Money Monster Review

Excellent

A sleekly made thriller with a sparky sense of humour, this is also a rare action movie that has something important to say. Centred around the corruption in the political and banking systems, the film is just as enlightening as The Big Short, but it's a lot more fun to watch. And it's directed by Jodie Foster as a sharp media satire that seems to be skimming along the surface but is actually taking no prisoners.

It's set on Wall Street, where TV guru Lee (George Clooney) hosts his financial advice show Money Monster, directed by his long-time friend Patty (Julia Roberts). Then in the middle of a broadcast, Lee is interrupted live on-air by Kyle (Jack O'Connell), who is consumed with anger because Lee's investment suggestion resulted in the loss of his life savings. Kyle's real target is the banking executive Walt (Dominic West), who has blamed the wipe-out of share prices on a computer glitch. But something about that story doesn't hold water. While Kyle threatens Lee live, a media storm develops around them. And Patty digs into the story with the help of hackers in Korea, Iceland and South Africa, feeding information to Lee through his earpiece.

As the situation spirals out of control, Foster maintains a terrific sense of balance between the edgy suspense and the jagged comedy. This works because, even amid the virtual globe-hopping, she keeps the focus tightly on the interaction between Lee, Patty and Kyle. Clooney and Roberts aren't hugely stretched by their roles, but they are able to add likeable moments of subtle revelation and interaction along the way. O'Connell is the heart of the film, with an impassioned performance that's surprisingly moving. And of course it's easy for everyone in the audience to sympathise with Kyle's frustration about a system in which bankers and politicians pocket billions while the average person struggles to keep their head above water.

Secret In Their Eyes Review

Excellent

It's rare for an American remake to be scruffier than the original, but this film is an intriguingly messier take on the super-slick, hugely engaging 2009 Oscar winner from Argentina. Filmmaker Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) has stripped down the tone and revamped the plot considerably, replacing the original film's big emotional surges with grittier intrigue and subtle intelligence.

The story begins as New York security expert Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) returns to Los Angeles, picking up the trail of an unsolved murder he worked on 13 years earlier when he was an FBI agent. His former colleague Jess (Julia Roberts) is still in the FBI, while Claire (Nicole Kidman) is now the city's district attorney. Together, they secretly begin looking into the case again, tracking the suspect (Joe Cole) through the city and dodging interference from fellow agent Reg (Michael Kelly). But the investigation doesn't go as planned, jeopardising all of them in their current jobs. And Ray is having trouble sorting out his relational history with both Jess and Claire.

These three fine actors cleverly play with the delicate tensions both between them and in the larger picture. At the centre, Ejiofor is gripping as a man of conscience who is tenaciously hoping for justice in a seriously murky situation. Kidman adds a slightly cheeky tone as a woman who has achieved professional success but never forgets the dodgy choices she has made. And Roberts gets the showier role, losing all of her Hollywood glamour as the tomboyish Jess, a woman with layer after layer of emotional turmoil. The chemistry between them is fascinating, even if the filmmaking approach feels dry and aloof. But there's so much going on in both the story and characters that it's impossible to look away. Nothing that happens is quite what it seems to be, and the big ideas linger in the background, leaving plenty for us to chew on.

Money Monster Trailer

If you're looking for news on what stocks to buy, you switch on the TV and watch Lee Gate's show - he's the most popular presenter on the Financial News Network and is full of good tips for his viewers but what happens when one the stocks he hypes up mysteriously crashes out it leaves some of his ex-viewers penniless.

Kyle Budwell was one of those people when Kyle believes he has no other option, he takes Lee and his production team hostage live on TV. Between the presenter and his producer (Patty Fenn) they must find a way to satisfy both their captor and the special forces put on standby who are ready to storm the set.

Money Monster sees Julia Roberts and George Clooney team up once again and also sees Jodie Foster make a return to directing after her 2011 film The Beaver.

The Dame said she got it when she was very drunk, a long time ago before tattoos were cool and mainstream, which is why she hates it now. She told ‘Good Morning America’ back in 2010 "I was very, very drunk. It was a very, very long time ago, when only sailors and Hell's Angels were tattooed, honestly, and prisoners. And I decided to get a tattoo because it was the most shocking thing I could think of doing." George Clooney, Sacha Baron Cohen Among Most Colorful Honorees At BAFTA LA Britannia Awards

George Clooney Idris Elba Sacha Baron Cohen Julia Roberts Benedict Cumberbatch

Last night’s BAFTA LA Britannia awards were definitely George Clooney’s time to shine. Except for the prank that actor Sacha Baron Cohen couldn’t help himself from pulling, that is. Clooney and Baron Cohen were both honored alongside a handful of other stars – including Benedict Cumberbatch, Sir Ben Kingsley, Kathryn Bigelow and Idris Elba - for various achievements in film, USA Today reports.

