Today, in honour of Martin Luther King Day, MTV is returning to its progressive, socially conscious days with a special twist on its programming. For twelve straight hours, the channel will air all its shows and music videos (all two of them) in black and white, in an effort to draw attention to racial tensions in the US.

Commercials will still air in colour though, presumably because capitalism trumps social justice.

Jordin Sparks Blasts Ex-Love Jason Derulo In New Diss Track

Jordin Sparks

Initially it was believed that Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks' split in September, after dating for three years, was not hostile and the two stars would remain amicable. Well this didn't apply to the 'American Idol' alum as she has just slammed her former love in a newly released diss track.

Sparks first teased fans with the new song, titled 'How Bout Now (Remix),' her version of Drake's hit track, on Power 106's 'The L.A. Leakers' Monday (Nov 24th). She blasts Derulo for letting fame change him, and even refers to his 2012 neck injury.

"The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete" - This Year's Inevitable Social Tragedy? [Trailer]

Jennifer Hudson Jordin Sparks

The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete looks like one of those stories that leave a bad taste in your mouth, precisely because of how well-made they are. Mister is a 13-year-old boy living in poverty in Brooklyn, taking care of his younger brother Pete and trying to help his convicted, substance-dependent mother find a job that doesn’t require a background check.

When his mother is once again jailed. However, Mister is forced to fend for himself. He also has to take care of 9-year-old Pete, while the two hide from social workers, the police and worst of all – the criminals his mother was involved with. Mister is often reduced to begging on the street to feed himself and little Pete. Gradually, the boy learns that his mother isn’t going to return, even after she is let free.

Reality Invasion: "A Capital Fourth" Special Taken Over By Talent Competition Stars

Jordin Sparks

This year’s televised “A Capitol Fourth” fireworks show might seem a bit different – more in touch with “reality,” one might say. That’s because this year’s celebrity roster includes a record number of singing, dancing reality stars. This is no coincidence apparently. TV stars from scripted and reality programs have been an increasingly important part of the festivities for the past several years, but this time around they took center stage. According to the show’s producer, Michael Colbert, it’s the people’s will.

Candice Glover, Crystal and Luci Awards
Candice Glover is among this year's reality reps.

“Today, these [TV stars] are so popular. You’re able to have a real connection with them as amateurs-turned-stars,” said Colbert, who has produced the Fourth of July special for more than 20 years with his father, executive producer Jerry Colbert, the man who founded “A Capitol Fourth.”, for the Washington Post “People really love it . . . and one of our goals is to try to get something for everybody.”

Were American Idol Contestants Booted Because Of The Color Of Their Skin?

American Idol Ruben Studdard Fantasia Barrino Jordin Sparks

American Idol is at the centre of a racism lawsuit after it was claimed black contestants were booted from the hit talent show as a direct result of discrimination. TMZ.com obtained a letter filed with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by New York lawyer James H Freeman, which accused the show of deliberately exploiting black contestants to improve ratings.

Entertainment lawyer Freeman requested permission to sue American Idol and Fox on behalf of nine former singing contestants who believe they were forced from the competition because of their race. His clients include Corey Clark, Jaered Andrews, Donnie Williams, Terrell Brittenum, Derrell Brittenum, Thomas Daniels, Akron Watson, Ju'Not Joyner and Chris Golightly. Freeman says he noticed something was awry when Jermaine Jones was kicked off the show in March 2012, with producers claiming he was disqualified because he had not told the show there were outstanding warrants for his arrest. Nine other people had been publically disqualified from the show: all were black.

Three black contestants have won the show, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Jordin Sparks, while prominent judge Randy Jackson is black. Season two contestant Corey Clark sued MTV for $40 million in 2012 for their coverage of his disqualification from the show.

