The British star, who appeared in a BBC radio production of Leo Tolstoy's novel War and Peace last year (15), picked up the Outstanding Contribution Award at the ceremony, which was held at the BBC's Radio Theatre venue on Sunday (31Jan16).

"I like working in radio drama because one is using what is fast becoming the actors' forgotten weapon - the voice," Hurt tells the Press Association.

Another British acting veteran, Carry On star June Whitfield, was also honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at Sunday's ceremony.

Last year (Oct15), Alien star Hurt revealed he had been given the all-clear after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