Sacha Baron Cohen, BAFTA LA Britannia Awards
Sacha Baron Cohen accepted the award with grace and... no, not really, but it was pretty funny.

But on to Cohen’s rather startling prank. When the actor went on stage to be presented with the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy, things got very out of hand very quickly. As Baron Cohen accepted the award – a Chaplin-esque cane e from an elderly woman in a wheelchair, introduced as the oldest living actor to have worked with Chaplin himself. In the spirit of the award, the actor did a clumsy little tap dance, during which he tripped, and sent the woman flying to the shock of the attendees. If you’re curious to see the moment, Tune in to the show tonight on BBC America at 9 p.m. ET to see how she fared (she survived, folks, its all good).

'August: Osage County' May Have Ending Change After TIFF Grumbles

Meryl Streep Julia Roberts Juliette Lewis Abigail Breslin Ewan McGregor Benedict Cumberbatch

After premiering at this week's Toronto International Film Festival, it has been speculated that the ending of the Meryl Streep-starring August: Osage County could be changed ahead of its wide release late this winter. Director John Wells adapted Tracy Letts' prize-winning play but made the unfortunate mistake of slightly changing the ending which has caused some discontent at TIFF.

August Osage County
The Relationship Between Streep's Vi And Roberts' Barbara Is Crucial To The Plot.

Those who have seen the play performed onstage will recall that the final scene shows the Weston family's harsh matriarch, Vi sitting alone on the stairs of her now empty house after her daughters can't deal with her constant berating and have left the house. The scene is contemplative and loaded with metaphor, but changes drastically if you take the situation from Julia Roberts' Barbara's view as she's driving away - as Wells chose to do.

With an all-star cast – an overused but truly relevant phrase for this film – and a hit, Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway stage play providing the architecture, August: Osage County looked to be nailed on for Oscar success. But the early Toronto reviews are in, and while it’s hard to find a critic that slates it, a five-star turn around is equally rare.

August: Osage County Trailer

The Weston family know they are probably one of the most dysfunctional families around, but they do understand that sometimes it's best to stick together. Violet Weston is the family matriarch suffering from mouth cancer and heavily addicted to prescription drugs which only gets worse after the apparent suicide of her husband Beverly. As the funeral approaches, Violet's three daughters Barbara, Ivy and Karen and their families arrive at the house they grew up in, along with some other estranged relatives, hoping to get the whole ordeal over and done with fairly quickly. However, things don't go as smoothly as they, perhaps naively, hoped as they discover a whole load of closet skeletons they'd rather have not known about.

'August: Osage County' is a remarkable dark comedy directed by multi-Emmy winning John Wells ('The Company Men') and based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same name by Tracy Letts ('Bug', 'Killer Joe'). It has been produced by George Clooney and Harvey Weinstein and is a warts-and-all story about the trials and tribulations of family affairs, uncovering both the heartwarming and the heartbreaking secrets that underline all families. It is set to be released in the UK on January 3rd 2014.

After Arrest For Drunk Boating, Erin Brockovich Has Issued A Public Apology

Julia Roberts

Erin Brockovich, the high profile legal clerk and environmental accident, was involved in a less flattering incident recently, when she was arrested for drunken boating last Friday. She has since apologized for her behavior in an official statement.

'At no time was the boat away from the dock and there was no public safety risk,' she said in a statement. 'That being said, I take drunk driving very seriously, this was clearly a big mistake. I know better and I am very sorry,' she said about the arrest.

According to the Daily Mail, 52-year-old Brockovich was struggling to dock the boat at Lake Mead, Nevada, when her fumbling attracted the attention of a local game warden. She later explained her actions with an underestimated amount of alcohol.

Erin Brockovich Tries To Moor Boat While Drunk – Sunny Day Is Her Downfall

Julia Roberts

We’ve all been there; it’s a sunny day, we have a few too many spritzers on the boat and forget to eat. Hang on, no, sorry, we’re confused, this is Erin Brokcovich’s life. That’s right, the activist famously portrayed by Julia Roberts tried to moor her boat while having twice the legal blood alcohol level.

A 52-year-old Brokovich was spotted struggling to manoeuvre her boat by a game warden at Las Vegas Boat Harbour near Boulder City. Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Edwin Lyngar said: "She was obviously struggling to put the boat in the slip, and if you've had any experience, it's a simple enough operation. Too many people think drinking and boating go together. We don't have a problem if people drink. Just have a designated operator." What a weekend; she was booked into Clark County Detention Center on Friday night, made bail the next day after posting the required $1k, then released a statement of apology, probably still hungover. "At no time was the boat away from the dock and there was no public safety risk," she said. "That being said, I take drunk driving very seriously, this was clearly a big mistake, I know better and I am very sorry.”

The activist, whose legal battle with Pacific Gas & Electric over the pollution of a Californian town’s water supply was turned into a film, blamed a day in the sun for her nautical naughtiness. "After a day in the sun and with nothing to eat it appears that a couple of drinks had a greater impact than I had realized," she explained.

