Joss Whedon To Direct Stand-Alone 'Batgirl' Movie

Joss Whedon

Superhero movie director Joss Whedon is set to bring Batgirl to the big screen for the first time, in a stand-alone movie that will fit in the DC cinematic universe.

While no casting decisions or release dates yet decided upon, Variety reported on Thursday (March 30th) that Whedon is set to write, direct and produce the film for Warner Bros.

It will mark the first time that Batgirl has ever appeared in a central role in a feature film, after her character was first introduced in the DC comic book universe in the 1960s. Batgirl is the alter ego of Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Batman’s ally Commissioner James Gordon.

Joss Whedon Reflects As We Celebrate 20 Years Since Buffy Summers First Hit Our Screens

Joss Whedon Sarah Michelle Gellar Buffy The Vampire Slayer

It's been 20 years since 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' first hit our screens, and the Joss Whedon classic still has a huge fandom and a lasting legacy 14 years after it ended. It was the show that first brought vampires to the small screen in a contemporary setting and was a cornerstone in the creation of bad-ass female TV characters.

Sarah Michelle GellarSarah Michelle Gellar starred in 'Buffy'

Creator Joss has taken this 20 year anniversary to reflect on each of the seven seasons of the phenomenal show; a show that spawned an equally popular spin-off, 'Angel', and propelled Sarah Michelle Gellar to international fame. The idea for the show, which started out as a box office flop of the same name in 1992, came to Joss when he grew tired of trite 80s horror films.

Joss Whedon Explains He Felt Like "Miserable Failure" When 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron' Was Released

Joss Whedon Mark Ruffalo

A year after he guided the massive Avengers: Age of Ultron to the big screen and washed his hands once and for all of blockbuster sequels, director Joss Whedon has at last spoken about his negative reaction to the Marvel movie’s release at the time.

When the superhero sequel was released in May last year, many fans initially reacted with indifference to the movie in comparison to its 2012 predecessor The Avengers. While it was far from disastrous, taking $1.4 billion in box offices worldwide, Whedon himself said some pretty negative things about the project during the subsequent press tour.

Before 'Batman V Superman', Wonder Woman's Difficult Journey To The Big Screen

Gal Gadot Zack Snyder George Miller Joss Whedon Megan Gale

Both Batman and Superman have seen various incarnations on the big screen, but in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice they will be joined by a superhero whose film debut is long overdue, Wonder Woman. The story of Wonder Woman’s journey to the big screen could be a movie in itself, as until now writers, directors and studios have tried and failed to make the heroine leap from comic books to film.

Wonder Woman’s live-action debut came in a 1974 TV movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby, but she wasn’t quite as comic book fans had expected. This Wonder Woman was blonde and had a very questionable costume, which featured some blue leggings and a red coat with blue and white starred sleeves.

Also, guess which movie had the biggest opening. No, really. Guess. I’ll help you out. It was The Avengers, in 2012, with $207 million. That one went on to earn over $1,5 billion worldwide. The moral of the story is that Marvel wins yet again.

So Here's Why Loki Is Not In 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron', According To Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon Tom Hiddleston Idris Elba

Did you walk away from Avengers: Age of Ultron feeling a little less than satisfied? Like perhaps there was a big Loki shaped hole in the movie and when it was all over you felt like you'd been cheated? Well if you’d been wondering why the film was sadly Loki-less, director Joss Whedon has offered an explanation which might help you get over it (a little).

Tom HiddlestonTom Hiddleston plays Loki in the Thor films.

To recap, Loki fans (and they’re a pretty hardcore bunch) were under the impression that Tom Hiddleston would appear in Avengers: Age Of Ultron thanks to a ‘spoiler’ from Heimdall actor Idris Elba. Speaking to The Telegraph in November, Elba mentioned he’d filmed a scene for Age of Ultron with Hiddleston and Thor aka Chris Hemsworth.

Marvel kicked off promotion for Avengers: Age of Ultron early at SDCC and, as with everything else related to the franchise, they made a massive production of it. Director/nerd king Joss Whedon also skipped the convention, since he couldn’t fly out from London after his knee surgery.

Steady Avengers Fans, Joss Whedon Hasn't Signed On For Third Movie

Joss Whedon has yet to sign on to direct the third Avengers movie and is concentrating on helming the sequel Age of Ultron.

At the press junket for Thor: The Dark World, Screenrant asked Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige about Whedon's involvement in the franchise beyond writing and directing the second movie.

