We're not going to go into the ending of Lost. It was clearly ridiculous and Damon Lindelof was burned badly by the backlash. Most would agree that the final two seasons of the show were so poorly put together that it was almost impossible to conclude with a coherent finale.

Now, Lindelof is back with his latest series The Leftovers, a downbeat drama about life in a U.S town after the rapture. The first episode was melancholy and slow moving and left critics a little bemused. However, as Mark A. Perigard of the Boston Herald pointed out, we may as well strap ourselves in for a long, complex ride because Lindelof just isn't going to try do any explaining.

"Almost every moment here is staged to scream, "Look at me! I'm arty!" Lindelof, burned mightily by the backlash over "Lost's" ridiculous finale, has all but told reporters that the mystery central to The Leftovers will never be explained. That leaves you with a show wallowing in smug self-importance, melancholy and drear week after week," said Perigard in his review.

The Leftovers stars Justin Theroux as Kevin Garvey, who has to deal with mysterious happenings in his town after two per cent of the world's population suddenly disappear.

Though Perigard criticized the show, plenty of the critics see the potential.

"None of this would work without compelling characters. Fortunately, The Leftovers has bunches of them," said Todd VanDerWerff of The A.V Club.

"If Lindelof and Perrotta can somehow strike a balance of the human, emotional fallout while also delving into an explanation of the oddities involved in "the sudden departure," then The Leftovers could be one of the more riveting new series," said Tim Goodman of the Hollywood Reporter.

"Once the show gets going, and it takes more than one episode to do so, The Leftovers bores into the characters and the fissures that crack their community so astutely that the cause is almost secondary," said Alessandra Stanley of the New York Times.

The Leftovers pilot episode airs on Sunday, June 29, 2014.
