Already a global hit, the DreamWorks animated adventure 'Home' opens in America this weekend, featuring a leading couple that would be hard to imagine starring together in a live-action movie: 'The Big Bang Theory' star, Jim Parsons, and global superstar Rihanna.

While 'The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' held on to the top spot on the British box office chart for the third straight week, the real champion last weekend was the riotously enjoyable DreamWorks animated adventure 'Home', which played a series of preview screenings in advance of it opening across the country this weekend.

While 'Second Best' took an impressive £1.4m in its third weekend of play, 'Home''s previews brought in £2.45m on Saturday and Sunday alone. Cleverly marketed as a UK Mother's Day treat, the film drew families to cinemas in huge numbers. This preview income will be added to 'Home''s tally this weekend for next week's box office chart, which means it could beat the second 'Divergent Series' movie, 'Insurgent', to the top of the chart.

Excellent

A sharp script and especially colourful imagery make this animated romp a lot more fun than expected, entertaining grown-ups just as much as the kids. It may be the usual frantic action comedy, but there's an edge to the humour and a continual stream of knowing gags and witty references that keep us laughing. As a result, the busy plot is surprisingly involving, and the action scenes are genuinely thrilling.

It opens in outer space with the Boov, a race of blobby creatures that are only good at one thing: running away from their sworn enemy the Gorg. Their leader Captain Smek (Steve Martin) has selected Earth as their next hiding place, so they swoop in and corral mankind into Happy Humantowns in the Australian Outback while the Boov occupy the cities, hilariously trying to make sense of everything they find there. But a Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons) sticks out from the hive-like community. Friendlier and more curious than he should be, he inadvertently alerts the Gorg to their location. So he goes on the run, meeting up with the human teen girl Tip (Rihanna), who has managed to hide out with her chubby cat Pig and now wants to find her mother (Jennifer Lopez). Pursued by Smek and top cop Kyle (Matt Jones), Oh and Tip must dart around the globe to solve both of their predicaments.

Based on Adam Rex's novel The True Meaning of Smekday, the story is packed with lively twists and turns, and the filmmakers bring it to life with energy, humour and some real emotion. The animators pull out all the stops as they play with outrageous colours and eye-catching action, while the Boov's ability to selectively control gravity adds plenty of scope for additional mayhem. For example, Oh and Tip travel the globe in a car that Oh soups up Back to the Future-style so they can fly to Boov central command in Paris and then on to Australia. These kinds of knowing film references flit across the screen all the way through their adventure.

Do The Big Bang Theory Stars Deserve To Become The Highest Paid Actors?

Jim Parsons Johnny Galecki

It started as a pretty late take on geek culture and ended up thrusting Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg into around 20 million American living rooms every week. Now, filming of the eighth season is delayed because they want more money. A statement from Warner Bros Television (WBTV) said: "Due to ongoing contract negotiations, production on The Big Bang Theory - which was originally scheduled to begin today - has been postponed."

Like many of American’s most popular sitcoms, looking back at the first season after eight or nine have flown by, it’s jarring. In the beginning, The Big Bang Theory didn’t really know what it was: Galecki’s Leonard Hofstadter was pinned as the show’s leading man; fumbling yet handsome, nerdy, lovable. But Parson’s Sheldon would soon take centre stage and thrust Leonard and Penny’s Ross & Rachel plotlines into the background.

'The Big Bang Theory' In Jeopardy As Parsons, Cuoco, Demand Huge Pay Rise

Jim Parsons Kaley Cuoco

Sitcom The Big Bang Theory, the jewel in CBS' crown, is in jeopardy of being cancelled altogether just two weeks before the show is slated to go into production on its upcoming eighth season. The entire original cast is still without contracts and there appears no sign of a deal.

Big Bang TheoryThe Big Bang Theory could earn Warner Bros $3 billion

The situation is almost identical to the one in 2010, when salary negotiations concerning Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar affected the start of production. As Deadline notes, the difference this time is that in 2010, the cast had pre-existing contracts and were obliged to show up for work. This time around, the five stars are no longer contracted to the show. Currently, CBS has only Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik available for work.

The Normal Heart Review

Excellent

It's taken nearly 30 years to bring Larry Kramer's passionate, award-winning play to the screen, but this high-calibre production is a genuine stunner. Even if it was made for television, it carries the gut-punch of a great drama, adding a deeply personal perspective to recent Aids epidemic documentaries like How to Survive a Plague and We Were Here.

At the centre is the outspoken writer Ned (Mark Ruffalo), who has already ruffled feathers in the 1981 New York gay community with his rants against promiscuity. So when a close friend (Jonathan Groff) comes down with what has been labelled "gay cancer", he has a new cause to get angry about. He gathers his buddies including Bruce, Tommy and Mickey (Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons and Joe Mantello) to form an action group, working with Emma (Julia Roberts), a doctor who suspects that the disease is sexually transmitted. But the community isn't willing to give up its hard-fought sexual freedoms. And as Ned falls for Times journalist Felix (Matt Bomer), he becomes increasingly outraged that the government is doing nothing while thousands of people die.

Kramer's script is so intimate and raw that it brings the characters to vivid life, giving each of the actors a show-stopping scene of his or her own. Ruffalo's complex and remarkably transparent performance holds everything together beautifully. Ned's relationships and confrontations all pack a powerful punch, from the romantic scenes with Bomer's lively Felix to darker strain with his brother (Alfred Molina) or an all-out battle with a politician (Corey Stoll). And Roberts gets some pungent scenes of her own, most notably a fiery rant against a room full of callous congressmen.

The Big Bang Theory Will Hit The Magic 10 As CBS Orders 3 More Seasons

For a show to get a pilot is amazing. For it to get picked up, that’s a stunning achievement. A second season is what dreams are made of for writers and actors alike. But to go 10 seasons is utopia. That’s exactly what “The Big Bang Theory” – which started back in 2007 (can you believe it?) – has done as CBS order a further three seasons.
