There’s a lot of words we’d use to describe Justin Bieber, but “racist” wasn’t one of them. That was, until a video emerged of the pop star over the weekend, in which he tells a joke which includes the N-word in the punchline. In the video, Bieber asks, “Why are black people afraid of chainsaws?” Before simulating the sound of a chainsaw, but using the N-word, “Run n*****, n*****, n*****, n*****, n*****.”

Celebrity RacismBieber has apologised for using the racist word in the punchline of a joke

The video was taken from footage that was filmed for Bieber’s 2011 documentary, “Never Say Never.” Unsurprisingly, it didn’t make the final cut, although that didn’t stop The Sun newspaper from finding and releasing it. Bieber is said to be “frustrated and sad,” and has released a statement regarding the leaked video: “I’m very sorry. I take all my friendships with people of all cultures very seriously and I apologise for offending or hurting anyone with my childish and inexcusable behaviour. I thought it was OK to repeat hurtful words and jokes, but I didn’t realise at the time that it wasn’t funny and that in fact my actions were continuing the ignorance.”

The “Boyfriend” singer added, “ignorance has no place in our society and I hope the sharing of my faults can prevent others from making the same mistake in the future.”

Bieber isn’t the only celebrity who has been accused of using racial slurs. Probably the most famous case of racism from a celebrity was when Mel Gibson allegedly proclaimed, midway through his 2006 DUI arrest, that “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” A pretty broad statement there, which p*ssed off a whole lotta people.  He never quite managed to recover his tarnished rep after the incident and things only got worse when, in 2010, voicemails he had left his his ex-wife Oksana Grigorieva surfaced. In one of the voicemails, Gibson says he wished Grogorieva would be raped by a pack of “n******,” while in another he labelled Mexican people “wetbacks.”

In 2008, allegedly Charlie Sheen left a voicemail for his ex, Denise Richards, calling her “a coward and a liar and a f*cking n*gger.” Out of all the things Charlie Sheen has done, this is probably one of the least memorable, but that may be due to the sheer outrageousness of his behaviour in general.

Celebrity RacismWas Rihanna's tweet directed at Chris Brown's girlfriend, Karrueche Tran (pictured above)?

In 2012, Rihanna posted a photo deemed racist on her Twitter account, which was thought to relate to her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown’s Vietnamese girlfriend Karrueche Tran. In the photo, Rihanna puts hoop earrings and a pair of sunglasses on a bag of rice cakes. Rice is a staple Vietnamese food, so Rihanna might have thought she was being cryptic and clever. Fans thought they'd figured it out, although her reputation wasn’t too damaged, which may give Bieber some hope that he may recover from his latest scandal.
