A three-day Johnny Cash and JUNE CARTER CASH memorabilia auction in New York has raised almost $4 million (GBP2.2 million) for the country legends' estate.

The 700-plus items up for sale were expected to fetch $1.5 million (GBP833,300).

A 1986 Grammy that went under the hammer for a final total of $187,200 (GBP104,000) on Wednesday (15SEP04) was the most expensive item sold at the SOTHEBY'S auction.

Other top bids included $131,200 (GBP72,890) for a custom-made GRAMMER model guitar and a black MARTIN guitar.

Most items sold for at least three times their estimate.