Miley Cyrus won the day on the stage with a cover of Billy Idol's 'Rebel Yell', but her conservative look was eclipsed on the red carpet

Curves won out the day at the stad-studded VH1 Divas event that took place at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles last night (December 16), with the likes of Kelly Osbourne and Jenna Dewan-Tatum - wife of actor Channing Tatum - turning the heads of the paparazzi as they headed down the red carpet. Yes, while Miley Cyrus was winning attention on the stage, with The Sun reporting that she covered Billy Idol's 'Rebel Yell', off stage her conservative look was largely overlooked.

Kelly Clarkson's Engagement Ring Takes Center Stage At VH1's Divas Night (Video)

Kelly Clarkson Miley Cyrus Kelly Rowland Demi Lovato Jordin Sparks Whitney Houston Donna Summer Adam Lambert Keri Hilson

Kelly Clarkson was the star of last night’s VH1 Divas show (Sunday December 16, 2012)… or rather her huge engagement ring was!

Clarkson’s partner, Brandon Blackstock proposed last week and the American Idol was looking radiantly happy as she took to the stage for the VH1 show. The Daily Mail have published snaps of the star, in her multi-fabric, figure hugging gown, her “canary yellow” diamond ring taking centre stage as she clutches the microphone stand in front of her.

Kelly joined a number of other female stars for the VH1 show, which was held in aid of the Save the Music foundation, which funds music programmes and has done so for the last decade. Kelly Rowland, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Jordin Sparks were amongst the performers. The event paid tribute to Whitney Houston and Donna Summer, both of whom passed away this year.

End Of The Year Special VH1 Divas Will Be Hosted By Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert Kelly Clarkson Jordin Sparks Keri Hilson

Adam Lambert is to host VH1 Divas, the end-of-the-year special that the channel is preparing.

The show is to focus on famous divas in pop culture, honouring, paying tribute to and sometimes poking fun at some of 2012’s infamous diva moments. Lambert himself is very excited about the event, as he said in an interview with Access Hollywood: “I just feel like people aren’t ready for this party. I don’t think anyone’s going to be ready for it. It’s going to hit them like a ton of bricks across the face and people are going to walk away from watching this thing like, ‘That was the best party of the entire year. I feel it. Yeah!”

The phrase “a ton of bricks” sounds a bit ominous to us, but the show will feature some interesting segments, according to Lambert himself. There are scheduled performances by the likes of American Idol veterans Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks, as well as Demi Lovato and Keri Hilson, all fitting nicely within the diva theme. There will also be a sketch, performed by Lambert himself with real housewife NeNe Leakes. Of course, the show will also aim to pay tribute to famous divas, the late Whitney Houston and Donna Summer. Lambert is excited about hosting the show, as well as performing himself. And let’s not forget all of the crazy costumes the self-proclaimed male diva will get to wear, some of which Lambert designed himself.

Adam Lambert Joins VH1 Divas, With Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland, Miley Cyrus And Others

Adam Lambert Kelly Rowland Demi Lovato Ciara Miley Cyrus Jordin Sparks

VH1 Divas annual special has become a staple in the network's yearly plans since 1998, and this year sees Adam Lambert host the fabulous night, reports E!

This year the show will see performances from Demi Lovato, Ciara, Jordin Sparks, Miley Cyrus and Kelly Roland, and will include special tributes to the Whitney Houston, and Donna Summer- true divas. Lambert expressed his excitement about the post in a statement: "I'm so thrilled to be hosting VH1 Divas this year... I have a feeling it's going to be the most fabulous concert of the year! And LIVE!! Get ready for some amazing performances, killer fashion and fierce divas!" If Lambert performs then he'll certainly add to that list of amazing performances, but he's certainly got the killer fashion down to a T- especially given his recent change of hairstyle, now sporting a surprisingly flattering silver barnet.

Despite us all loving all the performers set for the show, we're not quite sure they quite stack up to the title 'Divas'. With previous performers including Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Celine Dion and the ultimate diva- Diana Ross. Anyway, we're open for them all to prove us wrong. VH1 Divas airs on December 16th.