August: Osage County Unites A Stellar Cast Of Actors, Headed By Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep Julia Roberts Abigail Breslin Ewan McGregor Chris Cooper Sam Shepard

The trailer for August: Osage County hit the airwaves today and, if you didn’t know that was a film you wanted to see, you should now. Generally, just the presence of Meryl Streep on the castlist is enough to get a film onto the list, but August has a lot more going for it as well, with a cast, absolutely packed with star power - Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin, Sam Shepard, Chris Cooper and Benedict Cumberbatch all star in this tale of a family reunion and a family breakdown and (hopefully) one final reunion. The film, directed by John Wells, centers on a dysfunctional Oklahoma family whose drug-addicted matriarch, Streep, is dying of mouth cancer.

The trailer shows some trademark Streep moments in the film, but it also highlights the roles of Roberst and Lewis as antagonistic sisters and everyone seems to work well enough together to create a believable picture of a family on the brink of collapse. The film is based on Tracy Letts’ 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which received shining praise on its release in 2007. When "August: Osage County" played at the Ahamson Theater in 2009, Times theater critic Charles McNulty wrote: "The play’s pedigree could be expanded in ways both high and low, but 'August' brews its own distinctive mix of tragicomic gravitas and florid pop." The film adaptation is due for an early November release. Did someone say Oscar bait?

New HBO Drama With Mark Ruffalo And Julia Roberts, Hitting 2014

Julia Roberts Mark Ruffalo

These days, whenever Julia Roberts does something you know it's worth being excited about (Valentines Day is an exception). Her female characters defined the aspirations of the woman of the 90s and she was once the highest paid woman in Hollywood. Now, it has been confirmed that she'll be appearing in an adaptation of Larry Kramer's autobiographical play 'The Normal Heart', and will begin production this year, to air in 2014.

The Normal Heart is about Kramer's experience of New York in the early 80s, during the boom of HIV/AIDS. As the Hollywood Reporter says, Ryan Murphy will be directing, who is the co-creator of popular shows such as Glee, Nip/Tuck and The New Normal, all of which have strong homosexual themes, and which make him ideal for this production.

"We are so proud to be involved with this monumental project," says HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. "Ryan has assembled an extraordinary cast to bring Larry Kramer's landmark theatrical achievement to the screen for the first time, and we couldn't be more thrilled to bring this important film to HBO."

Queen Latifah Julia Roberts Sally Field

The Steel Magnolias remake, aired on Sunday (October 7, 2012) achieved impressive viewing figures, proving to be Lifetime’s most successful show since at least 2004, reports MTV News. It was the third-most watched original telecast ever for the channel.

A remake of the 1989 feature surrounding the lives of six resilient female friends of various ages - this time with an all African American cast led by Queen Latifah - delivered an average of 6.5 million total viewers in its premiere, according to Nielsen. "We couldn't be happier with the great response "Steel Magnolias" and "Abducted: The Carlina White Story" received from viewers this weekend," said Rob Sharenow, Lifetime's executive vice president of programming in a statement. More specifically, The Sony Pictures Television-produced film averaged 3.2 million adults 25-54, which, being a key demographic is great news for Lifetime. On Saturday (October 6, 2012) the premiere of the Lifetime original "Abducted: The Carlina White Story" also generated strong viewership, earning 4.1 million total viewers, but Steel Magnolias was the clear winner; the film scored the studio’s best audience since Life Is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story in 2006 and was the top cable movie among total viewers since 2007.

The diversity of the cast demonstrated the universal nature of the themes, with the story being virtually identical to the original feature film, which, having been filmed in the late 80’s, features a predominantly white cast. Julia Roberts and Sally Field, for instance, starred in the 80’s version.

‘Steel Magnolias’ Producer Sues Lifetime Over Queen Latifah Remake

Victoria L. White, the producer who worked on the tearjerker movie ‘Steel Magnolias’, is suing Lifetime over a television remake, claiming she isn’t getting the cash – or credit - that she deserves, reports TMZ.com.

White, an executive producer of the 1989 film starring Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton and Shirley Maclaine, filed a suit against Sony Pictures and Lifetime Television over a new television film starring Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad. The legal documents show that White claims to have a “television agreement” that entitles her to a co-producer of co-executive producer credit on any television project based on the film, as well as a $15,000 fee and 3.75% of profits. She alleges that Sony is fully aware of her television deal, mainly because the studio has already adhered to the terms once before. White was listed as a co-producer for the 1992 CBS television movie based ‘Steel Magnolias’. Why Sony and Lifetime have chosen to ignore the contract this time around is unclear.

Though the producer is suing for competition, she also wants an injunction to stop the movie from airing altogether, which seems a little dramatic. The film is set to air on October 7 – i.e. in four days – so we’re going to go out on a limb and say it’s still going to air, anyway.
