Jk Rowling has announced that her Harry Potter stage play The Cursed Child will open in London's West End next year. The author said the show would tell the "untold part" of the boy wizard's story including the story of his murdered parents.

The prequel will run at the Palace Theatre in the summer of 2016 with tickets on sale this autumn. Rowling made the announcement on Friday to coincide with the 18th anniversary of when her debut book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was first published in the UK.

However, Rowling remained tight-lipped regarding the plot of the play, saying she did not "want to say too much more, because I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans."

"To answer one inevitable (and reasonable!) question - why isn't Cursed Child a new novel? I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story."

Though the new story has not been written by the Potter author, it is a collaboration between herself, the writer Jack Thorne - who previously adapted Let The Right One In for the stage - and John Tiffany, who will direct the play.

"Re Harry Potter, can't say anything, other than playing in @jk_rowling's sandpit is the greatest honour & the greatest fun," tweeted Thorne, who previously worked on This Is England 88.

Further tickets details will be announced in summer 2015. Fans keep an eye on the show's official website for news.
