Johnny Depp is almost unrecognisable in the trailer for Black Mass. The 51-year actor plays the notorious American gangster, Whitey Bulger, in the upcoming film. The first official trailer was released on Thursday (23rd April). It shows Depp, with a receding hairline and incredibly piercing blue eyes, intimidating a colleague over dinner. Depp's intimidating voice becomes a voice over as other scenes from the movie, including Depp wielding a gun and dumping a dead body, cut in.

Black Mass is based on true events and Bulger, who is now incarcerated in a state prison in Arizona, was once one of the FBI's most wanted criminals. He was on the run for a number of years before he was finally apprehended in 2011. In 2013, after a lengthy trial, Bulger was charged with multiple offences including murder and racketeering.

The film, based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill, follows both Bulger's life story and that of his law abiding brother, William 'Billy' Bulger. Billy became a successful lawyer and politician, eventually becoming Governor of Massachusetts.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Billy. The role was initially intended for Guy Pearce but he was forced to drop out of the movie because of scheduling clashes. Joel Edgerton also stars as corrupt FBI agent John Connelly. Black Mass also stars Kevin Bacon, Sienna Miller, Jesse Plemons, Dakota Johnson and Rory Cochrane

Black Mass is released in the US on 18th September and in the UK on 25th September 2015.
