Chong is best known for her role on 24: Live Another Day - she also appeared in Madonna's directorial film début W.E and British TV series Monroe. Her casting follows the news that two unknowns have joined the cast: Crystal Clarke and Pip Anderson.

Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, said: “The Star Wars universe has always been about discovering and nurturing young talent and in casting Episode VII we wanted to remain absolutely faithful to this tradition. We are delighted that so many travelled to see us at the open casting calls and that we have been able to make Crystal and Pip a part of the film.”

Veteran Star Wars fans will remember the emergence of Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher who joined the franchise as unknown actors only to become household names by portraying two of creator George Lucas’ most iconic characters: Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.

On a recent visit to the set, writer and director Kevin Smith was moved to tears, and while he wasn’t supposed to release any information on what he saw, he wasn’t about to hang his fellow Star Wars fans out to dry. "I saw uniforms, I saw artillery that I haven't seen since I was a kid. I saw them shooting an actual sequence in a set that is real - I walked across the set, there were explosions - and it looked like a shot right out of a f**king Star Wars movie,” he said.

"[Abrams is] building a tactile world, a world you can touch. And he's replicating it with all the love of somebody that has the world's greatest collection of Star Wars figures,” he continued.
