'Mad Men' Recap Season 7 Episode 3: It's Chilly At The Top

Jon Hamm Christina Hendricks

Poor Don Draper: episode three of the seventh season of the hit HBO series Mad Men saw the philandering advertising genius as drunk and as sad as ever as he was simultaneously pushed away by estranged wife Megan and SC&P, the company where he used to be king. Don's marriage was at breaking point when he received a call from LA informing him that Megan is having trouble dealing with rejection from auditions.

Don tells her to "Stop acting like a lunatic" and reveals that he has been on a forced leave of absence. Upset that Don hasn't been in LA during his time of work, Megan sends him packing, saying "This is the way it ends. It's going to be so much easier for both of us."

'Mad Men' Recap: Everyone Still Hates Valentine's Day

Jon Hamm Elizabeth Moss

Finally, after weeks of doom and gloom, the Mad Men writers stretched their comedic muscles with an Easter weekend episode that will make it into MM history. Not that it starts out that way, mind you. It’s February 13 and, as per tradition, Don Draper starts the day by sleeping in and watching a lot of television and binging on booze – but not too much, of course. He has a meeting, but it’s not until later in the day, so that leaves plenty of time to interrogate Dawn, who comes by mainly to keep him up to date on the goings on at SCP.

Mad Men Still
Don is still boozing, Megan's still a character, sort of.

Meanwhile at SCP, Peggy, ever the workaholic, is asking Stan to hand in some work before the end of the day. Doesn’t seem likely on Valentine’s Day, but you’ve got to admire her for trying. But let’s not forget that Peggy is A. a woman and B. very, very single. Obviously it all blows up in her face. Not only will she not get the work done, but she, along with the viewers has to endure a few painfully awkward minutes of V-Day banter.Needless to say, Ginsberg's crude assessment that Peggy had an evening of "masturb[ating] gloomily" lined up definitely was a new low for Peggy. But the worst is yet to come.

Why Did Nobody Watch The 'Mad Men' Season 7 Premiere?

We're not sure what everyone was watching on Sunday night, but the season seven premiere of Mad Men pulled in disappointing ratings - down 34 per cent, in fact. AMC's signature drama averaged just 2.3 million viewers at 10pm - that's down from 3.4 million who watched the premiere a year ago. It was the lowest premiere for Mad Men since its second season in 2008.

As it did with Breaking Bad, AMC has decided to split the final of Mad Men into two seven-episode runs, with the final set saved for Spring 2015. As the New York Times noted, the numbers may jump when delayed viewing is counted but it still represents a sharp and unusual falloff for a programme considered one of the biggest on U.S television.

Ryan Gosling's was a name that surfaced quickly and it's easy to see why: Gosling has great stage presence and, as we saw in Drive, the ability to flip from calm to guns blazing in mere seconds. What Culture say that the 32 year-old "perfectly fits this more brutal and tortured Batman, not to mention that he possesses the suave playboy looks to serve as the cover story." Mad Men Season 6 Finale Sees Don Draper Finally Crack In A Fit Of Rare Honesty [Recap]

Jon Hamm

As the penultimate season of Mad Men closed on AMC, we left old Don Draper completely disintegrated. While Don, probably one of the best, if morally questionable characters on TV at the moment, has always lived a double life throughout the series, this last episode was when all walls finally collapsed – it’s now time for rehab.

Everything begins at a crucial meeting between the team at Sterling Cooper and Partners and a potential client – Hershey’s Chocolate. Don starts out with his trademark charm and eloquence, painting an idyllic family scene – himself as a young boy, being rewarded with Hershey’s chocolate by his father for doing household chores. “Hershey’s is the currency of affection,” is one line that resonates with story arcs throughout this season and one that has the fictional Hershey execs caught up in Draper’s speech. But then it all starts going south, as Draper’s facade suddenly begins to crumble and he recalls the actual setting of his childhood - He was actually an orphan raised in a whorehouse, he revealed, where, trying to capture the experience of a normal kid, he would eat a Hershey bar he got from one of the girls "who made me go through her john's pockets while they screwed."

