HBO And Jon Stewart Cancel Animated Shorts Project

Jon Stewart HBO

HBO and Jon Stewart have mutually decided to cancel the proposed and much-anticipated ‘animated shorts’ project that had been announced more than a year-and-a-half ago because of technical problems, it has been announced.

The project, first revealed way back in November 2015 shortly after Stewart had signed off from Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’ after presenting it for 16 years, had been vaunted as the next step in Stewart’s career after his late night hosting duties.

“HBO and Jon Stewart have decided not to proceed with a short-form digital animated project,” the network said Wednesday (May 24th), according to the New York Times.

Jon Stewart Crashes 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' With Media-Trump Rant

Jon Stewart Stephen Colbert

An unexpected surprise came on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' this week in the form of Jon Stewart, who crashed the show in a bid to deliver a stern message to the mainstream media regarding their apparent 'break up' with President Donald Trump.

Jon StewartJon Stewart shares his thoughts on the media's 'break up' with Donald Trump

As Stephen Colbert was lamenting the foregoing of the first amendment by Donald Trump at the White House's recent press briefing in regards to the President banning a series of news outlets including CNN, LA Times, New York Times, Politico and BuzzFeed, Jon Stewart appeared from under his table to put his two cents in.

Trevor Noah Provides Commentary On Donald Trump Win: "I Am Very Much Afraid"

Trevor Noah Jon Stewart Donald Trump

There were many reactions throughout the celebrity as Donald Trump swept unexpectedly to victory in Tuesday’s presidential election – but one person (just about) keeping their cool and being funny while doing so was TV host Trevor Noah.

The South African-born comedian hosted ‘The Daily Show’s election night special, and reacted with increasing horror as Trump racked up the electoral college votes and edged ever closer to the White House.

Jon Stewart Tears Down Donald Trump In Stand-Up Tirade

Jon Stewart Donald Trump

Donald Trump was absolutely thrown down by Jon Stewart during his comedy session at the Stand Up for Heroes benefit yesterday. The comedian addressed everything from his remarks to Billy Bush in that leaked recording, to his bitter Twitter feud with the Republican presidential candidate three years ago.

'The Daily Show' host took to the stage at the 10th annual benefit in New York City last night (November 1st 2016) and wasted no time in ripping the potential new president to pieces. He spoke about the scandal Trump was recently involved in, where a recording of him in conversation with Access Hollywood's Billy Bush was released featuring Trump using profane and derogatory remarks about woman - remarks that Trump later dismissed as 'locker room banter'.

Jon Stewart Returns To Describe Donald Trump As A "Man-Baby"

Jon Stewart Donald Trump

Amid the carnage and disbelief of the current Presidential nomination campaign and the rise of Donald Trump, the voice of satirist Jon Stewart has been one that has been badly needed and sorely missed.

However, the former ‘Daily Show’ presenter briefly returned to the political foray having last year handed his show over to new host Trevor Noah, with an interview for former Obama advisor David Axelrod’s podcast on Monday (May 9th) in which he described Trump as a “man-baby”.

Colbert Conquers Death In Comedy Central Finale

Stephen Colbert Jon Stewart

It’s over. It’s done. Colbert is dead. Long live Colbert. The Colbert Report aired its final episode last night – Thursday, December 18. The show died, how it lived, more or less.

Stephen Colbert
What does the future hold for the newly "deathless" Stephen Colbert?

The final episode started off slow, with Colbert not even speaking a word until halfway through the thing. It kicked off with an intro by Jon Stewart, as per tradition, with the Daily Show host eventually tossing the ball to Colbert himself. The recap of recent events fit in quite well with the theme, which was essentially how little things have changed since the Report launched way back in 2005.

Rosewater Trailer

Maziar Bahari is an Iranian-Canadian journalist who embarked on a week long trip to Iran in 2009 in a bid to cover the story of the presidential elections, leaving his pregnant wife behind. He spent his time filming campaigns and students, but still understanding that sometimes he needs to turn the camera off for his own safety. However, when situations got heated and the protests began, he decided to make the brave move in videotaping the chaos; including such situations that could've been compromising to the government. Accused of being a foreign spy, he was later arrested, blindfolded, beaten and mercilessly interrogated, with information even as trivial as his Facebook interests being used against him. Despite the fear and the injustice, however, he got through with an extraordinary ability to focus his mind, laughing his way through his four month imprisonment and knowing deep down that he would be free before long.

Jon Stewart's 'Rosewater' Is Good, But Were We Expecting More?

Jon Stewart Gael Garcia Bernal

Jon Stewart's directorial debut Rosewater premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on Friday (August 27, 2014) and the critics and bloggers were quick off the mark with their reactions.

Based on a real-life incident - which sort of intertwined with Stewart's satirical programme The Daily Show - Rosewater tells the story of Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari (Gael Garcia Bernal) who covered the 2009 elections in his home country for Newsweek before getting detained by the Iranian government following an appearance on Stewart's show.

John Oliver Goes Solo With 'Last Week Tonight', So How Did It Go?