Good

An energetic cast and some terrific music make up for the rather hackneyed plot of this Dreamgirls-style drama. Remade from a 1976 film, the story is that familiar trajectory of musicians who achieve fame only to fall into a string of ugly problems. It's just about watchable, but what makes it notable is that it features Whitney Houston in her last film role.

It's set in 1968 Detroit, where Sister (Ejogo) is determined to become a star. Her singer-songwriter sister Sparkle (Sparks) is the one with real talent, but she's happy to stay in the background with their other sister Dee (Sumpter). As Sister and Her Sisters, they are managed by Stix (Luke), a fast-talking charmer who falls for Sparkle. But the girls' intensely religious mother (Houston) is under no illusions: she has been there, done that and continually warns her daughters that they shouldn't go the same way she did. But of course, they have to live their messy lives themselves.

Since it's such a familiar story, the film has a cheesy, soapy feel to it, playing on the sisters' rebellion against their religious upbringing. Of course, danger is represented in the men they fall for. While good-girl Sparkle tries to keep Stix at arms' length for awhile at least, Sister must choose between two men: the poor but nice Levi (Hardwick) and the flashy but drug-addled Satin (Epps). Since we know that she will choose the wrong guy, we know it's not going to be a happy journey for her. But this trawl through the dark side gives Ejogo a chance to steal the film with a much more emotionally charged performance.

Nicki Minaj Was ‘Inspired’ By American Idol

Nicki Minaj American Idol Ryan Seacrest Mariah Carey Jordin Sparks

Nicki Minaj has been reminiscing about her early impressions of American Idol, now that she’s a bona fide member of the panel, reports MTV.

"I remember watching 'American Idol' in the first season and feeling inspired," Minaj said on Monday during a press conference "I spoke to [season 6 winner] Jordin Sparks the other day and here she is starring in a movie ['Sparkle'] and I said to her, 'I remember watching you and picking up my phone." Minaj didn’t actually vote, but recalled how fond her family were of Sparks. "Because my little brother was more obsessed over the Blake person because he was like, more, you know, hip-hop, whatever," she said, "But I told her [Sparks] that, 'you know you're a part of history, kind of. Because I remember calling and seeing your face and being inspired and hearing your story."

It hasn’t taken Minaj long to settle in to her new role, and she’s even began making waves with the other judges, namely, Mariah Carey. The two just can’t seem to get along as they squabble and interrupt each other, but Ryan Seacrest thinks there’s nothing to worry about. “There are not too many dull moments between the two of them,” Seacrest explained to NBC’s Tonight Show, “but at the end of the day, we all hug and laugh and go home and get ready for another day. They get along fine, but they're strong and candid in their opinion."

Inspired By Idol: Nicki Minaj Explains Why She Became An American Idol Judge

Nicki Minaj American Idol Jordin Sparks Mariah Carey

Nicki Minaj has confounded many of her fans with her decision to become an American Idol judge. Minaj insists that she’s a fan of the show, though and in a press conference yesterday (September 16, 2012), she explained that she had been inspired when she watched the first series of the show. “I remember watching American Idol in the first season and feeling inspired… I spoke to Jordin Sparks the other day and here she is starring in a movie ['Sparkle'] and I said to her, 'I remember watching you and picking up my phone.”

We’ll gloss over the fact that Nicki didn’t actually vote for Jordin … but the sentiment is still the same. Minaj decided to join the show because she’d experienced first-hand the power that it can have over viewers – compelling them to pick up the phone and vote for their favourite singers. “This is such a credible brand,” Minaj told reporters. “It’s really serious, it’s real deal it's not anything else other than really looking for talent. If I can be a part of that I'm really down for it.” Unlike the official photo-call, for which she donned an outlandish luminous yellow, orange and green wig, Minaj opted for a sleek blonde number for the press conference.

There are already reports that Minaj does not get along with her co-judge Mariah Carey. Reports have surfaced that Carey was talking over her younger co-star in the first round of auditions and it already seems as though their onscreen relationship will provide a large proportion of the entertainment, this season. We reckon the real drama will erupt when the contestants start attempting some Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj songs
