Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Review

Very Good

Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie brings a dark and gritty tone to this larger-than-life franchise. Along with a constant stream of barbed humour, the film has an enjoyably knotted mystery plot and action set-pieces that feel like they're grounded in the real world. It's a terrific shift into earthy believability for a series of movies that has previously indulged in gleefully incoherent narratives and exaggerated explosive chaos.

Right from the start, our hero Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is an outsider. As he searches for a shady assassin (Sean Harris) and his mythical organisation The Syndicate, Ethan's Impossible Mission Force is being dissolved by the US government. CIA Director Hunley (Alec Baldwin) absorbs the IMF team, but tech genius Benji (Simon Pegg) secretly helps Ethan, enlisting Luther (Ving Rhames) and William (Jeremy Renner) as well. Soon, all three are gallivanting from Vienna to Morocco and back to London, as Ethan works with double or perhaps triple agent Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) to prove that The Syndicate exists and stop its nefarious plan.

The film plays out like an edgy James Bond adventure, as Ethan works with a possibly dangerous woman in exotic locations in pursuit of some very shadowy baddies. McQuarrie's script is unusually lucid for this genre, piecing together the various elements expertly, building a genuine sense of tension without ever letting things tip over into overblown silliness. The chase sequences are remarkably rough and unpredictable, avoiding digital trickery to create moments that are jaw-droppingly authentic. As usual, we can tell that Cruise does his own stunts; the opening hanging-from-an-airplane scene is awesome, and a helmet-free motorbike chase looks even more perilous. With the IMF disbanded, it's never quite clear how Ethan funds his one-man operation, but he has a terrific supply of cool gadgets stashed all over Europe.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Trailer

The IMF (Impossible Mission Force) have been active for years, but it's time has run out. The head of the CIA (Alec Baldwin) informs them that they are to be disbanded, but some people can't actually adjust to that sort of thing. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) can't let go, and soon discovers that the IMF is actually needed more than ever. The Syndicate - a Rouge Nation - has been steadily growing over the years, and is seen as an anti-IMF. Now, Hunt and his team must engage in their most impossible mission to date, and fight an enemy which, officially, does not exist.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron Review

Good

Marvel fans will love the action mayhem in this Avengers sequel, but everyone else will vividly feel the fatigue that has descended over this franchise. After the bright spark of originality in last summer's Guardians of the Galaxy, we're back to the same tired formula involving terrific actors battling for screen time in between gratuitous, brutal action sequences that are so digitally animated that they're technically cartoons.

The film opens in the middle of the action as Captain America (Chris Evans) leads Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye (Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner) to recapture an Asgardian sceptre. Tony then discovers that the sceptre could be useful for Ultron, his artificial intelligence project to create a global peacekeeping force. But this goes badly wrong as Ultron (James Spader) springs to life and decides instead to obliterate humanity to make space for his population of smart machines. So the team races from America to Africa, Korea and Eastern Europe, facing off against Ultron and his super-powered twin cohorts Pietro and Wanda (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen), who of course defect to the Avengers. They also get help from a human-computer entity called The Vision (Paul Bettany).

Yes, there are a lot of characters in this film, and writer-director Joss Whedon is exceptionally good at giving each of them something to do, both dramatically and in the thick of the action. These brief moments of humour and emotional depth are what make the movie enjoyable, giving the solid actors some meaty material to play with.

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation Trailer

Despite their countless missions, most of which deemed impossible, the IMF is closing down. Considered an irrelevant and archaic group, the government intends to tie off any loose ends - especially Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). The problem is, Hunt is a veteran, and a tremendous agent of the IMF, and has uncovered a terrifying secret rouge nation, known as The Syndicate. Hunt plans to track down, expose and destroy The Syndicate through any means necessary. To that end, he recruits his old friends and colleges from the IMF, and plans to take the fight to them. Even if the mission is impossible.

Why Were Jennifer Lawrence And Amy Adams Paid Less Than Their Male Co-Stars?

Jennifer Lawrence Amy Adams Bradley Cooper Christian Bale Jeremy Renner

The confidential files just keep on leaking from Sony and the latest batch has ignited some gender-related controversy. Basically, after some financial info was leaked, it was revealed that Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams (whose names you may recognize from, well, every headline this year,) were paid significantly less than their male co-stars for their work in the Oscar-winning film American Hustle.