John Oliver Jon Stewart

John Oliver has gotten off the mark with his new solo show Last Week Tonight on HBO, which didn't stray too far from the concept and structure of Jon Stewart's The Daily Show. The reviews were, on the whole, pretty good and Oliver certainly didn't do anything wrong in his first outing.

John OliverJohn Oliver Made A Solid Start to 'Last Week Tonight'

"But what really grabbed me about Last Week Tonight was the long segment in the middle about the upcoming India Election," wrote Darren Franich of Entertainment Weekly, "Oliver chastised the American media for its complete inability to cover the biggest election in human history; but Oliver also managed to come up with a handy rundown of the important facts."

RIP The Best Of Stephen Colbert? Will The Funnyman Change On CBS?

Stephen Colbert David Letterman Jon Stewart

The news that Stephen Colbert would become Letterman’s successor on The Late Show has had time to circulate over the weekend and, by now, anyone who cares has had time to form an opinion. Most online sources seem be taking the change as a good thing. The character Colbert created on Comedy Central could add new life to the Late Show format, which has been going stale for some time now.

Stephen Colbert
Will Colbert's humor survive the transition into network television?

But the naysayers have to ask – what if Colbert doesn’t bring his Comedy Central character with him? Unlike say, Jon Stewart, who would have been the obvious choice for the “Late Show” gig, Stephen Colbert has always played a character on The Colbert Report – a hilarious, well-acted, faux Conservative pundit, who was obviously created just for satire – not actual pop culture critique. That schtick wouldn’t really work on the Late Show format. A few gags here and there are welcome, but Letterman has, for the most part, hosted as Letterman during his 21-year-long tenure.

John Oliver To Unveil "Tonight Show Last Week" On HBO In April

John Oliver Jon Stewart

John Oliver’s new HBO show has finally been made official with the announcement of a title and a release date. Oliver fans rejoice! The former “Daily Show” correspondent will begin “The Tonight Show Last Week With John Oliver” (bit of a mouthful) on April 27 at 11 p.m. The show will take a satirical look at the biggest news headlines of the week, not unlike Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” format.

John Oliver, Comedy Awards
Oliver wants his show to have a distinct voice, different from that of "The Daily Show".

This is as much as Oliver and HBO have revealed at this point, meaning that eager viewers will have to wait for the official premiere to find out exactly how Oliver’s format will differ. The host didn’t exactly make it clear during his appearance in front of the Television Critics’ Association in January.

Stephen Colbert Won't Stop Going On About That Emmy Win

Stephen Colbert Jon Stewart

Perhaps the best thing about Stephen Colbert’s win – for Colbert, anyway – is that he knocked Jon Stewart off his perch. And what a perch it was: 10 years running he won the variety show category, which is probably why his adversary won’t shut the hell up about it.

Stephen ColbertColbert is very much drinking it in

And what better place to boast to the nines than your own show, right? Firstly, he was modest enough to admit that he’d made a "verbal gaffe" when he accepted the Emmy. (USA Today)

For Jon Stewart, The Toronto Film Festival Is Another Day's Work

Jon Stewart John Oliver

For some, the Toronto Film Festival is a great experience; they meet loads of people and see a bunch of great movies. For others, the event means plenty of review writing, lots of travel and not much sleep.

Jon StewartJon Stewart wields an Emmy

For Jon Stewart, it’s none of the above. But it will entail pitching his new movie to select foreign buyers and sharing footage. Rosewater –Stewart’s directorial debut – is an adaptation of Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy's memoir: "Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity and Survival" – a New York Times bestseller. The film will cover Bahari's 2009 arrest in Iran where he was covering an election protest.

After Three Months Out, Jon Stewart Makes His Triumphant Daily Show Return: Big Macs, Paula Deen And Syria

Jon Stewart John Oliver

We loved John Oliver on The Daily Show, but let’s be honest – it’s really Jon Stewart’s schtick. Well, fans of the comedian/director/pundit will no doubt be glad to learn that he is finally back to hosting the satirical news show. Stewart spent the summer filming his movie Rosewater in Jordan and, naturally the opening gag had to make reference of that.

Jon Stewart, Primetime Emmy Awards
Stewart returned with a healthy tan and a bout of nostalgia.

We won’t spoil it for you, but it did involve Stewart, Oliver, Stephen Colbert and Big Mac defibrillators. It might not have been the subtlest of gags, but it did get the point across – Jon Stewart is back and entirely his old, red, white and blue American self. And while Stewart admitted to enjoying the cultural experience, apparently there’s nothing like being back in the good ol’ US of A. "For all that I appreciate and learned about the culture that I was immersed in, boy, I'm Western, in all its glorious, decadent imperfections," he said. "I recall driving back to New York City thinking, 'Hello dildo shop near a school.’”

StePhest Colbchella Kicks Off With Stephen Colbert Skating Into Our Hearts To The Sound Of 'Get Lucky'

Stephen Colbert Daft Punk Hugh Laurie Jeff Bridges Matt Damon Jimmy Kimmel Jon Stewart Bryan Cranston

Stephen Colbert’s political satire might be top notch, but his dance skills are not to be overestimated. Last night, the Colbert Report host strapped on a pair of roller skates and boogied down to the sound of 'Get Lucky' – the Daft Punk/Pharrell Williams hit that’s become the inescapable soundtrack to this summer. The, um, energetic performance served as the kickoff for Colbert’s summer series of concerts or “StePhest Colbchella ‘013” – it’s what the cool kids call it.

