Jay Leno

Jimmy Kimmel hasn't always been a fan of fellow talk-show host Jay Leno, but he just could not deny the remarkable 20 year run his competitor has had at No.1.

Just hours before Leno will air his final episode of his NBC late-night talk show, Kimmel tweeted, "Issues aside, 20 years at #1 is a remarkable achievement. Congratulations and best wishes to @jayleno on an incredible run."

But given the murky history between the pair, will Leno appreciate his remark?

Jimmy Fallon Succeding Jay Leno On "Tonight" With A-List Line-Up

Jimmy Fallon Jay Leno

As Jay Leno’s reign over the Tonight Show comes to an end and Jimmy Fallon’s is just about to begin, the first and final guests have been announced. Basically, both hosts are going to make their first/last nights memorable with an A-list roster of guests. Here's the roundup, courtesy of TV Guide.

Jimmy Fallon, Primetime Emmy Awards
Fallon will take the torch from his predecessor on February 17.

Leno’s victory lap will include Betty White on Monday, February 3rd followed by Leno’s successor, Jimmy Fallon. Maybe that will ease the transition. Matthew McConaughey, on a break from his current awards show tour, will pop by on Tuesday. That night will feature a couple of seasoned Tonight Show vets – Charles Barkley will make it his 23rd Tonight appearance, and Lyle Lovett will perform on the show for the 17th time. Sounds like nostalgia will rule the night.

Jimmy Fallon Resumes 60 Years Of Tradition In Trailer For 'The Tonight Show' [Watch]

Jimmy Fallon Jay Leno Seth Meyers Conan O'Brien

Jimmy Fallon's reign as host of Late Night has come to a timely finish and after the comic aired the compilation special The Best of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Sunday, 5 December, night it was very much the beginning of the end. Not to worry though, as the final bow from Fallon on the Late Show came with a friendly reminder that Fallon will be back in even bigger shoes to walk in very soon.

Jimmy Fallon
Fallon seems like the best man for the job

As the trailer (watch below) points out, Fallon is moving on to continue 60 years of television tradition when he replaces Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show next month, and the trailer doesn't toy around with how important the gig is for Fallon. Featuring clips of every Tonight Show host to fall before him, from Jack Paar, Carnac the Magnificent (and Johnny Carson in normal attire), a very young Jay Leno, Steve Allen and even Conan O'Brien, the emphasis on what Fallon faces isn't sugarcoated. After all, we don't want another Conan-fiasco again do we?

Selma Blair Fired From Anger Management? Charlie Sheen Says NO!

Charlie Sheen Jay Leno Selma Blair

Charlie Sheen has denied that a rift between himself and actress Selma Blair led to her being fired from hit FX show Anger Management. In June, it was confirmed that Blair was leaving the sitcom though reports suggested she had grown tired of Sheen's erratic behaviour on set.

Fast-forward to last night's (12 Sept.) Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Sheen - whose no stranger to controversy - had a very different story to tell. When the subject of Selma came up, he told Leno that her character was written out of the show because it was moving in a different direction.

"One of our primary characters, Selma Blair, who played Kate, was written out because [the show] was not about our relationship, and the problem was too many people were still excited about the Two and a Half [Men] character and thinking the Anger Management character was a little dull," Sheen explained.

Kristin Chenoweth's Takes A Dig At Anthony Weiner With "Popular" Spoofy Leno

Kristin Chenoweth Jay Leno

New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner has a lot of critics, but Kristin Chenoweth proved to be one of the wittiest last night. The Wicked performer sang a special version of 'Popular', aimed directly at Weiner’s social media image (among other things) on Jay Leno last night (Thursday, July 30). Some of the tamer lyrics go: “Don’t be offended by my frank analysis/Think of it as social media dialysis.” As for the overall message, it’s stated right in the song: “You wanna be the mayor? Stop acting like a big old w***e.”

Ashton Kutcher Was Too Busy To Meet Apple's Steve Jobs

Ashton Kutcher Steve Jobs Jay Leno

Jobs, the Steve Jobs biopic, has been a long time in the making with its release date continually pushed back to August 2013. Ashton Kutcher landed the titular role and will play the co-founder of tech company Apple who died due to pancreatic cancer in 2011, aged 56. The movie's narrative will chart the story of Steve Jobs' ascension from college dropout into one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of the 20th century, who brought products such as the iPod and iPhone to market domination. If you haven't seen the uncanny image of Jobs' and Kutcher's faces together, you can find it here courtesy of Digital Spy.

