Jon Hamm Puts Himself Forward To Play Batman

Jon Hamm

With Ben Affleck widely reported to be about to quit his role as Batman, Jon Hamm has been quick to position himself as his successor as The Caped Crusader in the DC Extended Universe.

Warner Bros. is likely to see two of its highest profile actors exiting the DC Extended Universe, with yesterday’s widely seen reports that Henry Cavill will no longer be playing Superman and recent reports indicating that the studio was on the verge of jettisoning Affleck as Batman too.

So, with The Dark Knight needing to rise again, former ‘Mad Men’ star Hamm has suggested himself as a possible casting choice in a new interview for the In Depth series.

The stellar cast for Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's 'Good Omens' has been fleshed out even more this week, with Amazon revealing that Jon Hamm would be joining the series in the role of the archangel Gabriel. Starring alongside David Tennant and Michael Sheen - who will be playing lead characters Crowley and Aziraphale respectively - it's clear that everything is being put into this show to ensure it's a success.

Baby Driver Review

Very Good

Wildly energetic and so cool it hurts, this action movie has been put together in the style of a colourful movie musical, but with the songs playing in the background. Everything is choreographed to the tunes, as the cars veer across the road dodging bullets fired in sync to the rhythm. It's pure candy for the eyes and ears, impeccably staged by writer-director Edgar Wright. And we don't mind much that there's not much more to it than that.

The title refers to Baby (Ansel Elgort), a young man who doesn't talk much. Hiding behind sunglasses and earbuds, he's an expert driver raised by his deaf foster dad (C.J. Jones) after his parents died in, yes, a car crash. He's also in debt to Doc (Kevin Spacey) a criminal mastermind who orchestrates elaborate heists with a variety of low-life goons, all with Baby at the wheel. And things are looking up for Baby when he falls for diner waitress Debora (Lily James) just as he pays off his debt to Doc. But first he has to do one last job, working this time with the loved-up Buddy and Darling (Jon Hamm and Eliza Gonzalez) and the unpredictable, trigger-happy Bats (Jamie Foxx).

Scenes play to the beat of the songs on Baby's iPod, and Wright adds clever touches everywhere. Shooting in long takes with elaborately planned-out mayhem, the film ricochets from one sequence to the next, looking seriously stylish every step of the way. It quickly becomes clear that even the super-efficient Baby is soon going to be in over his head, which helps us root for him as the carnage escalates. The likeable Elgort has a lot of fun with the role, enjoying Baby's wordless swagger while including a touch of emotion here and there. No one else gets a chance to add much depth to his or her role, but at least Foxx gets to steal his scenes simply because no one has a clue what he might do next.

Minions, the spin-off from the hugely popular Despicable Me films, has surpassed the earnings from the opening weekend of Despicable Me ($56.4 million) but hasn’t quite managed to beat the $142.1 million its sequel made when it was released in 2013. Both films have gone on to make huge profits. Despicable Me earned $543-million worldwide and the second film earned $970.7.

It’s hardly surprising the opening weekend of Minions has been so success. Universal Pictures has used some fairly hard sell tactics to ensure it’s the film everyone’s talking about. With adverts everywhere online and even a seemingly swearing Minions Happy Meal toy available in McDonald’s, it’s been difficult to avoid seeing these little yellow creatures.

'Minions' Offers Freedom To Jon Hamm And Allison Janney

Jon Hamm Allison Janney Pierre Coffin Sandra Bullock Michael Keaton

For the Despicable Me prequel Minions, filmmaker Pierre Coffin had no trouble finding A-list actors to voice characters because so many are fans of the earlier films. And most are looking for the freedom offered by starring in an animated movie.

MinionsVoicing characters is much simpler than performing onscreen

Jon Hamm voices the groovy inventor Herb, married to super-villain Scarlet Overkill (who's voiced by Sandra Bullock). He loved creating an all-new character. "You're not constrained by what you look like or what haircut you're stuck with from whatever thing you just finished filming," he says. "Part of it for me was getting the artist's rendering of the character. I was like, 'Oh wow, that guy looks so cool. I wonder what he sounds like.' And then messing around with voices in your head like a crazy person, or like a child basically. You know, things I do normally in my day-to-day life, like I talk to my dog, I talk to myself. It's really fun and it's completely creative. And when you're working with people who are also incredibly collaborative too, they're just like, 'Go!' So you get to go."