Stephen Colbert, Tribeca Film Fest
Who knew Colbert posessed such hidden talents?

But, of course, the host dancing all by himself would have been a bit sad, so instead he brought in some friends – Hugh Laurie, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and even Colbert’s former colleague, Jon Stewart – still on leave from The Daily Show – joined in with some tight moves. Colbert’s moves turned out to be too much for the Colbert Report studio, so the shenanigans infiltrated the America’s Got Talent stage and even an interview with Bryan Cranston and the rest of the Breaking Bad cast – at which point Cranston simply joined in for an amazing 70s themed dance routine. We couldn’t do it justice. Just watch the video:

Jon Stewart Is On Vacation From 'The Daily Show', Long Live John Oliver

Jon Stewart John Oliver

Jon Stewart is taking the summer off his duties at The Daily Show, a hiatus which started last night. It’s alright though, because Stewart’s post is aptly covered by the show’s regular correspondent, John Oliver, who kicked off his run last night (Thursday) prompting a spike in the satirical news program’s viewership. As much as fans have enjoyed Oliver’s hosting skills however, Comedy Central is expecting an even bigger spike tonight, when Stewart links in from location via Skype.

Jon Stewart, Emmy Press Room
Stewart has left the show in capable hands.

Oliver will assume hosting duties until fall, while Stewart is off directing his very first movie, according to Deadline. Stewart’s directorial debut, Rosewater, will keep to his area of expertise, political commentary. The film centers on the story of a journalist, detained in an Iranian prison and interrogated using brutal methods. The movie is expected for a 2014 release, with the exact date still to be announced.

Jon Stewart Is "Captured Foreign Spy" On Egyptian TV Show

Jon Stewart John Oliver

Jon Stewart, US writer, comedian, and host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show, has made an appearance on Egyptian television's top satire program, Al-Bernameg. He was introduced as a guest after being brought out by suited goons underneath a hood to the sound of Star Wars' Imperial March. After the hood was whipped off and he was introduced as Jon Stewart, the crowd exploded into cheering and applause.

Al-Bernameg, which translates to The Program, is Egypt's equivalent of USA's The Daily Show where a mock news studio and news presenter is used to send up political figures and occurrences. The program is hosted by Bassem Youssef, who rose to fame as an incredibly popular comedian after making online political videos mocking Egyptian politics during the 2011 uprising.

An unmasked Stewart began to speak to the audience in Arabic, saying "thank you" and "please sit down, I am a simple man who does not like to be fussed over" over and over again before he explained in English that that was all he could memorise. The rest of the interview was conducted in English, which included Stewart's upcoming Iranian documentary Rosewater, and the issue of satire in a country as strict as Egypt.

Does John Oliver Work As Host Of The Daily Show? You Bet He Does.

John Oliver Jon Stewart Seth Rogen

John Oliver made his debut as Jon Stewart's temporary replacement on the Daily Show on Monday night (June 10, 2013) and proved to be quite the hit. The British comedian - recommended to Stewart by Ricky Gervais - used his tried and test brand of self-depracating humor from the off. And it worked.

"I am John Oliver and let's all just acknowledge for a moment that this is weird. This looks weird, it feels weird, it even sounds weird-and this is my actual voice," he began, to a barrage of applause. There was some criticism of Oliver's interviewing techniques, though he had already joked of his disdain for celebrity sit-downs and his questions of comedic actor Seth Rogen were reasonable enough. Mainly he just told the actor that he loved his new movie This Is The End

Oliver can't lose as Daily Show host. He had a couple of clever tactics for thwarting the critics, firstly thinking out loud how he'd be barracked for the performance, and secondly partaking in a little skit with special correspondent Aasif Mandvi about Buzzfeed apparently posting 'The 27 Worst Moments of John Oliver's First Six Minutes.'

Meet John Oliver, Jon Stewart's Replacement As Daily Show Host

John Oliver Jon Stewart David Letterman Jay Leno

John Oliver? No? Never heard of him? Well, the British comedian is about to replace Jon Stewart as host of the Daily Show, just for the summer of course. Recommended to Stewart by Ricky Gervais, the dark-haired, bespectacled, self-deprecating Oliver has a popular podcast following, though the Daily Show is his biggest gig to date. Obviously.

The comedian was taping a stand-up set for the fourth season of his Comedy Central series John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show at the Webster Hall on Tuesday night (June 4, 2013) when he was asked by an audience member if he was excited to fill the boots of Stewart, "The only thing I'm nervous about is talking to guests like human beings, because all of my interviews so far have been attacking people," Oliver says. "I have a genuine concern about sitting across from an actor whose movies I obviously haven't seen."

