Julia Roberts

At nearly 50 years old, Julia Roberts is still winning awards for her beauty. This year marks the fifth time the actress has been named the World's Most Beautiful Woman - quite the record as the title has only previously been snapped up twice by the same person.

Capping off a rather horrid 2016 for Johnny Depp is the news that he’s been judged by Forbes to be Hollywood’s most overpaid actor for the second year in a row, following a handful of big-budget disappointments at the box office this year.

The 53 year old megastar topped Forbes’ annual list of actors whose movies have underperformed at cinemas compared to their budgets, after his much vaunted sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass flopped at the box office in comparison to its predecessor.

Money Monster Review

Excellent

A sleekly made thriller with a sparky sense of humour, this is also a rare action movie that has something important to say. Centred around the corruption in the political and banking systems, the film is just as enlightening as The Big Short, but it's a lot more fun to watch. And it's directed by Jodie Foster as a sharp media satire that seems to be skimming along the surface but is actually taking no prisoners.

It's set on Wall Street, where TV guru Lee (George Clooney) hosts his financial advice show Money Monster, directed by his long-time friend Patty (Julia Roberts). Then in the middle of a broadcast, Lee is interrupted live on-air by Kyle (Jack O'Connell), who is consumed with anger because Lee's investment suggestion resulted in the loss of his life savings. Kyle's real target is the banking executive Walt (Dominic West), who has blamed the wipe-out of share prices on a computer glitch. But something about that story doesn't hold water. While Kyle threatens Lee live, a media storm develops around them. And Patty digs into the story with the help of hackers in Korea, Iceland and South Africa, feeding information to Lee through his earpiece.

As the situation spirals out of control, Foster maintains a terrific sense of balance between the edgy suspense and the jagged comedy. This works because, even amid the virtual globe-hopping, she keeps the focus tightly on the interaction between Lee, Patty and Kyle. Clooney and Roberts aren't hugely stretched by their roles, but they are able to add likeable moments of subtle revelation and interaction along the way. O'Connell is the heart of the film, with an impassioned performance that's surprisingly moving. And of course it's easy for everyone in the audience to sympathise with Kyle's frustration about a system in which bankers and politicians pocket billions while the average person struggles to keep their head above water.

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts says an awareness of social media is important.

Secret In Their Eyes Review

Excellent

It's rare for an American remake to be scruffier than the original, but this film is an intriguingly messier take on the super-slick, hugely engaging 2009 Oscar winner from Argentina. Filmmaker Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) has stripped down the tone and revamped the plot considerably, replacing the original film's big emotional surges with grittier intrigue and subtle intelligence.

The story begins as New York security expert Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) returns to Los Angeles, picking up the trail of an unsolved murder he worked on 13 years earlier when he was an FBI agent. His former colleague Jess (Julia Roberts) is still in the FBI, while Claire (Nicole Kidman) is now the city's district attorney. Together, they secretly begin looking into the case again, tracking the suspect (Joe Cole) through the city and dodging interference from fellow agent Reg (Michael Kelly). But the investigation doesn't go as planned, jeopardising all of them in their current jobs. And Ray is having trouble sorting out his relational history with both Jess and Claire.

These three fine actors cleverly play with the delicate tensions both between them and in the larger picture. At the centre, Ejiofor is gripping as a man of conscience who is tenaciously hoping for justice in a seriously murky situation. Kidman adds a slightly cheeky tone as a woman who has achieved professional success but never forgets the dodgy choices she has made. And Roberts gets the showier role, losing all of her Hollywood glamour as the tomboyish Jess, a woman with layer after layer of emotional turmoil. The chemistry between them is fascinating, even if the filmmaking approach feels dry and aloof. But there's so much going on in both the story and characters that it's impossible to look away. Nothing that happens is quite what it seems to be, and the big ideas linger in the background, leaving plenty for us to chew on.

Money Monster Trailer

If you're looking for news on what stocks to buy, you switch on the TV and watch Lee Gate's show - he's the most popular presenter on the Financial News Network and is full of good tips for his viewers but what happens when one the stocks he hypes up mysteriously crashes out it leaves some of his ex-viewers penniless.

Kyle Budwell was one of those people when Kyle believes he has no other option, he takes Lee and his production team hostage live on TV. Between the presenter and his producer (Patty Fenn) they must find a way to satisfy both their captor and the special forces put on standby who are ready to storm the set.

Money Monster sees Julia Roberts and George Clooney team up once again and also sees Jodie Foster make a return to directing after her 2011 film The Beaver.

Secret In Their Eyes Reveals Common Ground For Kidman And Roberts

Julia Roberts Nicole Kidman

Secret in Their Eyes is the American remake of the Oscar-winning 2009 Argentine film. Oscar winners themselves, the two actresses both had break-out roles in 1989: Kidman in Dead Calm and Roberts in Steel Magnolias. Over the decades, they met at various social functions, but only really connected on the set of Secret in Their Eyes, discovering that they share a positive approach to family and career.

"I am a genuinely and deeply happy person," says Roberts. "And as life goes on, you realize what great fortune that is - to feel like you just have the natural chemistry of joy."