Jennifer LawrenceAmy Adams
It seems like for Lawrence [l] and Adams [r], the pay gap is still a reality.

Aah, pay gap, how we’ve missed you. Well, not really, because the pay gap never went anywhere, not even within the film industry apparently. The good folks over at The Daily Beast have unearthed a message from a message sent from Andrew Gumpert, President of Business Affairs and Administration for Columbia Pictures to Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Doug Belgrad, President of SPE Motion Picture Group on December 5, 2013, confirming that Adams and Lawrence received roughly 7% of the film’s talent budget each. Meanwhile, co-stars Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Christian Bale got... get ready for this... 9% each. I’m no math expert here, but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t even come out to the often cited statistic of 81 cents to a dollar.

Jeremy Renner Married Sonni Pacheco In Secret!

Jeremy Renner

Congratulations are in order, although they're a little belated! Jeremy Renner, star of The Bourne Legacy, has revealed that he married his girlfriend Sonni Pacheco earlier this year in a super secret ceremony.

Jeremy Renner
Jeremy Renner is an expert secret keeper

He revealed the news in an interview with Capitol File magazine, and Renner clearly learnt a thing or two during his time working on spy films such as Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and The Bourne Legacy, because it kept the union a secret despite being a Hollywood A-Lister who has paparazzi following him wherever he goes. He went on to say this was the reason he decided to keep the news secret, reasoning "I have tried to protect my family’s privacy, my wife’s privacy. I don’t need her to get hammered with my life. Privacy issues are important because I want her to go about her day without being bothered."

Jeremy Renner Appears To Confirm Hawkeye For 'Captain America 3'

Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye will appear in Captain America 3, with the actor confirming the recent speculation during an interview with MTV News. The idea of the Avengers character getting his own solo movie has been floating around Marvel studios for a while now, though it appears he will first join Chris Evans in the third instalment of the blockbuster franchise.

Jeremy RennerJeremy Renner could be in 'Captain America 3'

"I'm happy to be the ensemble," said Renner when asked about the possibility of a solo movie, "I'm not scratching or clawing to do a solo movie by any means." This could partly be down to the fact that Renner is a busy, busy man. As well as his Marvel duties, the actor is also working on the next Mission: Impossible movie with Tom Cruise, as well as a new Bourne film.

Kill The Messenger Trailer

Kill the Messenger follows the real life story of Journalist Gary Webb (Jeremy Renner), as he stumbles upon the story of a lifetime. When Webb hears that the US government was aware of the exportation of drugs to America, he begins following up the story. This, in turn, leads him to uncover a conspiracy where the CIA imported vast amounts of cocaine to sell in the US in order to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army. Webb is then faced with the option to leave the story alone, or continue his investigation and put his career, family and own life at risk.

Marvel's Comic-Con Panel Was Packed With "Ultron" Stars And "Guardians" Footage

Robert Downey Jr Chris Hemsworth Jeremy Renner Cobie Smulders Samuel L Jackson Aaron Johnson Elizabeth Olsen James Spader Josh Brolin

No one is surprised that Marvel had big things prepared for their Comic-Con panel, after all it’s the biggest industry event of the year. Those, who missed out on a seat in Hall H, however, won’t have to wait long for the recaps and news leaks to start pouring in, not including (unfortunately) the long awaited announcement of the actor cast to play Dr. Strange in the upcoming film, HitFix reports.

Robert Downey Jr.
RDJ won't be the (only) star of the show this time.

The panel, which featured the longest superhero lineup of any event ever (we’re guessing here) included Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), James Spader, who will be introduced as Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Josh Brolin, who was announced as the voice of Thanos. And breathe.

The brand new snaps also afford us the opportunity to have a gander at the sequel's main villain, Ultron, who appeared in pre-CGI form as a sinister looking silver robot. Hilariously, the actor performing the movements of the baddie was photographed wearing a thick puffer jacker underneath his high tech silver scales and helmet; a feature that will be digitally erased when it comes to editing.