On a recent interview with one of the hottest movie stars of the moment, Oliver explained, "Two nights ago, I had a nightmare I was interviewing Jaden Smith. I said, 'Look, Jaden, I haven't seen "After Earth" but the trailers look awful,' and behind him, I could see Will Smith doing this [raises a fist]. I don't know why in my head that's how Will Smith expresses anger, like a 1920s journalist."

John Olivier's Jon Stewart Daily Show Takeover Date Confirmed

Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart’s departure date from the Daily Show has been confirmed and it’s coming up fearful soon folks. Don’t panic too much though, he’s not gone forever and it’s a safe pair of hands that’ll be taking over from him while he’s away – correspondent John Oliver.

While he’s away Stewart will be directing his first feature film, titled Rosewater and adapted from the book Then They Came For Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity and Survival by journalist Mazir Bahari. As the Los Angeles Times reports, the book and film tells the story of BBC journalist Bahari, who was sent to an Iranian prison for four months on suspicion that he was a spy. Among the evidence against him was an appearance he made on The Daily Show, during which correspondent Jason Jones appeared in a deliberately goofy spy outfit.

Meanwhile the Daily Show gets Olivier from June 10th until September 3rd, when Stewart will return. The British comedian has been with the show since 2006 so certainly knows the ropes, and in a statement he said "Don’t worry, it's still going to be everything that you love about 'The Daily Show,' just without the thing that you love the most about it." Guests scheduled for his first week in charge include Seth Cohen, Armando Iannucci, Marvis Staples and Fareed Zakaria.

Jon Stewart Takes CNN To Task For Boston Bombings Reportage

Jon Stewart CNN

John King’s erroneous report that a suspect had been identified in conjuction with the Boston bombings triggered a trail of CNN slip-ups on which Daily Show host Jon Stewart made them pay. Chris Cuomo, Fran Townsend and King tried to put the error down to third parties, dodgy sources and mystical events.

“There’s clearly something afoot today,” said King, possibly trying to pin the blame on Harry Potter. “We’re getting some conflicting reports about an arrest,” said Coumo. “The information has been dribbling and drabbling—there’s obviously been a lot of confusion,” added Townsend, using words that don’t really mean anything to explain what happened. Cuomo then summed it all up by saying: “We don’t know what’s right or not right at this point, and as Anderson always says, you don’t want to go down the road of speculation wrongfully.” Well, step in Mr. Stewart, who always knows the right (funny) thing to say. “Well, that’s what you were doing!” he said/screamed in reply.

Jon Stewart And Stephen Colbert In Boston Marathon Tribute

Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert weren’t about for The Daily Show on Monday evening, but they were back yesterday to follow the rest of America in paying tribute to the city of Boston and how they were coping with the terrible events of the day before when two explosive devices went off at the end of the Boston Marathon.

Both Stewart and Colbert had plenty to say on the subject, the below just a couple of excerpts of their thoughts on the incident. “I really hate the fact that I can cross-reference my thoughts to so many other events that have occurred over the years — so I'm not going to. I'm just going to say this to Boston: Thank you,” said Stewart, “Thank you for once again, in the face of gross inhumanity, inspiring and solidifying my belief in humanity and the people of this country. So thank you for everything you've done."

Colbert meanwhile commented  “I just want to take a moment to talk about the attack in Boston yesterday. Obviously, our thoughts and our prayers are with everybody there. And as the president said, we don't know who did this, but they will be found, and they will be brought to justice.” Continuing he added “But whoever did this obviously did not know (anything) about the people of Boston. Because nothing these terrorists do is going to shake them. For Pete's sake, Boston was founded by the pilgrims — a people so tough they had to buckle their (darn) hats on. It is the cradle of the American revolution. “

Jon Stewart On Daily Show Hiatus To Make Directorial Debut

Jon Stewart

He’s known as a funny man, but The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart will be putting his serious face on after it was revealed that the comic and TV host would be directing his first film, adaptation Rosewater.

Whilst it’s certainly interesting news regards Stewart’s career, and you ‘d reckon he’d definitely be able to make a good fist of helming a movie, it’s perhaps less good news for fans of his dayjob, The Daily Show. As the New York Times reported, making the film is going to require Stewart taking 12 weeks off the program. “I am a television person who is accustomed to having a thought at 10 a.m. and having it out there at 6:30 p.m. and moving on, so this is a little scary, yes,” Mr. Stewart said to the paper.

The film is an adaptation of a book called Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival, by Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy. The story concerns Iranian journalist Bahari’s 118-day imprisonment following the 2009 Iran elections, which he was covering. Talking about it, Stewart commented “One of the reasons we are in this business is to challenge ourselves, and I really connected to Maziar’s story. It’s a personal story but one with universal appeal about what it means to be free.”

The Next Argo? Jon Stewart To Direct Iranian Movie Rosewater

Jon Stewart

The Daily Show stalwart and everybody's favourite satirist Jon Stewart will be going on a temporary hiatus from the show that bears his name this summer, with Deadline reporting that the comic will be directing his first film whilst he is away from the hit show.