"It's still being determined," he replied, "All of his efforts right now are in what he's doing for us primarily, obviously, writing and prepping Age of Ultron but also in reading the drafts of the films in phase 2, watching early cuts and a) to inform him where the characters are going to end up in the beginning of Age of Ultron and also to get his input and his wisdom into all of these. After A Successful Start, ABC's Agents Of Shield Gets Full Season Pickup

Clark Gregg Joss Whedon

Good news for hardcore Joss Whedon fans and those impressed with his newest show, Agents of SHIELD – the Marvel series has gotten a full-season pickup from ABC. This means that the company has bought the rights to the second half of the season, rounding out Agent’s first run to a full 22 episodes. The show is the third new fall show to get a full-season pickup and so far it’s ABC’s premiere investment.

Joss Whedon, Saturn Awards
Whedon has practically struck gold with this one.

While SHIELD opened to smashing ratings, having the best opening for a drama series in the past four years, the switch from its Thursday premiere to a less profitable Tuesday 8pm slot caused a notable dip in ratings. Nevertheless, last week’s episode averaged a respectable 7.9 million viewers, making Agents of SHIELD the second highest rated show of the hour. In addition, the show averaged 2.9 million in that mythical, oh-so-coveted by advertisers 18-49 age range.

The Buildup Is Almost Over For Marvel And ABC's "Agents Of SHIELD"

Clark Gregg Joss Whedon

The premiere of Marvel’s eagerly anticipated series Agents of SHIELD is fast approaching – the show will air tonight, September 24th at 8PM. Agents will focus on the work of the non-superhero part of Marvel comics – the men and women working for the fictional organization SHIELD, which we’ve gotten a glimpse at with Nick Fury, Maria Hill and, of course, Clark Gregg’s agent Phil Coulson within the Avengers franchise. Agent Coulson will be a central character in this adaptation of the Marvel universe, the brainchild of Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and the latter’s wife, Maurissa Tancharoen. The trio has already achieved a lot of success together with the Emmy-winning web musical, Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, as well as the FX series Dollhouse.

Clark Gregg, Much Ado About Nothing Premiere
Gregg is no stranger to the Marvel Univers, nor to working with Joss Whedon in particular.

Before the highly anticipated premiere, Jed Whedon and Tancharoen spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about working on Agents this time. The two spoke about their experiences of working within the sci-fi genre in general and within the Marvel universe specifically. One thing even casual Marvel fans know is that the company generally adheres to a very strict code of discretion across all its platforms. However Agents of SHIELD has so far been kept under especially tight wraps. Of course, fans at Comic-Con and, more recently, those tuning into ESPN have been treated to special previews of the season and there have been some unclear hints as to the characters, villains and overall plot. However, Marvel wouldn’t be the marketing machine that it is, if its marketing execs didn’t know to keep the most crucial information secret, sometimes even requiring blood oaths, according to Tancharoen.

That sounds pretty excellent.

After numerous attempt to lure Christian Bale out of Bat-retirement, including a reported $50 million contract offer, Affleck was chosen as his successor following numerous meetings and screening tests by studio bosses. Those involved in the film, including director Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. boss Greg Silverman, agreed that the appointment was the correct one, with Snyder telling THR, "Ben provides an interesting counterbalance to Henry's Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. "Much Ado About Nothing" - Joss Whedon's Take On The Bard

Joss Whedon Nathan Fillion Clark Gregg

These days Joss Whedon is known as the clever writer/director behind Marvel’s giant, over-produced “Avengers” But before all that, he was known to fans as the mind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the DIY viral sensation Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Much Ado About Nothing, Whedon’s present-day adaptation of the Shakesperean play, sees the director return to his roots with a film, which relies not on a huge budget and, admittedly, well-executed action scenes, but on sheer wit and goodwill. We see some familiar collaborators of Whedon’s – Clark Gregg, aka agent Phil Coulson, plays governer Leonato, while Nathan Fillion does a hilarious job as Constable Dogberry.

The film opens with the brave and accomplished officer Benedick (Alexis Denisof) arriving at the home of governor Leonato (Clark Gregg), whose daughter Hero (Jillian Morgese) soon comes into the sights of Benedick’s comrade, Claudio (Fran Kranz). Benedick himself is quite the ladies’ man, however he meets his match in Hero’s witty and willful cousin Beatrice. And, as the phrase “meets his match” usually bids, it doesn’t take long for the two to fall in love. It’s a classic Shakespearean tale, retold in Whedon’s incredibly appropriate style. What’s more, Whedon’s adaptation finds poetic resonance with many current issues. Modern society’s rampant abuse of technology, for example is satirized by way of the messengers delivering plot twists via iPhones instead of scrolls, and the occasional clever wordplay (“Forsooth! A Bluetooth!”). Whedon manages to take good ol’ Shakespeare, put him through the mill of his own humor and what comes out is, unsurprisingly, a brilliant, if low-key, adaptation.

