With a shiny Lifetime Achievement Award proudly atop her mantlepiece, Joanna Lumley has decide to give back even more by delivering some rather fabulous (you might even say absolutely fabulous) new about the big screen adaption of the hit comedy series Absolutely Fabulous.
Speaking behind the scenes at the NTAs Lumley, who plays Patsy - the drink-addled, chain smoking magazine editor, let us in on some of her future plans, which most definitely include her taking up her role as Patsy for any future Ab Fab projects, including the long awaited movie adaption. Although the idea of a musical film version of the show seemed quizzical to the veteran actress, she lamented that she'd be down for it no matter what, saying, "I'm obviously up for that. I'm obviously a very good singer," before adding, "Nobody's going to play Patsy when I'm alive! I do mean that, I do mean that darling, because it could get savage."
Lumley hasn't been all cheer and musicals of late though, and has heeded a very appropriate warning to 'laddish' women who are giving her over-the-top Patsy character a run for her money. Earlier this week, speaking to The Mirror, Lumley warned women of the dangers of the binge drinking culture gripping Britain at the moment, not just on their health but on their overall safety and how they are perceived. he admitted her own detest of the character she plays on the BBC show and discussed her despair at seeing hordes of scantily clad women being “sick in the gutter” across town and city centres at night. She issued this warning to the main offenders, saying: “Don’t look like trash, don’t get drunk, don’t be sick down your front, don’t break your heels and stagger about in the wrong clothes at midnight. This is bad. It’s not me being a snob. It’s not me being an old woman talking to young women. It’s just standard practice for how our species should behave.”