Stewart's first venture behind the camera is for the adaptation of the Maziar Bahari memoir Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival. The adaptation, which has been given the more movie poster appropriate title of Rosewater, tells the story of Bahari's time in a Iranian prison, where the Iranian/Canadian journalist was locked away for 118 days in 2009. During his absence form the Daily Show, DS writer and Community star John Oliver will be taking his place for eight of the twelve weeks that Stewart will be away, with hosts for the other four unconfirmed.

Bahari and Stewart first struck up a friendship after the journalist's appearance on the Daily Show prior to his arrest in Iran, with Iranian authorities citing his appearance on the show as proof that he was a spy. Following his release Bahari has appeared on the Daily Show two other times, his most recent appearance coming in 2011. Despite Stewart's comedic background, Rosewater will be a serious film so don't go see it expecting a satirical look at Iranian prisons. Filming will begin this summer.

A whole host of musicians of varying genres and eras have been included in the line-up. Patti Smith, with whom Bruce co-wrote the hit ‘Because The Night’ will be there, as will Faith Hill, Emmylou Harris, as well as Alabama Shakes, Eddie Vedder and Neil Young. Hugh Grant Responds To Jon Stewart Rant

Hugh Grant Jon Stewart

Everyone likes a bit of high profile conflict, but no one expects the drama to come from someone like Jon Stewart.

The Daily Show host made a bit of a stir recently with his statement about Hugh Grant being “the worst guest on the show” at a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey recently.

In an online Q&A, Stewart said of the actor: “He’s my least favorite guest. And we’ve had dictators on the show.” He added that he would never have the actor appear on the show again. Harsh words, but apparently, the on-screen English charm doesn’t translate to real life situations. Can’t say we aren’t a bit disappointed there.

Hugh Grant Apologises To Jon Stewart For Bad Behaviour

Hugh Grant Jon Stewart

To contact Hugh Grant via Twitter the name he's chosen for himself is @HackedOffHugh. Despite that being a reference to his recent work in the Leveson Report, it's more than apt for the accusations levied towards him by Jon Stewart.

The Daily Show host, in an informal interview with his friend and colleague Stephen Colbert, during a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival, spoke about his experience with Grant when he came on The Daily Show for an interview: "He's giving everyone s*** the whole time, and he's a big pain in the a** ... And we've had dictators on the show." Said Stewart, quoted by NY Daily News. Back then, in 2009, Grant was publicising the terrible movie Did You Hear About the Morgans? and criticised a clip of the film used in the show. "What is that clip? It's a terrible clip," Grant said. "Well, then make a better f***ing movie," Stewart acerbically replied.

Since hearing about Stewart's opinion of him, Grant has used his twitter account, normally reserved for information and discourse about the hacking inquiry, and used the platform to apologize for his behaviour:

Kristen Stewart On Robert Pattinson, On The Road, And Her Career

Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson Jon Stewart

Kristen Stewart will hopefully, finally, be able to shake that singular association with Bella Swan and The Twilight Saga, and reinvent herself in movies that garner a little more respect from the film industry, since it's finished. And, she'll have plenty of time to do that as she plans to be in the business for a long time.

Speaking to E! on the red carpet for her latest movie, an adaptation for On the Road, she was asked her about plans acting, "Oh man, I really love my job," she said, "I would not give it up." E! also revealed that she'll be spending Christmas and NYE with Robert Pattinson, before he jets off to start work on his next big project. Plus, despite telling Robert Pattinson to ditch K-Stew after she cheated on him in the summer, Jon Stewart praised her on her performance, when she joined him on The Daily Show: "It's a terrific performance," Jon told her. "For a novel that they say is unfilmable, you guys did a hell of a job. So nice work."

Although Jon Stewart's made a turn around about his opinion of Kristen, reported by Entertainment wise, according to a poll at The National Wedding Show saw Robert Pattinson be voted the most eligible bachelor jointly with Prince Harry, showing that despite the reconciliation between the pair the rest of the public still consider him fair game.

Jon Stewart Calls Hugh Grant "Worst Guest Ever" (Including Dictators)

Jon Stewart Hugh Grant

Jon Stewart - the U.S. host of The Daily Show - has named Hugh Grant his least favourite guest on the programme, following his appearance in 2009. The British actor, known for his romantic-comedies, was described as a "big pain in the ass" by Stewart, who says he is no longer welcome on the show.

Speaking during a Q&A last week, Stewart laid into the Love Actually star, naming him as his least favourite guest, adding, "And we've had dictators on the show." The actor appeared on The Daily Show while promoting his poorly received comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? though reportedly spent much of his time complaining to staff and saying he had better places to be. He also complained about the clip that was shown to promote the film, though Stewart responded, "Well, then make a better f***ing movie." Though Stewart's remarks come as no real surprise, the pair are both prominent critics of the media, with Grant taking an active role in the campaign for tighter regulation of the British press in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal. Stewart almost quit The Daily Show in 1999, saying, "What I did not realize is, a lot of the people who worked there were assholes."

The Emmy winner replaced original host Craig Kilborn, immediately shifting the tone to sharply satirical.

