Biography

Joss Stone

Joss Stone (born Jocelyn Eve Stoker on 11th of April 1987) is an English soul and R&B singer-songwriter and actress.

Stone emerged to fame in late 2003 with her multi-platinum debut album, The Soul Sessions making the 2004 Mercury Prize shortlist. Her second album, the also-multi-platinum Mind, Body & Soul, topped the UK Albums Chart and featured the UK top ten hit "You Had Me."

Stone's latest album, Introducing Joss Stone, released in March 2007, has achieved gold status by the RIAA.

Throughout her career, Stone has sold over ten million albums worldwide and has won two BRIT Awards and one Grammy Award. She also made her acting debut in late 2006 with the fantasy adventure film Eragon, as the witch Angela.

Music career

In 2002, Stone decided to back her ability by flying out from England for an audition in New York City with S-Curve Records CEO Steve Greenberg. She performed Donna Summer's 1979 "On the Radio" and the gamble paid off, with Stone signing to the label.

The Soul Sessions (2003)

Released in late 2003 the album consisted of little-known soul tracks, rather than Stone's own material.

It reached the top five on the UK Albums Chart, and also made the top forty of the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

The lead single, "Fell in Love with a Boy" a reworking of The White Stripes' 2001 "Fell in Love with a Girl," reached the top twenty of the UK Singles Chart, as did the second single, a cover version of Sugar Billy's 1974 song "Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin' on Me)."

The album eventually went triple platinum by the BPI in mid-April 2005 and gold by the RIAA in late March 2004.

Mind, Body & Soul (2004)

Released in 2004 the album proved to be an even bigger success than her first.

Containing new material, it debuted at number one in the UK and just missed the top ten of the U.S. Billboard 200, after peaking at number eleven.

The lead single, "You Had Me" became her biggest hit to date when it rose to number nine in the UK. Follow-up singles "Right to Be Wrong" and "Spoiled" both made the top forty, and "Don't Cha Wanna Ride" the top twenty.

In early September 2005, Mind, Body & Soul was certified triple platinum by the BPI and platinum by the RIAA.

At the 2005 BRIT Awards, Stone was nominated for British Breakthrough Act, and won British Female Solo Artist and British Urban Act, entering the Guinness World Records for being the youngest BRIT Award solo winner at age seventeen.

Introducing Joss Stone (2007)

Released in 2007 the album debuted and peaked at number twelve on the UK Albums Chart, not managing to match the success of Stone's two previous albums.

It nevertheless debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 selling 118,000 copies in its first week, then the highest debut for a British solo female artist on the U.S. chart.

"Tell Me 'bout It" the album's lead single, debuted and peaked at number twenty-eight on the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number eighty-three on the U.S Billboard Hot 100.

Film career

Stone made her film debut in the fantasy adventure film Eragon in 2006, playing the witch Angela.

In March 2008, Stone signed up for the role of a lesbian named Stephanie in the upcoming British romantic comedy Snappers.

Trivia

Stone made her first public appearance at school with a cover of Jackie Wilson's 1957 song "Reet Petite."

Stone was the youngest woman on the 2006 Sunday Times Rich List an annual list of the UK's wealthiest people with £6 million.

She was also ranked number seventy-eight on Maxim's 2007 Hot 100.

Stone was named the World's Best Celebrity Dog Owner of 2005 in an online poll conducted by readers of The New York Dog Magazine and The Hollywood Dog Magazine. She owns two female dogs: Missy, a Rottweiler (named after rapper Missy Elliott) and Dusty, a Poodle (named for Dusty Springfield, one of her major influences).

In 2005 she was voted the World's Sexiest Vegetarian by peta2.

Joss Stone Inspired By Mother Earth

Joss Stone

Joss Stone was inspired by nature while writing her new album 'Project Mama Earth'.

The 'You Had Me' hitmaker has collaborated with an all-star band - made up of Nitin Sawhney (guitar), Étienne M'Bappé (bass/guitar), Jonathan Shorten (keyboards) and Jonathan Joseph (drums) - as she explores a sound influenced by the music and traditions of the Mangambe and the Bikutsi.

Discussing the impact Mother Earth had on her lyrics, Joss told Billboard: ''The point of the song is about how we walk around incredibly arrogant, as though we can affect Mother Nature in a way that is irreversible. And, if she wants, she can just shake us off at a moment's notice.

Joss Stone - Water For Your Soul Album Review

Having broken through with her 2003 debut album, it can be easy to forget that the artist also known as Joscelyn Eve Stoker had barely finished school at the time - she's only turned 28 this year. Success on both sides of the Atlantic led to multi-platinum sales, yet recent years saw Joss Stone make headlines for more personal reasons. She'll be glad to get the focus back on her music.