In an interview with host Jay Leno on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Kutcher discussed his regret that he didn't take up the opportunity to meet the Apple boss before his death, saying "I had an opportunity to meet him about six months before he passed away and I was working that day and couldn't go. In hindsight, I look back and think 'I had an opportunity to meet the Leonardo da Vinci of our generation' and I missed it. That really affected my decision to take on the role. The day that he died, for me it was almost like, I hear people talking about they knew where they were the day Kennedy died. For me I'll never forget the moment I heard he died."

Shia LaBeouf's NSA Surveillance Claims Proven Correct

Shia LaBeouf Jay Leno

Shia LaBeouf's NSA worries were essentially proved correct over the weekend as further details emerged of technology giants' co-operation with US spy agencies. Apple, Facebook and Google issued strongly-worded denials that they had 'knowingly' participated in a scheme with the National Security Agency, providing emails, conversations, documents, photos and other materials from agents.

29-year-old former technical assistant to the CIA Edward Snowden is the individual responsible for leaking one of the most significant cover-ups in US political history, though was Hollywood star Shia LaBeouf the first to publically air his fears of the NSA on a mass scale? During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2008, LaBeouf - the star of the Transformers movies - told the American public that "one in five phone calls which you make are recorded, and logged."

"I laughed at him [FBI agent who told Shia about the surveillance], and then he played back a phone conversation I had had two years prior to joining the picture [Eagle Eye]... And it was one of those 'What are you wearing?' kind of things."

Jay Leno Sticks It To NBC With Tonight Show Jokes

Jay Leno Jimmy Fallon

If Jay Leno is being ousted from The Tonight Show, with Jimmy Fallon replacing him, then he’s not going down without a fight. Maybe not a fight, but he’s certainly not going down without a few snide jokes.

So, the jokes. He started with: “Doctors in Canada were shocked after pulling a three-inch knife blade from the back of a 32-year old man. The knife had been in there for three years! Imagine that, the guy had a knife in his back for three years. He must’ve worked at NBC too. I was stunned by that.” And the second: “Have you heard about this alleged feud that I’m having with NBC? I think it’s going to be OK. This is real: I had dinner last night with a bunch of NBC executives. To make it up to me, what they did, they are sending my wife and I on an all expenses paid Carnival cruise. How about that? So it looks like it’s going to be OK. Fantastic!"

Leno Won't Leave NBC Without A Fight. Or At Least A Bit Of Sarcasm

Jay Leno Jimmy Fallon

After rumours that NBC was planning to dump late night host Jay Leno in favor of Jimmy Fallon next year, the veteran hasn’t taken it lightly, to say the least.

Ever since NBC made the confusing announcement (confusing because Leno is currently the network’s highest performer in ratings) the Tonight Show host has been slipping subtle (or not quite) jabs at NBC execs into his monologues. During a taping of the show yesterday, he directed not one, but two quips at NBC. First was the obvious strike: “Doctors in Canada were shocked after pulling a three-inch knife blade from the back of a 32-year old man. The knife had been in there for three years! Imagine that, the guy had a knife in his back for three years. He must’ve worked at NBC too. I was stunned by that.”

Ouch! We don’t know if the execs caught that one, but it certainly lets you know where Leno’s mind is. Later, he went for a milder approach: “Have you heard about this alleged feud that I’m having with NBC? I think it’s going to be OK. This is real: I had dinner last night with a bunch of NBC executives. To make it up to me, what they did, they are sending my wife and I on an all expenses paid Carnival cruise. How about that? So it looks like it’s going to be OK. Fantastic!”

Howard Stern Slams 'Insulting' Claims He's Taking Jimmy Fallon's Job

Howard Stern Jimmy Fallon Jay Leno

Howard Stern has reacted explosively to rumors he is set to take over from Jimmy Fallon in the late night slot on NBC. A New York Post report claimed that network executives are "grooming" the shock jock for the 12.3am time slot, should Fallon take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno, whose contract is up in 2014.

However, Stern - the highest paid entertainer in radio - said on his show, "First of all, what an insult. Like, all the years of my career. I'm like, the biggest guy in radio. I've done film. I've done television. I mean, they act like I'm some kind of f--king beginner or something. Maybe if I'm really nice to NBC they'll let me take over Carson Daly's show at like 2 o'clock in the morning," Stern sarcastically quipped.