Hugh Grant Labelled The Daily Show's 'Worst Ever Guest' By Jon Stewart

Hugh Grant Jon Stewart

Whilst in Britain Hugh Grant’s been receiving sympathy for his part in the phone hacking scandal and subsequent inquiry into press practices in the country, across in the US he seems to have lost at least one fan – host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart.

Third Beat Magazine reports that, during a question and answer session with Steven Colbert in New Jersey at a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival, Stewart pinpointed Grant as the least favorite guest he’d ever had on the show, quipping “and we’ve had dictators on the show”. Stewart was talking about a time when Grant appeared on his show to talk about his movie Did You Hear About The Morgans? in 2009, and apparently the actor didn’t endear himself to the crew. "He's giving everyone s*** the whole time, and he's a big pain in the a**," Stewart said.

The root of Grant’s disgruntlement apparently came down to a clip provided by the film’s publicist. "What is that clip? It's a terrible clip,” Grant allegedly said, to which Stewart snapped back "Well, then make a better f***ing movie,” Stewart replied. The fundraiser was a reportedly lively event, with Stewart telling his old friend and former co-star Colbert about how tough he found it initially to take on hosting The Daily Show when he joined in 1999, admitting that he struggled to get on with the writers and, at one point, had to be “talked down off a moderately high cliff” regards quitting the show.

Bruce Springsteen And The Rolling Stones Among The Lineup Of Sandy Benefit Concert

Rolling Stones Jon Bon Jovi Bruce Springsteen Jon Stewart Adam Sandler Alicia Keys The Who Sir Paul McCartney Nirvana Mick Jagger

A slew of New York natives, as well as plenty of Brits performed at last night’s 12-12-12 benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy, which ripped through the city in October.

Bruce Springsteen, a Jersey man himself, took the stage first with Land of Hope and Dreams followed by the evocative Wrecking Ball and the very aptly themed My City in Ruins, all of which was meant to address the rebuilding process and the NY spirit. The musician spoke fondly of his native New Jersey, mentioning its inclusiveness. “I pray that this chraracteristic remains the same” Springsteen went on to say, before going into Born to Run, for which he was joined on stage by Jon Bon Jovi, another Jersey resident.

The concert was definitely geared towards classic rock fans – a smart marketing decision, since this is also the demographic with the highest disposable income. Besides a number of to-the-bone New Yorkers, like Jon Stewart, Adam Sandler and Alicia Keys, it also featured an unexpectedly high number of appearances by British musicians – The Who and Sir Paul McCartney among others. The ex-Beatle joined the surviving members of Nirvana onstage for a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Danny DeVito, Christina Aguilera And Jon Bon Jovi Among Superstars Who Show Support For Hurricane Sandy Benefit

Bruce Springsteen Jon Bon Jovi Danny Devito Mary J Blige Christina Aguilera Tina Fey Jimmy Fallon Steven Tyler Jon Stewart

America is still rocked by the devastating aftermath of hurricane Sandy, and the thought that 'never would a disaster like this happen to me' seemed to resonate on the faces at the Sandy Benefit Concert on Friday (Nov. 2).

The star power drawn in was impressive, with such entertainers as Bruce Springsteen, Danny Devito and Mary J Blige each pledging their time to the good cause.

Opening the night's proceedings was Staten Island-born Christina Aguilera, who kicked things off with a powerful and stripped down rendition of her song 'Beautiful'. Relying solely on her vocals, Xtina packed a heft punch that delivered all the way home. Next up to perform was New Jersey's Jon Bon Jovi who first gave a shout-out to his hometown of Sayerville, N.J., before re-appropriating his hair-rock hit 'Livin’ On A Prayer' to suit the sombre mood in the studio.

The Show Must Go On? David Letterman Props Up Entertainment Industry During Hurricane Sandy

David Letterman Jimmy Fallon Jimmy Kimmel Stephen Colbert Jon Stewart The XX Cat Power Grimes Rufus Wainwright The National Keira Knightley Russell Crowe Will Smith

The mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg has been making sure that the city's residents were fully prepared for Hurricane Sandy, which hit New York last night. And whilst the majority of New York citizens paid heed, TV presenter David Letterman decided to pay heed instead to that age-old motto from the world of entertainment. "the show must go on!"

According to MTV, Letterman wasn't going to let a minor detail like the biggest storms to ever hit the USA stop him from filming one of his late night chat shows. He did, however, film the episode of The Late Show With David Letterman without the presence of his usual live audience. He may have been prepared to brave the elements to get the show filmed but he wasn't about to let the general public endanger themselves in the process. The same applied to Jimmy Fallon's show, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Other shows weren't so lucky. Jimmy Kimmel was forced to cancel one of his tapings in Brooklyn, announcing on Twitter "Though it pains us to do it, JKL from Brooklyn tonight is cancelled. I'm disappointed too, but we want you to be safe." Over at Comedy Central, however, the laughter stopped for the night. Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart both cancelled the filming for their shows.

Jon Stewart And Bill O'Reilly Lock Horns In Their Own Presidential Debate

Jon Stewart Bill O'Reilly

With election fever hotting up in the USA, Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly took to their soapboxes to provide their own debate over the Presidential duel running between current incumbent Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Unsurprisingly though, given that the host of The Daily Show and The O'Reilly Commentary man are known for their irreverence, the conversation soon turned into something a little more trivial and light hearted, with much of the debate coming down to their respective heights.

