Julie Bowen has praised her ''awesome'' 'Modern Family' co-star Sarah Hyland following the young star's split from her abusive ex-boyfriend.

The 44-year-old actress has shown her support to her on-screen daughter as she revealed that Sarah, 23, is ''doing great'' since her dramatic break-up with Matt Prokop.

Talking at the Baby2Baby event in California on Saturday (08.11.14), Julie - who plays Claire Dunphy on the ABC show - shared: ''Oh my God, Sarah is so great. She's an angel. Just love her. I love her.

''Sarah is not even 25, and she's already way ahead of where I ever was. She's awesome.''

Sarah split from her 24-year-old ex-boyfriend in September 2014 amid accusations that he had been abusive towards her. The star (who plays Haley Dunphy on 'Modern Family') had been dating Matt for five years before ending their relationship after she took out a permanent restraining order against her former love.

The actress also revealed in court documents that Matt had been physically and verbally abusive towards her.

Julie - who originally intervened when she suspected that Sarah was not coping in the relationship - admitted to Us Weekly magazine that she felt she had to help her co-star out.

She said: ''I'm just nosy. I stick my nose in anything and everything. I love my kids, my fake kids and my real kids.

''If anyone needs help, I'm a soft touch.''