Joss Stone - Water For Your Soul Album Review

There's no hesitation from Stone in catapulting her audience into the reggae direction that characterises 'Water For Your Soul' - though opening track 'Love Me' feels very much like an extended intro. On a positive note, her voice remains as soulfully strong as the teen that impressed so many over a decade ago, but the Caribbean flavours present do not compliment her style. Worst of all is the Placebo and Inner Circle sampling 'Harry's Symphony', where she throws in a few lines of 'Bad Boys' in a Jamaican accent - the infamous Brit Awards incident seemingly teaching her nothing. It's far from the only stinker though, 'Cut The Line' and 'Way Oh' amongst others tread a similar path.

Perhaps predictably it is when Stone returns to more familiar territory that this record brings some enjoyment - but these moments are rare in this collection. 'This Ain't Love' is the perfect reminder of why she was heralded as such a talent, while the Latin touch on 'Let Me Breathe' would have been a more suitable influence to pack this release with. Unfortunately, these are closer to token gestures while Stone indulges her reggae experimentation - a decision that won't see her return to former glories any time soon.

From Stages To Film Sets: Singers Who Have Traded Microphones For Acting Careers

Andre 3000 Harley Sylvester Rita Ora Iggy Azalea Adam Levine Rihanna Rizzle Kicks Joss Stone Justin Bieber

It seems if you can sing, you should be able to act with a whole host of super singers putting down their microphones and picking up a script instead. Justin Timberlake has made one of the most impressive transferences from stage to screen with exciting supporting roles in hits including The Social Network and the Coen brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis and taking the lead role opposite Mila Kunis in Friends With Benefits.

Beyoncé successfully combined both singing and acting in the musical drama, Dreamgirls, and also tried her hand at pure acting in everyone's favourite detective film, The Pink Panther and in American thriller, Obsessed

Of course, there are some popstars that are unlikely to ever find themselves in Oscar contention, such as Justin Bieber following his role in two episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation back in 2010, and Joss Stone's slightly more substantial TV role as Anne of Cleves in The Tudors. But which serious fan of The Spice Girls didn't love their whirlwind musical comedy Spice World? And who didn't enjoy Britney Spears' turn in the girls on tour comedy Crossroads

Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock has just recently discovered how far some fans will go to come into contact with their idols as a man broke into her Beverly Hills home in the early hours on Tuesday. Despite the apparent exclusivity and subsequent security that Beverly Hills affords inhabitants, Bullock’s run-in with the obsessive fan proves that they will often go to ridiculous measures in order to gain recognition from the subject of their adoration. It also presents a worrying security concern as a lapse in mental health often fuels these celebrity obsessions. Most famously, John Hinckley Jr’s assassination attempt on then President, Ronald Raegan, was seen by Hinckley as a way of courting the attention of actress Jodie Foster. But to have a fan invade one’s personal space and most intimate of dwellings is a unsettling notion for most people, never mind those of the celebrity calibre. Here are a selection of unfortunate celebs who’ve been subject to break-ins, robberies and warped fans who got a little too close for comfort.

Yes Sir Boss - Mrs #1 Feat. Joss Stone

Bristol six-piece Yes Sir Boss are set to release their brand new single featuring Joss Stone 'Mrs #1' on April 15th 2013. It's the second single from their 2012 debut album 'Desperation State' released on Stoned Records.

The accompanying music video is a home-movie style collection of footage of the band generally messing around and having a laugh with their Grammy winning new collaborator both on and off the stage. It's a wonderful touch that adds to the upbeat mood on this brilliant funk-rock track. Joss Stone's legendary soul voice adds an infectious pop flair to the track and contrasts beautifully with lead singer Matt Sellors's throaty vocals. Matt has admitted that he was pleased with the results despite not initially writing the track as a duet. 'The addition of female vocals seemed to add clarity to the lyrics, and in a way, make the song complete', he said.

Murder Accused Man In Joss Stone Trial Kept Death Notes Diary

Joss Stone

One of the two men accused of plotting to kill the singer Joss Stone reportedly wrote a diary that included notes with the words “death,” “rob,” and “injure” in. Junior Bradshaw, 32 and Kevin Liverpool, 35, were arrested a few miles from Stone’s house in Devon, back in June 2011.

Liverpool was the accused man alleged to have kept the sadistic diary, which included reminder lists for himself, to buy items such as a semi-automatic gun, a silencer, a “ninja sword” and infrared equipment, according to a BBC report. He also left himself notes in the diary as a reminder to buy a hooded top, car insurance, a safe and to open a bank account. He had also included details of Joss Stone’s place of birth, a biography of her career in the music industry and referred to her as “princess.” They took a dislike to Stone in particular because of her connections to the Royal Family. In the diary, there were references made to the harm that they allegedly intended to do to Joss, with urban slang terms such as “wet” (meaning to repeatedly stab someone until their clothes are soaked with blood) and “popo” which is a reference to police.

The pair are on trial at Exeter Crown Court, where the jury are hearing the evidence. Both men have denied the charges of conspiracy to murder, rob and cause grievous bodily harm.
