Upon its release, The Expendables was a box office hit, grossing $266,159,621 worldwide, despite mixed reviews from critics.

The Expendables are back and this time it's personal.

Blitz Review

Good
This British crime thriller is so unapologetic about recycling cliches that it's actually hilariously good fun to watch. Even with its glaring plot holes and camp performances, the cast and crew's chutzpah keeps it consistently entertaining.

Brant (Statham) is a bad-boy South East London detective always in trouble with the authorities. But he gets the job done, so his loyal chief (Rylance) protects him. His new challenge is to find a brazen psycho (Gillen) who's killing cops in cold blood. Working with new boss Nash (Considine), who's tormented for being gay, Brant starts bullishly breaking the rules to solve the case. Meanwhile, the killer is leaking information to a tabloid hack (Morrissey). And another of Brant's cop pals (Ashton) is struggling with returning to the job after her stint in rehab.

The Mechanic Review

OK
Remade from Michael Winner's 1972 thriller, this action movie can't be bothered to get as dark and edgy as it should be. But the cast members keep us watching, even as things turn unnecessarily grisly.

Elite hitman Arthur (Statham) lives a solitary life in a New Orleans bayou with his stinking wealth and exquisite taste. But he's shocked when his boss (Goldwyn) gives him his next assignment: to kill his mentor Harry (Sutherland).

Arthur is a cool professional, but now he's also wracked with guilt. So he takes Harry's wastrel son Steve (Foster) under his wing, teaching him the assassination trade and letting him practice during a few jobs. But the work gets increasingly dangerous, and soon it becomes apparent that Harry was set up. Revenge is in the air.

Chaos (2005) Review

Weak
Though it ended up going straight to DVD in the U.S. (after earning a total of about $1 million in France), Chaos surprises by opening with a real bang. Might something good actually come of this? The film opens with a big bank heist -- always a reliable crowd-pleaser -- in which Wesley Snipes' Lorenz holes up and makes a bunch of demands, including that suspended cop Quentin Conners (Jason Statham) be brought in to negotiate. But just when things look like they're going to get interesting, Lorenz blows up the bank, the hostages all run out, and Lorenz vanishes... along with the movie's engagement.

Chaos immediately descends into doldrums, with Conners and extremely strange partner Shane (Ryan Phillippe) trying to figure out who Lorenz is and why he robbed a bank but didn't steal anything. Cat and mouse ensues, Seven style, until we figure out the truth that's been telegraphed since the very beginning. (And trust me, everything you need to fill in the pieces can be found in the last two paragraphs.)

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels Review

Good
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels has been described as the British Pulp Fiction, and on the surface, that would seem like an accurate depiction. It's got the usual cross-section of characters with witty tongues involved in varied illegal activities, that get themselves into very peculiar situations in which no one really survives unscathed. Nonetheless, the film seems to be missing something that characterized its predecessor. And right now, you're getting the feeling that I'm about to quickly file Lock, Stock as another Tarantino homage/copy-cat crime, but that's not quite it either.

Lock, Stockis in fact, probably the best film since Pulp Fiction in which there are no really good guys. Pulp Fiction, Lock, Stockbegins with what would seem to be a simple story, that quickly careens out of control. In this case, four buddies; Tom, Eddie, Bacon, and Soap, pool their money together to back can't lose Eddie at an unbeknownst-to-them rigged game of cards. Of course they get fleeced, and end up in heavy debt to the local heavy. What follows is a madcap plan to recoup the money by intercepting a heist Eddie has fortuitously discovered his neighbor is carrying out. The interrelation of the problems with the original heist, along with the interception of it by Eddie's gang, and a couple of other local illegal activities result in a frantic circle of destruction.

London Review

Terrible
There are basic things that constitute a successful script by Hollywood standards. Remember, I said successful, not good or terrible, just successful. The main character must go through certain actions and must change is the most important. Also, the supporting characters must help him get through the action and eventually, have a part in the change. By these standards, London is almost a successful Hollywood script (there is a serious lack of action). But what comes as a surprise, is that a bad script is the least of director Hunter Richards' problems.

It's a cold night in Manhattan when Syd (Chris Evans) decides to attend the going-away party of ex-girlfriend London (Jessica Biel) in the large loft of a friend (Isla Fisher, completely wasted). Before getting to the party, Syd stops to see his bartender friend, Mallory (Joy Bryant), and meets up with Bateman (Jason Statham), a man with a serious amount of cocaine but who refuses to be called a dealer. With Bateman and drugs in tow, Syd hits the party, doing more drugs and doing more alcohol that Hemingway, Carver and Sid Vicious combined. Bateman and Syd hole up in the bathroom talking about everything from S&M to the Almighty, and eventually Syd gets up the guts to talk to London.

Cellular Review

Weak

"Cellular" has all the earmarks of a genuinely smart thriller rewritten by a studio-lapdog script doctor who was told it didn't have enough car chases and comic relief.

As originally conceived by Larry Cohen ("Phone Booth"), the film makes cunning use of the titular technology in its plot that follows an aimless beach dude (utterly bland buff-boy Chris Evans) whose cell phone is on the receiving end of a desperate call for help from a kidnapped woman (Kim Basinger). By tap-tap-tapping together the wires of a smashed old rotary phone, she's managed to dial his number at random from the attic where she's being held.

Disbelieving at first, Evans ("Not Another Teen Movie") is soon robbing a cell phone store for a charger (his battery is low) and stealing cars to drive like Andretti through downtown Los Angeles, trying to beat the bad guys to Basinger's son and husband (it's him they're really after) so he can save the day.
