The Normal Heart Review

Excellent

It's taken nearly 30 years to bring Larry Kramer's passionate, award-winning play to the screen, but this high-calibre production is a genuine stunner. Even if it was made for television, it carries the gut-punch of a great drama, adding a deeply personal perspective to recent Aids epidemic documentaries like How to Survive a Plague and We Were Here.

At the centre is the outspoken writer Ned (Mark Ruffalo), who has already ruffled feathers in the 1981 New York gay community with his rants against promiscuity. So when a close friend (Jonathan Groff) comes down with what has been labelled "gay cancer", he has a new cause to get angry about. He gathers his buddies including Bruce, Tommy and Mickey (Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons and Joe Mantello) to form an action group, working with Emma (Julia Roberts), a doctor who suspects that the disease is sexually transmitted. But the community isn't willing to give up its hard-fought sexual freedoms. And as Ned falls for Times journalist Felix (Matt Bomer), he becomes increasingly outraged that the government is doing nothing while thousands of people die.

Kramer's script is so intimate and raw that it brings the characters to vivid life, giving each of the actors a show-stopping scene of his or her own. Ruffalo's complex and remarkably transparent performance holds everything together beautifully. Ned's relationships and confrontations all pack a powerful punch, from the romantic scenes with Bomer's lively Felix to darker strain with his brother (Alfred Molina) or an all-out battle with a politician (Corey Stoll). And Roberts gets some pungent scenes of her own, most notably a fiery rant against a room full of callous congressmen.

Mark Ruffalo Julia Roberts

Last night (May 25) HBO viewers witnessed Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo take on his most challenging role to date, as a gay rights activist living in the early years of the aids epidemic of the 1980s. In The Normal Heart, Ruffalo stars alongside Matt Bomer and Julia Roberts as Ned Weeks, a man desperate to draw attention to the aids crisis which is plaguing the gay community.

The character is based on real life activist Larry Kramer, who also wrote the film’s script based on his 1985 play of the same name. In order to prepare himself to take on the challenging role, Ruffalo spent time with Kramer, hearing his story and reading his works as well as remembering his own feelings witnessing the AIDS crisis in the early 80s. “It felt like a pandemic. And I was young, so I was still idealistic, and it was jarring to see the inhumane response to it all,” he told the Sioux City Journal. “It didn’t compute. But Larry was right, I didn’t fully understand how deep it went.”

Shirley Temple

RIP Shirley Temple: For younger generations, the death of Shirley Temple may not be as heart-rending as for those who grew up with the adorable, depression-era actress and watched her help pull America out of its slump. Temple died peacefully at home aged 85 on the 10th February after a life of reinventing herself and bringing joy to others through her many talents. You may or may not know that Temple was huge in China, but why? Find out here. Shirley Temple: 1928-2014.

Samuel L Jackson Makes Himself Clear: Samuel L Jackson has been involved in what was arguably the biggest foot-in-mouth moment of the year so far. In an interview with KTLA's so-called "entertainment reporter," Sam Rubin, Jackson was asked about his recent Super Bowl commercial...only, the Robocop actor didn't have a Super Bowl commercial, leading to quizzical stares and the immortal quote "what Super Bowl commercial?" as it dawned on the star that Rubin had him confused with fellow black actor, Laurence Fishburne. Read about the fall-out and watch the toe-curling video here.

Motes, who was 37 when she died, was found dead in a bathtub in the LA residence she shared with her fiancé, John Dilbeck. Though it has not yet been determined whether Motes' death was accidental or a suicide, indications of a suicide note - reported to be eight pages long - was found at the apartment.

Nancy and Julia shared the same mother but not their father. Since Nancy's death, Dilbeck has felt compelled to deny speculation that his fiancée was a drug addict after reports that Julia has tried to save her half-sister dozens of times by encouraging her to seek help in rehab. However, a neighbour and apparent close friend of Nancy's has claimed that the TV worker's death wasn't the result of recklessness: It was "not a Philip Seymour Hoffman thing' but a planned suicide," they said.

August: Osage County Review

Extraordinary

Tracy Letts adapts his own prize-winning play into a blistering depiction of one of cinema's most dysfunctional families ever. It's still rather theatrical, throwing a mob of top actors into a room for what feels like a fight to the death, but it's so well written and so beautifully observed by the actors that we can't look away. And of course Meryl Streep walks off with the show.

Everything kicks off when Beverly Weston (Shepard) goes missing, leaving his ruthlessly straight-talking, pill-popping wife Violet (Streep) to assemble the family in their rambling Oklahoma home. They have three equally feisty daughters: Barbara (Roberts) is a tightly wound bundle of anger with an estranged husband (McGregor) and surly teen daughter (Breslin) in tow; Karen (Lewis) is a free-spirited floater with yet another random boyfriend (Mulroney); and Ivy (Nicholson) is fed up with being the dutiful daughter who stayed close to home. Also on hand is Violet's sister Mattie Fae (Martindale), whose husband (Cooper) is the family patriarch now that Beverly is gone, which means their son (Cumberbatch) feels even more useless than normal.

What plot there is centres on skeletons rattling out of closets and relationships imploding spectacularly. The film is a series of brutally intense encounters between people who probably still love each other in vaguely undefined ways and express it through bitter bursts of witty cruelty. Streep has the meatiest role as the imperious Violet, who knows a lot more than she's letting on. And her chief rival is Barbara, played with unnerving intensity by Roberts. The only person we even remotely like is Mattie Fae, and the always-superb Martindale finds all kinds of layers in the character.

'August: Osage County' Reviews Preoccupied With Adaptation Issues

Meryl Streep Ewan McGregor Julia Roberts

August: Osage County appears to have all the qualities needed to make a movie to combat January blues: a stellar cast, strong female characters and enough gentle humour to rival a Richard Curtis script. But do critics agree?

Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts stars in August: Osage County.

Based on the play by Tracy Letts, the film follows a group of strong, and somewhat eccentric, women in the Weston family and is centred on their Midwest childhood home at the time of a family crisis. Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Margo Martindale (The Americans), Julia Roberts (Eat, Pray, Love), Juliette Lewis (Open Road) and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) star as the women of the Weston family. Ewan McGregor (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen); Dermot Mulroney (New Girl); and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) appear in supporting roles.