Called Rumble In The Air-Conditioned Auditorium, the live-streamed 90 minute chat soon descended into humour with the 5'7 Stewart looking positively diminutive next to the 6'4 O'Reilly. This was addressed by the production team, who gave Stewart a mechanical platform so that he could rise and lower himself. "I can see why Obama did badly in the debate," he said after going up. "The altitude really is rough up here." Their main disagreement focused on what Romney had recently said about 47% not being able to take responsibility of their lives. "About 20% of us are slackers, and it's a growing industry," O'Reilly said, only to be shot down by Stewart as "bulls***"

The debate did focus on some key points, but ultimately the aim of the game seemed to be on comedy and entertainment, which those paying $4.95 for the stream got in spades. It was certainly a great deal livelier than the real candidates' debate last week.

Jon Stewart Lays Into Bill O'Reilly During Presidential Debate Spoof

Jon Stewart Bill O'Reilly

Politically minded TV hosts Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly brought the laughs to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., with a charity spoof of the on-going presidential campaign on Saturday night(October 6th).

Under the title The Rumble in the Air-Conditioned Auditorium, Stewart stared as the fictitious Democrat facing O'Reilly's Republican 'candidate,' with the whole thing being live-streamed to an eager online audience.

The 90-minute debate first brought the laughs when the 5'7" Stewart decided to go one bit higher than the 6'4" O'Reilly by using a mechanical pedestal to gain the height advantage. Comedy Central's outspoken Liberal Stewart then proceeded to lay into Fox News controversially right-wing O'Reilly, labelling him as the 'Mayor of Bullsh*t Mountain.' The debate was not solely a chance for the two hosts to go at each other's throats though, as the whole thing was a light-hearted and good natured affair whose main purpose was to bring the laughs, USA Today and CNN have both said.

'Terminator' star Arnold Schwarzenegger arrives for his appearance on 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart' and immediately approaches his waiting fans to sign their photos and merchandise. He only manages a brief wave at the photographers as he makes his way down the row of fans before he is ushered into the building. The photographers let out a frustrated groan in unison at Schwarzenegger's failure to pose for a snap.

Wordplay Review

Excellent
I am not particularly a puzzler, but Wordplay, Patrick Creadon's ode to crossword makers and lovers is so reverent and infectious, it's hard not to get caught up in the desire to put letters in all the empty boxes - in pen. I have never so badly wanted to finish a crossword.Wordplay is a fairly unabashed tongue bath of the practice of crosswords, but it's an enthusiastic and cheeky one that does more to rally everyone to get into the nerdy entertainment of puzzles rather than alienate those who can never figure out anything past 2 Down. There are times when this documentary feels like product placement for the New York Times, with all the praise heaped on the paper in general and its puzzle in particular, but Will Shortz, the longtime editor of the Times crossword, is the mega-celebrity of the puzzle world, so perhaps it's fair.Shortz is a lifelong puzzle lover (he even managed to get a self-designed degree from Indiana University in "enigmatology," the study of puzzles) who is both the hero and devil to millions who attempt his daily games. He reads from some of his (amusingly bilious) hate mail, but the film spends far more time with a legion of celebrity fans - including former President Clinton, Jon Stewart, Yankee's pitcher Mike Mussina, and documentarian Ken Burns, among others - who wax poetic about the genius of the daily crossword and the place it holds in American culture. It sounds slightly overblown, but when you watch the ritual these people put into it - folding the paper just so, taking care to select the appropriate writing instrument - it is clearly not an idle pastime.Probably the most instructional is the time spent with Shortz's colleague Merl Reagle, one of the many who actually create the puzzles for the Times, who skims through the rules and artistry involved in making one of these puzzles - that will undoubtedly bring frustration and personal triumph to many - with impressive deftness. And just when the star-studded interviews were beginning to feel like fawning song-and-dance shows, they culminate with the various folks tackling the puzzle we previously saw Reagle create, making for a particularly endearing sequence.Inevitably, this movie will face numerous comparisons to that last documentary in praise of geeky American wordsmiths, Spellbound, and it's not a bad one, especially as the latter half of the film begins to focus on the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament that takes place every spring in Stamford, Connecticut. We meet a few of the notable competitors in the first half of the film, seeing them in their day-to-day lives: A cocky student from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a mild-mannered pianist in New York, an upbeat gay guy living in Florida. It's here, though, that they really settle into their element, minor celebrities among the small group of puzzle enthusiasts devoted to their yearly three-day pilgrimage to a Marriott in suburban Connecticut.Wordplay veers a little far into the sappy when it tries to get across the deep and heartfelt importance that this conference - and puzzles in general - means to these people with slo-mo musical montages and choked-up interviewees, but the competition itself is surprisingly energizing. Especially since it is a bunch of people sitting around filling in crosswords - it's not NASCAR, after all - but you get surprisingly invested in who will come out on top. The real fun of the film, though, is that it maintains that baffled, quirky sense of humor throughout, so the competition itself is interesting, but the best part about it is the table of commentators running a play-by-play of the action. Of filling out a crossword. Who knew such a thing existed? We do now, thanks to Creadon and a documentary that is as sweet and charming as it is fluffy and slight. But that's all right - sometimes all a documentary needs for a resounding moment is one subject giving an earnest interview about how preferable the lively Q is to the uninteresting and dull letter N.

