French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier has presented his final ready-to-wear collection at Paris Fashion Week, in front of a star studded audience. The show was presented in the designer’s typical eccentric style and featured nods towards many of the most famous creations from his 40 year fashion career.

Using a comical beauty-pageant theme, guests were told that a ‘Miss Jean Paul Gaultier’ was be crowned during the show. The honour eventually fell to 26 year old model Coco Rocha, who had previously suffered a unfortunate tumble during the show.

Rocha collected her sash in a nude-coloured dress which featured a cone-shaped bra paying homage to one of Gaultier’s most famous stage designs for Madonna. The model later took to twitter to express her feelings on the day writing, “Walking the @JPGaultier ready-to-wear runway for the very last time was certainly bitter sweet.”

Taking place inside central Paris' Grand Rex cinema the show featured an 80s soundtrack as many more of the designer’s most famous creations were referenced along with his signature stripes. Alongside Rocha, top models Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls and Izabel Goulart also walked the runway, while Catherine Deneuve and Boy George were among the celebrities in attendance.

Gaultier only announced his decision to end his ready-to-wear collections two weeks ago, he will now focus solely on couture creations. Earlier this month he told industry journal Women's Wear Daily, "For some time, I have found true fulfilment in working on the haute couture, and it allows me to express my creativity and my taste for research and experimentation.”

Adding "Commercial constraints, as well as the frenetic pace of collections, don't leave any freedom, nor the necessary time to find fresh ideas and to innovate. I will be able again to express my creativity without constraints".