The clients are appalled and Don’s career is going down the drain, as his breakdown leads to a mandatory hiatus from the company. This story all began a few episodes ago, when Don was caught cheating on his wife by his teenage daughter. Now, with that relationship breaking down, Don loses any kind of support system. We see him cancel the move to Los Angeles and lie to his wife about it (“The agency decided it.”) which ultimately only leads to her leaving and the series closing with Don Draper’s life and lies in shambles and him broken and alone. Not the most uplifting season finale by far, but it sets the scene nicely for what’s to come in the final season.

Mad Men Episode Recap: Martin Luther King Day Brings Home Truths With It

Jon Hamm

It was a momentous and sombre day for Mad Men’s latest episode, with the show revolving around Martin Luther King day – the day that he was killed to be specific. This was a pretty big issue for Mad Men to address, with past views about the racism of the plot line – which it has perhaps been to a point, given that it’s trying to reflect the divisions of white middle class America and its view of other ethnic groups at the time.

As Hollywood Gossip points out, the episode ‘The Flood’ echoes the season 3 episode The Grown-Ups, which was based around the subtext of the Kennedy assassination, though at that point the backdrop was used as a reminder to the characters in Mad Men that things in America were not as pristine perfect as they’d imagined, while the death of Luther King, and the impact that he had on American society, forces the characters to confront their demons and forcedly removes the barriers that the story lines operate in – that of rich, white, suburban porcelain.

So we’ve got Harry adjusting TV schedules in wake of the assassination, being accused of racism for doing so, while a bizarre advertising man approaches SCDP pitching an ad that plays off the death. Elsewhere, there’s awkward exchanges with the black characters in the show, with Don’s secretary Dawn coming into work when they’d assumed she wouldn’t, while an exchange with a black usher at a cinema also goes wrong. The episode, then, is about the awkwardness of these previously self-contained characters suddenly finding themselves pitched into the bigger picture, beyond their own bickering and arguments.

He has his wife Megan, but is also sleeping with his neighbor’s wife from the floor below his apartment too, not to mention his mistress who he takes out for a lavish wine and dine during the course of the latest episode. However, Megan has big news about a pregnancy and a subsequent miscarriage – something she’s been too afraid to talk to Don about, in a sign of how distant their relationship has become. She makes a tentative effort to talk about having kids in the latest episode, only to be met with half-interest from Don. Just how much longer is she going to keep it quiet?

Don hasn’t been the only one gallivanting round with those he oughtn’t supposed to be with. Pete’s been cheating on his wife by having it off with Brenda from down the street. However, he doesn’t have nearly the intimidation factor that Don does to pull such a sleazy scheme off, and it doesn’t take long for Brenda to let Trudy know about what her husband’s been up to. Peter’s clearly fallen from his roost – will Don be far behind?

Were You One Of The 58,000 Who Watched The Return Of 'Mad Men'?

Jon Hamm Elisabeth Moss

Season six of Mad Men proved to be a hard sell for UK audiences this week, premiering to just 58,000 viewers on Sky Atlantic. Yep, that's just 58,000, in case you thought we meant 580,000, or 5.8 million. Just 58,000. The show, one of the most stylish and absorbing dramas in recent years, pulled in 98,000 fewer viewers than for its fifth season launch on the channel last year - but what does it all mean for Mad Men?

In fairness, the creators of the show shouldn't worry too much. Mad Men hasn't never fared particularly well in the UK, despite appealing to critics and a relatively small but dedicated fan-base. Bought by Sky last year, the show - starring Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss - has slumped in the ratings since it was last available on free-to-air TV. The launch of the fourth series on BBC4 in 2010 pulled in a sizeable audience of 355,000. Despite the small audience for Wednesday's return, it was still nearly triple Sky Atlantic's slot average over the last three months, up a massive 178%. Sky executives often play down the important of overnight ratings, arguing that the purpose of paying the big-bucks for shows like Mad Men is to pull in subscriber numbers.