Doogal Review

Bad
I'm a little ashamed to say this, but here goes: I didn't know what Doogal was supposed to be. From the looks of him (see picture, below), I thought he might be some kind of hairy bowel movement. His name is Doogal. His best friend is a snail. It's not unreasonable. It's juvenile, yes, but that's what Hollywood animated fare has become, by and large, so you can hardly blame me.

Turns out Doogal (Daniel Tay) is actually a dog. His best friend is Florence (Kylie Minogue), as well as a cow (Whoopi Goldberg), a train (Chevy Chase), and a flatulent moose (Kevin Smith). Their adventure, and you'll need to hang in there for this, involves magic diamonds that can freeze the sun. There's of course a bad guy with a plan to do just that: He's a kind of alien with a spring for the lower half of his body (voiced by an audibly bored Jon Stewart). Their adventure to stop her takes them across the countryside and, er, into, like, a magic land, or, something, I think.

The Aristocrats Review

Excellent
In the dark weeks following 9/11, Comedy Central's management surprisingly decided not to cancel its taping of The Friar's Club Roast of Hugh Hefner. During the recording of the event, hundreds of comedians and urban luminaries found themselves shocked out of their post-terrorism pall by none other than Gilbert Gottfried, who delivered what the New York Times' Frank Rich, an attendee of the taping, called "the greatest dirty joke ever told."

Tracing its origins to vaudeville, this "comic's joke" is tantamount to a secret handshake among comedians and their friends. Although versions vary widely, it basically goes like this: A man seeking show biz representation walks into a talent agent's office and describes his family's act, which consists of various illegal and unspeakable activities including incest, bestiality, necrophilia, and an explosion of bodily fluids. After the man finishes, the appalled agent asks what this horrible act is called, to which the man responds, "The Aristocrats!"

The Faculty Review

Very Good
Finally. We always knew Robert Rodriguez had talent as a filmmaker. We were just waiting for someone to put a good script in his hands, and Kevin Williamson has done that here. Do not be fooled by the woefully bad trailers, or by the fact that critics have roundly panned this horror film. The Faculty is easily the best of the genre to come along since Williamson's breakout hit, Scream. It is also the first watchable film Rodriguez has put up since storming onto the scene with El Mariachi.

Easily the biggest problem with this movie is in the marketing. I can only imagine how pissed off Williamson, Rodriguez, and everyone else involved in the movie must have been to see the film marketed as just another schlocky entry into the horror genre, which generally takes the words aliens; teenagers; battle; suspicious; killer; small town; etc. and jumble them up to come up with a concept (to wit, this time: suspicious small town teenagers battle killer aliens). Now if you are already a big 80s horror fan, just skip this review, because you already saw the movie, but this review is for people who are highly suspicious of shelling out eight bucks to see a horror flick. The only reason I actually saw The Faculty was because my little sister begged me to. But now I'm trying to convince you to.

Death To Smoochy Review

Bad
Classic children's television show hosts like Mister Rogers and Barney make great role models for children, but their trite style makes them easy targets for adult jokes. Danny DeVito's latest project, Death to Smoochy, is well-intended with its mockery of children's television and those inane hosts, however it is completely misdirected in its efforts to be funny.

After the obnoxious but popular host Rainbow Randolph (Robin Williams) is caught taking bribes from parents who want their kids on television, network head Frank Stokes (Jon Stewart) pulls the plug on his show. An exhaustive search through the downtrodden Barney wannabes to replace Randolph yields a pink, squeaky-clean rhino named Smoochy (Edward Norton), who becomes an overnight success with the kids despite his preachings of bland politically correct messages to children. Despite Smoochy's best wishes, his boss Nora (Catherine Keener) wants to cash in on the show's newfound success by selling Smoochy-sponsored cereals, cola, and string cheese. Randolph, on the other hand, is hell-bent on making life miserable for the rhino, and Smoochy's crooked agent (Danny DeVito) is busy making backdoor deals trying to sell Smoochy out to the mob.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back Review

Good

Somewhere out there in the cinematic ether there's an elusive line between lewdly moronic raunch comedies like "Tomcats" or "Freddy Got Fingered" and sophomoric, low-brow sex and gross-out romps that can make even intellectual types laugh until $3 concession Coca-Cola comes out of their noses.

I don't know where that line is exactly. All I know is that "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" is hilarious.

The latest low-budget, high-dialogue laffer from Kevin Smith -- writer-director of "Clerks," "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy" and "Dogma" -- this film puts his perennial cameo characters front and center for a combination road-trip/ruthless Hollywood satire that is so blanketed with ribald raillery it feels like machine-gun fire hitting your funny bone.