Robert Downey Jr. Confirmed For Avengers 2 And 3. Not Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr Joss Whedon

The big wheels keep on turning at Marvel, as Robert Downey Jr. has just signed a two-movie deal with the studio – for Avengers 2 and 3. Notice anything lacking? That’s right, no new Iron Man. So our favorite genius billionaire playboy philanthropist Tony Stark will definitely be back for the next Avengers, as well as Marvel’s ominously titled Phase Three – maybe not in his own film though.

Both the actor and Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige have refused to comment directly on the omission, according to InsideMovies, though Downey has been hinting lately that at 48, his days as Iron Man are numbered. Feige’s statement on the deal didn’t offer much hope in that direction either: “I believe there will be a fourth Iron Man film and a fifth and a sixth and a 10th and a 20th,” the producer said. “I see no reason why Tony Stark can’t be as evergreen as James Bond. Or Batman for that matter. Or Spider-Man. I think Iron Man is a character just like that.” Feige declined any further comment Thursday. Except all of those characters have been played by several different actors over the years. So if that’s the fate of Iron Man, it doesn’t look like Downey will be reprising the role, beyond appearing in Avengers.

This new version of Shakespeare's romantic farce looks like it was shot on video in the filmmaker's house with his friends over the course of about two weeks, which is exactly the case. It's lively and funny, and occasionally also warm and emotional, but the uneven tone never quite comes together to bring out the passion in the characters. An enjoyable experiment, the film keeps us entertained but refuses to spring to life.

Set in present-day suburbia, the story opens as Don Pedro (Diamond) and his henchmen Benedick and Claudio (Denisof and Kranz) deliver rival gang leader Don John (Maher) to his mob boss brother Leonato (Gregg). A confirmed bachelor, Benedick continues his verbal sparring with Leonato's feisty love-rejecting daughter Beatrice (Acker), while Claudio seeks help in wooing her sweet cousin Hero (Morgese). But Leonato decides to have some fun here, tricking Benedick and Beatrice into falling in love with each other. Meanwhile, the imprisoned Don John is plotting to destroy his brother, while a bumbling detective (Fillion) tries to figure out what's up.

Filmmaker Whedon assembles his cast from actors he worked with in everything from Buffy to The Avengers, creating a loose, relaxed atmosphere that makes the film easy to watch, even though it's in black and white and is spoken in Shakespearean dialect. On the other hand, this kind of mutes the play's romantic highs and tragic lows, evening everything out into a gentle comedy of manners with slapstick touches. Part of the problem is that, if you're unfamiliar with these actors, it's not easy to tell them apart as they are dressed in identical black suits. But the cast is excellent, delivering the dialog with off-handed precision.

'Avengers' Director Joss Whedon Opens Up About His Creative Process

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon has been an institution for his niche group of fans ever since the early 90s. But now, after the phenomenal success of last year’s “The Avengers” the quirky, workaholic director has become a household names. Which means he can also afford to work on pet projects like “Much Ado About Nothing” – Whedon’s Shakespeare adaptation, which was adapted and cast in a month, in between principle photography and post-production for The Avengers, according to Whendon’s recent interview with Moviefone. We weren’t kidding when we said workaholic.

But Whedon is taking it (a little) easier for the filming of The Avengers 2. He has his reasons for it, too: I enter upon "Avengers 2" with a different mindset than I did the first one. I feel like I know so well what it is that I want to accomplish, and like "Much Ado," I now have a real sense of the troop I'm working with and the strictures and the opportunities. My little passion, sidebar project comes out May 1, 2015.”

As for Much Ado, the film, which, in his own words, helped Whedon unlock “something very pure in me that I'd cut myself off from, of just enjoying every moment of the process,” is now in the hands of the critics, but both they and the few movie goers (Much Ado only saw a limited release) seem to be thrilled with the adaptation.

ABC Debut Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D Clip! [Trailer]

Joss Whedon

The first teaser trailer for new TV series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has been previewed by the comic book giants and it looks like it’s going to be just as action-packed as you’re all anticipating.

Now the clip is just 30 seconds or so long, but even in that time frame it fits in plenty of high-tailing, high risk, explosive action, while in the background Agent Coulson – played by Clark Gregg – says "We work the cases that S.H.I.E.L.D. hasn't classified: The strange, the unknown," adding "It's not just spy vs. spy anymore. The whole world is in on the action." The footage provides first glimpses of the stars of the forthcoming series, Ming-Na, Chloe Bennet and Brett Dalton and looks at Hulk as well as Thor’s hammer and Captain America’s shield. This is going to be pure TV porn for Marvel fans we reckon.