Jon Hamm For Rolling Stone: Penis Talk

Jon Hamm

Well, folks, you might be over it, the world might be over it, but it isn’t over, because Jon Hamm is on the cover of Rolling Stone, due to hit stands this Friday.

And while there’s a bunch of things the article could have covered – Hamm’s influences, his run on Mad Men, his apparently very inspiring conversations with James Gandolfini (of “The Sopranos” fame), it looks like the piece will once again devolve into that hot button issue of late – Jon Hamm’s privates. Well, to be fair, in the article the Mad Men star actually talks about how unwarranted and intrusive all of the online attention towards his nether regions has been: "Most of it's tongue-in-cheek," he tells contributing editor Josh Eells in his first solo Rolling Stone cover story. "But it is a little rude. It just speaks to a broader freedom that people feel like they have - a prurience."

Jon Hamm is over it. It's time to follow that example.

Matthew Weiner On The Unlikely Success Story Of 'Mad Men'

Jon Hamm

As the Mad Men cast embark on their sixth season together, we get to find out more about the show’s creator – Matthew Weiner.

The small, balding, excitable man, looks outwardly nothing like the handsome commanding Don Draper, played by John Hamm, but the two apparently have one thing in common – the need to control their worlds. It’s not surprising then, that Weiner takes quite a hands on approach to the show. He not only writes most of it, but also co-produces it alongside Scott Hornbacher and directs the final episode of each season.

Considering the success of Mad Men now, it’s hard to imagine that Weiner had any trouble pitching the concept in the beginning, and yet, the creator has told the story of his struggles so many times, that by now it sounds almost like the plot of a cult 90s show. “I got a lot of pity for basically moving to the Internet,” a casually dressed Mr. Weiner said earlier this month, sitting in his narrow office at the Los Angeles Center Studios where “Mad Men” is shot. “People would say, ‘Good luck on A&E,’ and I would have to say, ‘It’s AMC.’ I was an executive producer on ‘The Sopranos’ who went to this no-name network that had never produced a show. And the show had no stars in it. It’s like you were valedictorian and then suddenly you’re going for a semester at sea.”

Mad Men Season 6 Hysteria Heats Up With New Poster

Jon Hamm

Mad Men season 6 will hit TV screens on April in both the U.S and the U.K, but an overnight release of an incredible poster has got people talking about the much-anticipated return of the show over a month early.

The poster is a beautifully designed acrylic affair, made by the 75-year-old British artist Brian Sanders. "Finally," Showrunner Matthew Weiner told the New York Times, "they just looked up the person who had done all these drawings that I really loved, and they said: 'Hey, we’ve got the guy who did them. And he’s still working. His name is Brian Sanders.'" For this Mad Men poster, he used an acrylic technique, which has been used for over 50 years. "It’s a style we refer to over here in England as bubble and streak," Sanders told the New York Times. "I don’t work in that manner now, and I was surprised how quickly it came back, the ability to use it in that particular way." We can see Don Draper in the poster, but there are so many questions upon further examination. Who is holding Don Draper’s hand? Are those police after him and his mystery hand holder? Are they near an airport; is that what the plane represents? We want to know now!

Friends With Kids Review

Excellent
With a hilariously smart script and a terrific cast, this romantic comedy rises far above the pack, engaging us emotionally and intellectually while offering some telling observations on the state of modern relationships.

Jason (Scott) and his best friend Julie (Westfeldt) are a bit horrified when their coupled pals Leslie and Alex (Rudolph and O'Dowd) and Ben and Missy (Hamm and Wiig) have children. So they decide to have a child without the baggage of a relationship, freeing them to find the right person once they're already single parents. Their baby son is adorable, and raising him brings them closer as friends while allowing them to pursue romances with the hot Mary Jane (Fox) and the sexy Kurt (Burns). But no one else is buying it.