She told ‘Good Morning America’ back in 2010 "I was very, very drunk. It was a very, very long time ago, when only sailors and Hell's Angels were tattooed, honestly, and prisoners. And I decided to get a tattoo because it was the most shocking thing I could think of doing." Julia Roberts Honors George Clooney, Or 'George Looney' At Britannia Awards

George Clooney Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts honored her great friend George Clooney at BAFTA's Britannia Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday night (November 9, 2013), meaning Sacha Baron Cohen accidentally killing an old woman wasn't the only notable highlight.

Roberts presented her close pal with the Stanley Kubrick Award for Excellence in Film, joking, "I'm normally in my second REM cycle by now so let's get this done," after being pushed on-stage in a wheelchair while barefooted.

The jokes went on. "There are two obvious reasons why I was chosen to do this: one, Brad Pitt was out of town. Two, Matt Damon, he's in town, but he was unavailable," said Roberts, to rousing laughter, according to E! Online.

Sacha Baron Cohen not only left the Beverly Hilton with the highest honour awarded for comedy by the BAFTA-LA ‘s annual Britannia Awards, but also left with the audience either still in shock or holding on to their sides with laughter following an inspired practical joke. Los Angeles' British alliance was out in force for the Saturday (9 Nov.) night ceremony, and there were even a few non-Brit Hollywood heavyweights doing their best to pretent to be from the other side of the Atlantic for the awards show.

Airing on BBC America on Sunday (10 Nov.) night, host Rob Brydon had the job of handling the more raucous than usual crowd, which had plenty to do with Cohen's stunt. It began when Salma Hayek came on stage with an elderly woman to present the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award For Excellence In Comedy award. Confined to a wheelchair, she was identified as Grace Collington, an actress she said appeared with Charlie Chaplin in 1931′s City Lights when she was just 5-years-old. She very believably told the audience, “At 87, she’s the oldest surviving actor to have worked with Chaplin in a silent movie,” at which point Cohen climbed to the stage to accept the honour. The elderly woman presented Cohen with one of Chaplin's trademark canes, at which point Cohen pushed her from the stage and began his acceptance speech as 'Collington' lied motionless on the ground.

HBO To Produce Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart

Julia Roberts Mark Ruffalo Matt Bomer

HBO will produce a brand new adaptation of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart.

The adaptation was first announced by The Hollywood Reporter a year ago, but it looks like it will finally be going into production later this year. The adaptation is helmed by director Ryan Murphy and will star some hefty names in the business – Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer, to name a few. So, the wait might have actually been worth it. The Normal Heart is set to premiere sometime in 2014, but, this being HBO, don’t count on any concrete dates just yet. Nevertheless, the expectations, at least on the network side of things, are pretty great: "We are so proud to be involved with this monumental project,” says HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. “Ryan has assembled an extraordinary cast to bring Larry Kramer’s landmark theatrical achievement to the screen for the first time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this important film to HBO.”

At this point, not much is known about the production, other than the fact that it has some impressive names attached to it. Of course, if 2012 has taught us anything, it is that big names aren’t always a guarantee for success. But, at such an early stage, they are as close as you can get.

Mirror Mirror Review

Good
Both lavishly produced and light-hearted in tone, this fractured fairy tale aspires to be The Princess Bride, and actually gets it right from time to time.

While it's too uneven and corny to be a classic, it's still a lot of fun.

After the King disappears, his daughter Snow White (Collins) is raised by her conniving step-mother (Roberts), who plots with her right-hand man (Lane) to steal the kingdom from Snow. Then handsome Prince Alcott (Hammer) arrives and shakes things up, immediately falling for Snow, which sends the queen into even crazier fits of jealousy. She sends Snow into the woods to be eaten by a mythical beast, but Snow instead befriends a gang of dwarf bandits (Povinelli, Klebba, Saraceno, Prentice, Gnoffo and Woodburn), who teach her how to fight back.

Notting Hill Review

Excellent
Julia Roberts is Julia Roberts - almost - in Notting Hill, a well-crafted romantic comedy from the geniuses behind Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The deceptively simple plot begins when uber-famous film star Anna Scott (Roberts) winds up in William's (Grant) book shop on Notting Hill, something of a British cross between a pre-Disney Times Square and a Moroccan street market. After William accidentally dumps orange juice down Anna's front, an on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again, on-again love affair blossoms.

Excellent
For the uninitiated who know Steven Soderbergh only as the auteur behind such delights as Traffic and the Ocean's Eleven remake, know that Soderbergh was once far better known as a god of the indie film scene, the man behind movies like sex, lies & videotape, King of the Hill, and Schizopolis.

The Mexican Review

Good

Brad Pitt plays a scatterbrained, indentured mob lackey on a do-or-die delivery assignment. Julia Roberts plays his neurotic, therapy-addicted girlfriend who made him promise he'd get out of the rackets. James Gandolfini is a hypersensitive crybaby hit man who kidnaps Julia to make sure Brad doesn't get any bright ideas about selling the antique pistol he's sent to fetch from south of the border.

This winning talent combo and a very droll, quite original script make "The Mexican" the first sublime cinematic bonbon of 2001 -- a consistently chuckle-packed caper comedy with charm and repartee to spare.

Directed by Gore Verbinski ("Mouse Hunt"), who effortlessly navigates several blindsiding but fine-tuned plot twists, "The Mexican" features Pitt as Jerry, a hapless, handsome perpetual screw-up who has been doing odd jobs for a mafioso to atone for causing a traffic accident -- an accident that inadvertently landed the kingpin in the clink (there was a body in his trunk at the time).