Is Joss Whedon Really Getting $100 Million For Avengers 2?

Joss Whedon Robert Downey Jr

The internet lit up on Tuesday after Deadline.com reported director Joss Whedon is getting a deal worth $100 million from Disney for the Avengers sequel and various other projects. It effectively meant Whedon was the highest paid director in the business, thought the filmmaker took to his personal blog to refute the report, though admitted he was making "A LOT" from the new film.

"I was going to let it slide, but I've got this sour taste in my mouth. (Mmmm, lemonade!)," he wrote, explaining, "Some facts are not facts. I'm not going to go into the whole thing, but jeepers, I'm not getting $100 mil on Avengers 2. If I were, I would come on this site and laugh and laugh and laugh. I'm not making Downey money. I'm making A LOT, which is exciting. I'm not pretending to be a poor farmer, an Everyman, an ANYman. But that number is nuts." His reference to Robert Downey Jr hinted that the Hollywood star probably did get the numbers suggested by Deadline for the first Avengers movie. It is known that the actor had a contract for a share of the profits from the smash-hit movie but the original speculated figure of $50 million is "more like $70 million-$80 million" according to the website.

The second Avengers movie is set for release in 2015 and if the trend of big-budget sequels outperforming the originals continues, it could be potentially record the biggest box-office numbers, ever.

'The Avengers 2' Heads To UK's Pinewood Studios

Robert Downey Jr Chris Hemsworth Chris Evans Jeremy Renner Scarlett Johansson Samuel L Jackson Mark Ruffalo Joss Whedon

Hollywood comes to London for the shooting of 'The Avengers' sequel which has a release date of May 1st 2015.

Despite 'The Avengers' being shot completely in the US, 'The Avengers 2' will cross overseas to hit Pinewood-Shepperton Studios in London, England where they will begin shooting this summer. And they're not the only major superhero film to make it to the UK; 'Thor: The Dark World' and Marvel's new movie starring Chris Pratt 'Guardians of the Galaxy' are also due to be shooting there this year - that's a lot of comic book action for one studio!

While producers of 'The Avengers 2' are keeping pretty much keeping the entire movie under wraps for now, we can be pretty certain that we will see a returning cast ensemble of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk.

No Hulk Movie: Joss Whedon Mercilessly Destroys The Hopes Of Fanboys Everywhere

Joss Whedon Mark Ruffalo

No, no, there won’t be a solo Hulk movie following The Avengers 2.

So says Joss Whedon anyway, but we’re inclined to believe him, since, you know, the nerds follow the word of their god. The rumor was first spread by Latino Review, with the blog first describing it as a “SUPER BOWL EXCLUSIVE”. Well, no luck with that. When put on the spot about a possible addition to the franchise with Bruce Banner/ The Hulk in the central role, Whedon had this to say: "Well, I’m really not supposed to comment, but no, that’s nonsense." Sounds like a firm no to us. Then again, one can always hope that it’s all just an elaborate rouse (doesn’t that word make it sound so much cooler?) to put overly-excited fans off the scent? Pretty improbable, but it’s always a possibility, after Marvel boss Kevin Feige’s conflicting statements on the matter.

Mitt Romney Set To Provide A 'Nightmare Zombie Wasteland', Says Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon has already envisioned a future filled with vampires, in his smash '90s series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yes, just 10 years on from the end of that series, our cinemas and televisions are overrun with the longtoothed creatures (all of which have now got a bit long-in-the-tooth). Now his predictions have taken a more political turn, as he has made a video in strong, well thought out support of Republican candidate Mitt Romney. What's his focus? Mitt's own strong and well thought out plans, perfectly suitable for a zombie apocalypse.

Whedon begs us to ask some very important questions, including "Am I ready for the purity and courage Mitt Romney's apocalyptic vision"? He endorses Romney because "he's not afraid to face rattling grasping hordes of supplements because that's how he sees poor people already". Okay, okay, so maybe Whedon's video is satirical. Nevertheless, he really does make some very important points about Romney.

Whedon notes Romney's "commitment on governed corporate privilege that will nosedive this economy into true insolvency and chaos the kind of chaos you can't buy back" and most importantly points out that "Romney's ready to make that deep rollbacks in healthcare, education, social services [and] reproductive rights that will guarantee poverty, unemployment, overpopulation disease [and] rioting; all crucial elements in creating a nightmare zombie wasteland."
