The reaction to this week's Oscar nominations was a loud one, because Academy voters played it so safe in a year when films expanded to explore a diverse array of themes. Throughout 2014, actors and filmmakers bravely took on big challenges, and many were recognised with nominations. But critics have been quick to point out that all of the acting and directing nominees are white, and #OscarsSoWhite was the trending hashtag on Twitter.

It has been said over and over, but 2013 truly is the year of the comeback. Justin Timberlake has been going all out on his return to music and having unveiled the first track of his new album, The 20/20 Experience, 'Suit and Tie' with Jay Z, his musical resurrection was nothing short of a revelation. Continuing to keep up the momentum JT will be headlining London's Wireless Festival in the Queen's Olympic Park this summer, along with Jay.

As the Guardian reports, the prior venue for the urban festival - Hyde Park - had suffered with noise complaints. At the Queen's Olympic Park (where the Olympics were held), there's few more appropriately grand locales for the festival. If you were excited about the headliners, the rest of the acts will delight you too; Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Emeli Sandé. Snoop Dogg, John Legend, Calvin Harris, Dj Fresh and Rita Ora, are just the tip of the iceberg.

With such great acts, there's a price to go with it. For two days you'll be paying £110, or £57.50 for just either the Friday or the Saturday. Solo tours for many of the performers could reach £50 easily, so it's excellent value for money. They go on sale on Friday morning so snap them up while you can.

Bruce Springsteen Is The 2013 Musicares Person Of The Year

Sting, Alabama Shakes, Neil Young, Elton John Mumford & Sons and John Legend all paid tribute to Bruce Springsteen as he was named Musicares Person of the Year for 2013 at last night's pre-Grammy award show.

The event recognises a star's philanthropic work as well as their efforts as an artist, something that "The Boss" - as Springsteen has become known - can't separate. "Whatever philanthropy I've ever done usually involved playing the guitar," he said. "I was going to play the guitar anyway." In attendance were some previous honourees: Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett and Bonnie Raitt. Springsteen is a deserving honoree "because he lives his life in such an exemplary way," Raitt said before the gala. "He's committed to his art. He's a good family man. He's a real inspiration for how to give back. I couldn't fault him in any aspect of his life."

Springsteen said of receiving the award, "It's kind of a freaky experience. This is the huge Italian wedding Patti and I never had. I had one of the loveliest nights of my life ...John Legend made me sound like Gershwin. Neil Young made me sound like the Sex Pistols. What a night." He also talked about the power and magic of music, adding, "The Taliban will never win, not now or ever, by banning music and dancing. The minute you do that, you label yourself a tyrant and your cruel days are numbered."

Quentin Tarantino - Django Unchained: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Album Review

Well, this is the soundtrack to a western, but it's also the soundtrack to the bloody new vision of Quentin Tarantino so while it hints at it, it's not exactly the most classical collection of dusty old desert songs you could imagine. It's a soundtrack that packs just as many punches as his movie and brands those wincingly visceral scenes into your mind as if it was an 'r' on Jamie Foxx's face.

Django Unchained: Soundtrack Album Review

From Ennio Morricone to Rick Ross it's a thrilling OST that somehow manages to modernise the western without completely ruining it in the process, I mean perhaps Rick Ross out of context is a little jarring, but John Legend's 'Who Did That to You?' is the smarmy second gun in Foxx's hand after you think he's all out of bullets. It's drawling guitar line wails with a lone gunman swagger as Legend's R&B vocals cry out with an over the top pulp. This more than any other song on the soundtrack encapsulates your thoughts of not what a Tarantino western is, but what it should be.

It's difficult to pick out tracks here that are better than the rest, they're all good, but this isn't a record in the usual sense, it's a soundtrack, obviously, and therefore it's about the feeling it brings with it and Tarantino's choices of tracks like 'Freedom' ring with the authenticity of classic slavery hymnals. It's a record that feels as sadistic and redemptive as the tale is on screen and it's a testament to these musicians that you don't need to see the film to understand the tale. It's spliced with some of the finest cuts of dialogue and death from the movie which add an extra layer of texture to this inspired collection and mean that you get to hear Christoph Waltz say, 'five thousand dollar n***a, that's practically my middle name' as much as you bloody well please.

Quentin Tarantino Opens Up On Original Score For Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino John Legend Rick Ross Jamie Foxx

Quentin Tarantino's new movie, Django Unchained, which scored well both with the critics and financially on its Christmas day release, features an original composition from Rick Ross and John Legend.

Tarantino is famous for the music in his films, while Django should be no different, this is the first time that he's employed tracks written specifically for his work. "[I've] never really asked an artist to write a composition for any of my movies because I don't know if I'm going to like it, and even if I do like it, I don't know if it will work with one of my films," Tarantino explained to MTV News during a recent press event for the film, "I never wanted to put myself in that embarrassing situation."

So how did 9-time Grammy award-winning artist John Legend manage to convince the auteur that his tunes were right for the film? He went retro and sent him a cassette tape. Not a cd, USB flash drive, or an email - a cassette tape. "He had heard about the movie," Tarantino explained. "I think he had seen the commercial or something, and he liked the idea of what the movie was about so he wrote a song, not having read the script, he wrote a song that he thought could fit into what he thought I was trying to do and put it on cassette tape. I don't know if I would have actually listened to it if he hadn't have put it on a cassette tape. Well, I might have listened to a CD. If he had sent [a flash drive] to me, that would have sat in my hotel room never to be listened to."

