Wait, what? John Oliver defended the IRS on Last Week Tonight. Kind of looks wrong doesn't it? But, yep, the British comedian used his monologue on Sunday's show to explain why we shouldn't be so hard on the company, which he dubbed "the anus of our country."

"I know that sounds unappealing," he warned, "But I promise if you stay to the end of this there'll be a very sexy reward."

"I'm going to attempt the impossible," he said. "I'm going to try and make you feel a small amount of sympathy for the IRS."

As Oliver pointed out - there's plenty to hate about it, not least the fact that there has been 579 changes in the tax code this past year. Oliver noted that the only thing that should change that quickly is Bill Cosby's Wikipedia page. Ouch.

Still, the comedian argued that "blaming the IRS because you hate paying your taxes is like slapping your checkout clerk because the price of eggs has gone up. It's not her fault. She's just trying to help you get out of the store."

Going back to the anus analogy, Oliver said: "It's nobody's favorite part, but you need that thing working properly or everything goes to shit real quick."

To drive home the point, Oliver brought out crooner Michael Bolton to sing a song of support for the IRS. "You never miss your anus 'til it's gone," sang Bolton, beautifully.