The comments appear to suggest there's absolutely no chance Stern will be replacing Fallon, though it was considered a surprise when he agreed to be a judge on America's Got Talent. Furthermore, the Post quoted his wife Beth as saying, "He is one of the best interviewers out there," when quizzed on the possibility of her husband taking the job.

Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon – Better Get Used To That

Jay Leno Jimmy Fallon

Change. We don’t like change. If we could have it our way, Jay Leno would just be the Tonight Show host forever. Change, though, is inevitable, and change will see Jimmy Fallon host the Tonight Show from 2014, apparently.

Jay Leno Retirement – Was Jay Leno’s Louie Cameo A Cry For Help?

Jay Leno Jimmy Fallon

Jay Leno retirement? We never thought we’d here those words, but here they are. The Hollywood Reporter reported that two high-level industry sources as saying the end is neigh for Leno, and that the 2013-14 television season will be his last.

A Leno rep towed the party line, saying "We do not speculate on rumor," but the words of those sources have got people gossiping. So what will NBC do if their stalwart chat show host departs for a more relaxed lifestyle? Leno appeared on the (SPOILER) last few episodes of Louie, playing himself and bemoaning the life of a chat show host and doing 14 minutes every night. He hinted that he was once the cool hip guy, but he wasn’t any more. Is this how he feels in real life? More importantly, is this what the network think? Reports suggest Jimmy Fallon is the one to replace him, as he’ll pull in the younger viewers. Jay Leno is also very expensive, and NBC are looking to save as much money as possible. “The more time Jimmy Kimmel is in that slot, the more the young audience goes that way, the harder it is for Jimmy [Fallon] to keep that audience,” said THR’s source.

Confirmed: Jimmy Kimmel Really Doesn't Like Jay Leno

Jimmy Kimmel Jay Leno David Letterman

Jimmy Kimmel, whose show is moving to a new 11.35pm time slot, targets rival Jay Leno in a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine. The pair have history: beginning in 1992 when Leno won the Tonight Show job over David Letterman. As a huge fan of the latter host, Kimmel felt the job was stolen away from his hero.

Kimmel explains that years later, Leno courted him with weekly phone calls. He needed the younger host to give up his midnight time slot in order to make his own show happen. In recent years, the Live! host has taken numerous swipes at Leno, including saying "F*** him" during an interview with Bill Carter. In the new "marijuana-enhanced" interview with Rolling Stone, Kimmel said, "Leno hasn't been a good stand-up in 20 years. As a comedian, you can't not have disdain for what he's done. He totally sold out. He was a master chef who opened a Burger King." Leno still performs a stand-up routine at the L.A.-area Comedy and Magic Club every Sunday.

The pair's rivalry is about to intensify more-so, with Kimmel moving to the 11.35pm time slot to join Leno and his hero Letterman. It begins on Tuesday (January 8, 2013) with guests Jennifer Aniston and No Doubt.

Kimmel Slams Leno In Pot-Fuelled Rolling Stone Interview

Jimmy Kimmel Jay Leno David Letterman

Just a few days before his show moves to the coveted 11:35pm ET slot, it has come to light that Jimmy Kimmel slammed Leno in a Rolling Stone interview, the Daily Mail reports. In the interview, during which Kimmel is reportedly smoking blunts with the magazine’s reporter, he gives Jay Leno a hell of a verbal pasting.

“Leno hasn’t been a good stand-up in 20 years,” says Kimmel, who continues “as a comedian, you can’t not have disdain for what he’s done. He totally sold out." Kimmel’s show will go head to head with Jay Leno once it moves time slots but Kimmel reckons’ Leno’s days are pretty much numbered. “Jay Leno is not going to be able to stay in television forever and obviously, Jimmy Fallon is doing a great job, so it makes sense people would talk like this.”

When he was done laying into his rival, though, Kimmel showed his positive side and had nothing but praise for his other talk show rival, David Letterman. Speaking of his childhood idol, he said “If I beat David Letterman in the ratings, does that mean I’m better than Letterman? No f***ing way.” He continued “People are going to compare me and him for years to come — we’re being positioned as the Leno and Letterman of the next round,' Kimmel reportedly said. 'I like it because he’s a very worthy competitor.”
