There’s one sure way to flatter a celebrity and that’s by naming something after them. Usually it’s a theatre, a library or an education centre; it’s not normally a hurricane. Unfortunately for actor Joaquin Phoenix, the internet has now created a series of memes and jokes surrounding the hurricane ‘named’ after the actor.

The hurricane is actually just named Hurricane Joaquin. After the news broke that Hurricane Joaquin was promoted to a category four hurricane on Thursday (1st October), the internet seized on the storm’s name and created a series of memes and jokes featuring pictures and videos of the 40-year-old Irrational Man actor.

The majority of the memes feature Phoenix’s face superimposed over weather maps including some of Phoenix’s more windswept appearances (remember the bizarre beard he grew back in 2009).

Another Twitter user pointed out that Phoenix’s siblings – Rain and River - have more appropriate weather and element style names yet it is Phoenix who the hurricane has been ‘named’ after.

Another user also added a picture of Phoenix, as the Emperor Commodus in Gladiator, giving the thumbs down to the hurricane.

As a category four hurricane, Joaquin is classified as “extremely dangerous”. Hurricane Joaquin passed over the Bahamas in the early hours of Thursday morning. It is expected to reach the U.S. East Coast by Sunday. According to the BBC’s report, a number of U.S. states and their citizens have started making preparations. Virginia has declared a state of emergency after flooding earlier this week and the U.S. government is tracking the hurricane’s progress and preparing emergency measures.