'Demand A Plan' PSA: Hollywood's Biggest Stars Unite Against Gun Violence

On the same day that the NRA calls for there to be armed guards at all schools, celebrities have come together to film a campaign video for 'Demand a Plan', which asks the government to do just that- come up with a plan to tackle the national epidemic of gun violence. The plan that the NRA offers is definitely not the answer that these celebs are after.

As stars, including Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and John Legend, among many more, speak the names of cities, and the names of places, they also ask their core question: How many more? Fundamentally, there can't be any more, enough is enough. And this is precisely why they are demanding a plan. The video- which you can see below- is linked to the Demand a Plan website, the homepage of which has three main requests:

1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America

John Legend Reflects On Django Unchained Soundtrack

John Legend

With Django Unchained featuring a soundtrack including the likes of John Legend, Ennio Morricone, Tupac and James Brown, there’s as much hype about its music as there is the actual film itself.

Legend sat down with Rolling Stone to describe the track that he’s contributed to, a soulful number called ‘What He Did To You’. "I had been reading about the film, very early on when it was in development, and I knew I wanted to write something for it," Legend told the publication. "But he didn't ask me to write it.” Expanding on the themes of the song, he commented "It's about retribution, it's about avenging your lover's honor, it's about a desire to find your love and exact retribution on whoever harmed her, which obviously fits perfectly with the plot of Django."

The film’s issues of slavery and racism are deeply ingrained in the current generation of black Americans, and Legend is no different; much of his reading at University concerned African American history, and he saw a chance to take that and pin it to the Django soundtrack. "A lot of my undergrad studies were about reading about American history and African American history, and America's long struggle with racism and how we deal with race and how important that struggle has been to the forming of this country," he said, a University of Pennsylvania grad. "These are things that I have thought about for years."

A mixed week for US albums releases; old classics given an airing, a major movie soundtrack launched and hip-hop arTIsts new and old having a stab at chart success. Currently, the top of the US album chart is dominated by Taylor Swift, who’s back at the top with Red, Wiz Khalifa, riding high at number two with O.N.F.C. and Rod Stewart’s festive compilation album, Merry Christmas, Baby.

Eric Clapton’s Slowhand gets a 35th anniversary reissue, having been remastered from the original “1/4 tape. There are four album session outtakes, entitled ‘Looking at the Rain,’ ‘Alberta,’ ‘Greyhound Bus,’ and ‘Stars, Strays and Ashtrays.’ A second disc contains a live performance at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, from April 27, 1977.

One for the completists, then – and more a case of Clapton’s record label rubbing their hands in glee at a cash in, than any real significant moment in his career. The re-release of Slowhand has hardly set the music press alight and we probably don’t need to fetch any fire blankets for the albums chart, either.

Neil Young And Foo Fighters Lead Central Park Poverty Awareness Concert

Neil Young Foo Fighters Black Keys John Legend Band Of Horses Dave Grohl John Lennon

Neil Young and Foo Fighters were among the star attractions at Saturday night’s Global Citizen Festival in Central Park. The concert was held in order to raise awareness about issues surrounding poverty and according to the Washington Post, organisers “used an innovative approach to ticket distribution so that many concert-goers were forced to learn about an array of global problems in order to get a ticket.”

Anyone wanting to attend the concert, which also featured performances from the Black Keys, John Legend and Band Of Horses, had to register for tickets at globalcitizen.org. They earned ‘points’ towards a ticket for every poverty-related video they watched, of piece of information that they read. Around 71,000 people signed up for tickets and 60,000 of those crowded into Central Park for the unique event. The bands played for a round an hour each and were interspersed with guest speakers talking about global poverty issues.

Neil Young was joined, for his set, by Dave Grohl and members of the Black Keys, for a rendition of his classic track ‘Rockin’ In The Free World.’ When Foo Fighters played their own set, Grohl told the audience “Feels good to be here.” John Legend made a “surprise appearance,” playing John Lennon’s ‘Imagine,’ just a short way from where Lennon used to live. The concert had been deliberately scheduled to coincide with the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this month, to increase public consciousness of the presence of poverty.

John Legend, Wake Up! Album Review

There's a right way and a wrong way to cover bona fide classics. The wrong way involves politely and tastefully recreating the originals note by note, dutifully paying tribute to the song while tacitly suggesting that it is a dead, inert form, something so holy that it should not be changed or reinterpreted by its disciples, only ritually worshipped. The right way, as modelled here by John Legend and The Roots, is to treat the songs like living, breathing things, to play them with the passion and intensity with which they were first performed, and to play with them in order to bring out the elements that make them important and relevant pieces of music in 2010. Wake Up! collects eleven pulsating covers of politicised soul and funk songs from the sixties and seventies, plus one original composition. It demonstrates that those songs have a message which is just as relevant today as it was when they were first recorded, and an emotional force which is just as powerful.
